Jackson Merrill Keeps Getting Better

From today's DFR ...

Top prospect Jackson Merrill turned 20, Wednesday, but definitely didn't celebrate the way he would have hoped. After feeling nauseous during the day, Merrill was removed after a lineout in the fourth inning. He is expected to return to the lineup quickly.

... I got worried last night when I saw he left the game early.

From today's DFR ...

... the big story of the day in the Summit City was the return of Jackson Merrill. The now 20-year-old missed the last four games with an illness. He had a single in five at-bats. He struck out twice; it was the first multi-strikeout game of the season for the top prospect.

In the past half-century, only two players have started Opening Day in center field before their 21st birthday.

You’ve probably heard of them: Ken Griffey Jr. and Andruw Jones.

Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio, the top outfield prospect in the sport, seems destined to join that list. But suddenly, there could be another entrant in that group -- a rather surprising one, too.

Jackson Merrill, the Padres’ No. 2 prospect and baseball's No. 12 overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, has made six starts in center field this spring

Long may it last!

Mr. Padre posted stats comparing the 3 Jacksons when the Padres faced the Brewers for the first time back in the middle of April.  Merrill was hitting an astounding .356 but certainly was not expected to keep up that pace, but what has happened since then?

Holliday, the consensus #1 major league prospect, played only another week in the majors, raised his BA to .059 and  OPS to .170, was sent down to the minors and recently placed on the minor league IL with a sore shoulder.  He probably will be back later in the year for the Orioles.

Chourio, the #2 major league prospect, has continued to be a regular in the Brewers OF, but has seen his BA drop to .224 and OPS to 631.  Likely he will pick it up as the season goes on as his walk and K rates are pretty good for a rookie.

Merrill, ranked much lower than the other Jacksons, has started to show the power the Padres knew he had once he grew into his body.  He is down to a .279 average and .792  OPS but has done this playing an exceptional CF and striking out only 16% of the time!  By comparison, Chourio has a decent 26% rate while Holliday was terrible at 50% in his 36 PA before being sent down to the minors!

For me, no matter how the other Jacksons do, I am totally satisfied with the production I have seen from Merrill and more than that his character on and off the field.  As much as I hated to lose James Wood in the Soto trade, losing Merrill would have been worse (in my opinion) if not the least of reasons it puts a LH bat in the line-up.  It will be interesting to see the comparisons of Wood with Merrill or even Abrams with Merrill as their careers move forward, since Abrams would have likely moved to CF to accommodate a better fielding Kim.

Merrills' biggest competition for NL ROY is Imanaga and Skenes.

For what it's worth Imanaga got completely rocked today by the Mets giving up 10 earned in just 3 innings of work.

I don't like rooting against other players but it would be nice for Jackson to be rewarded for this season with the Rookie of the Year Award....he's just gotta keep up what he's doing.

Would be the first Padre to win the award since Benito Santiago 27 years ago.
