Jake Cronenworth

Corny  deserves to be ROY even if it only over 60 games.  He has a great presence at the plate and shortstop range at 2b.  Also, should something sideline Tatis Jr. for a short period, he can play a decent SS.  Excellent pick-up by Preller and sort of makes you forget about the hurt of giving up Luis Urias for Grisham.

Jake looked much better yesterday at the plate than he has the previous 3-4 games.  During that time, it was unusual not to see him come through in clutch situations when he only need to get a fly ball for an RBI but instead struck out.  The league is probably catching up with him a little bit but he still has the tools to be a solid everyday contributor to this line-up for many years to come irrespective if he wins Rookie of the Year or not.  Love his effort; love his personality.

Maybe a new challenger for NL ROY:

Bohm, 3B, PHIL ... 109 AB ... 327/374/471 (.845)

Cronenworth, 2B, SD ... 130 AB ... 315/371/538 (.909)

Two weeks to go could make this a tough debate ... especially with East Coast voters. Both play for 2nd place teams which shouldn't mean much ... but might.

Still think May (LAD) is a long shot with only 41.2 innings BUT playing for the best NL team sometimes is an advantage.

==========

Less likely but also watch for competition for Tatis as MVP from Freddie Freeman (ATL) who are leading the NL EAST.

Freeman ... 339/456/625 (1.081)

Tatis ... 303/396/635 (1.035)

More East Coast voters .... Freeman a long time favorite ... Atlanta is winning the East. Tatis has the new sizzle on his side plus playing SS. Again 2 more weeks might make the difference.

I hate to say this but both Tatis and Crone need to get hot here soon to have a chance.

The other two mentioned are hot at the right time.

CONGRATS to JC for winning NL Rookie of the Year!!    Fantastic accomplishment!

Nice award by Baseball Digest but I think the big one is the Baseball Writers Association of America announced on November 9

  • November 9: Rookie of the Year
  • November 10: Manager of the Year
  • November 11: Cy Young
  • November 12: MVP

Bottom line is that AJ Preller found a jewel when he got Jake.......can play the entire infield and has a great approach at the plate. Hope he is a Padre for at least a few years......part of a really good infield....Machado, Tatis Jr, Cronenworth and Hosmer and forever will be a part of "Slam Diego" that included the aforementioned infield.....they all got one and even let Meyers in the club 🙂

This was a really fun team to watch and just hope I get to see them in person next season

Typical for the Padres.

Jake wins every Rookie award except the one that matters.

Doesn't take away from his season but man.....when are we gonna catch a break with the national media?

Likely lost it due to the drop in production in Sept. Aug OPS at 1.021 fell to Sept OPS of .543.

Normally go with the position player playing every day but I can see the vote for Williams even with only 22 appearances (27 innings) .... gave up a HR in July and no runs (virtually no hits) for the rest of the season with something like a 17K/9 inning ratio. That is dominant.

Will be interesting to see them in 2021 ... Williams was a good RP but not great in the minors (now 26) and Cronenworth was a good SS but not great in the minors (will be 27). Who will deliver in the long run?

Williams (#2 draft pick) was a highly rated pitcher before TJ and greatly improved his control and velocity afterward.  Lewis, likewise, was a high draft pick (#1) that had to also come back from adversity after damaging knee injuries to finally show most of the talent expected of him.  Bohm also was a high #1 pick and had a very good stretch run but he is nowhere near the complete player that Cronenworth is; he's a poor 3rd baseman and at best, only adequate at 1st.

The bottom line is that even through Cronenworth didn't win the NL ROY, he greatly exceeded expectations as a #7 pick and showed the patience at the plate and the calmness in the field to be a solid contributor on both sides of the ball for the Padres whether it is as a starter or a super utility player.  I'm looking forward to seeing him be an example of grit, poise and hustle and doing his job everyday the right way at a high level of effectiveness.  I'm all in for Crony!
