Yup.. pretty much our single highest chip.. if he moves way up the spec list from his current value.. he could net us Murphy 1 on 1... Murphy currently a 51 value to Merrills 30... Kirk comes in at 37 (fyi)..Grish at 13.. on that trade simulator.. our next highest spec is Lesko at 15... Tatis is our highest at 117..Soto 82..is #2 asset...
If Merrill cracks the top 10 spec in baseball list his value jumps to 60+.. not that the simulator and real dialog match up in real life..but it does give you a baseline ..Othani 52 is basically same value as Murphy 51.. mainly because simulator takes $$ salary/yrs of control etc. Into its equations
Or we could just make the trade now and trade Merrill, Lesko, Mazur and Morejon for Murphy. Who needs minor leaguers anyway?
Please no.
Don’t care how good Murphy is….….I don’t want to trade our two best chips for a Catcher when our rotation is such a question the next couple years.
Trade them to the Marlins for a TOR Starter instead or keep them.
We’re gonna need league minimum players on the 25 man if we wanna keep the “big three”.

I have "always" been an advocate of AJ's current path...trading prospects for major league talent.
But...there is a limit.
I feel we've reached that limit and prefer we build the system back up over the next 2 years.
So IMO we need to hold on to Merrill almost no matter what.
Especially if the plan is to keep Manny/Soto/Tatis together beyond 2024.
Don't disagree..Merrill would replace Crone or Kim or BOTH as soon as 2024.. thats $12+mil savings.. Zavala CF and others could be ready too.. like Houston if you have 4 or 5 vets in a lineup the rest can be made up (carried) by rookies or lesser bats.. in our case would be more rookies/Young players finding themselves .. say we add Joc and Drury on 3 yr deals.. that would fit the narrative..

Also received votes: Kevin Alcantara, OF, Cubs; Samuel Basallo, C, Orioles; Eric Brown, SS, Brewers; Alexander Canario, OF, Cubs; Corbin Carroll, OF, D-backs; Pete Crow-Armstrong, OF, Cubs; Harry Ford, C, Mariners; Druw Jones, OF, D-backs; Edouard Julien, 2B, Twins; Orelvis Martinez, SS, Blue Jays; Curtis Mead, 3B/2B, Rays; Connor Norby, 2B, Orioles; Logan O’Hoppe, C, Angels; Joey Ortiz, SS, Orioles; Endy Rodriguez, C/2B/OF, Pirates; Gavin Stone, RHP, Dodgers; Brice Turang , SS, Brewers; Austin Wells, C, Yankees; Carson Williams, SS, Rays; Nick Yorke, 2B, Red Sox; Samuel Zavala, OF, Padres
Watched both at LE Storm this last summer.. you can see why they are 2 of our 3 best position player prospects (Ethan Salas C joins them after he signs officially in a few days)..if all 3 develop as predicted our Def and Offense up the middle could be really special circa 2026/27 by then all 3 should be up..

While he doesn't have the speed of CJ Abrams, it appears that Jackson Merrill could be the more productive, impactful hitter than Abrams should both remain on the dirt over the course of their careers. At just 19 (Abrams turned 22 in October) until April 2023, Merrill seems to have a more powerful swing and better judgment at swinging at balls he can hit in and out of the zone. Because he'll likely take more walks than Abrams, Merrill will probably have a consistently higher OBP than Abrams. On the other hand Abrams has 80+ speed and could steal upwards of 45-50 bases a year as an ideal lead-off or #2 hitter with average power.
Abrams has more spectacular athleticism and can come up with some awesome plays (like Tatis) but Merrill has very good hands and has good rhythm in making all the plays with possibly a stronger arm. Let's see what Merrill does in 2023 and whether this comparison holds up. Plus Merrill is a real gym rat and plays with a chip on his shoulder - love his competitiveness and and the leadership ability he has shown so far. Abrams is more low-key but still is a very good teammate and well-liked in the clubhouse as a leader by example. Washington got a very good player in Abrams but the Padres kept the better of the two.
Got to see Merrill at Lake Elsinore but Zavala was injured before I had a chance to get there. Zavala is going to be a special player among the Padres prospects. Needs a little more refinement to his game, but that can come quickly since he really didn't have much of a spring training/early season opportunities with his injuries. Not sure he's ready for Fort Wayne, but if assigned to Lake Elsinore, should show quickly he might be ready for the next level. I expect better pitch recognition and patience at the plate and better showing of his base running abilities. May not be a superstar in the making but a solid everyday major league player.
