Injury Updates

From today's DFR ...

Welcome back Hansel Rodriguez.  The former closer of the TinCaps has been injured for most of the last two years.  He got into 9 games for the Storm in May before reinjuring himself.  He clearly has shaken off the rust throwing two scoreless innings.  In limited work Rodriguez has 18 strikeouts in 12.2 innings with a 0.87 WHIP.

Jose Castillo got into his first game since being pulled off of his rehab stint in Triple-A on June 15. The big lefty gave up a single and RBI double to the first batters he faced, then struck out the side.

RHP Mason Thompson made his first live appearance since April 30, tossing an easy one-two-three inning.

RHP Jacob Nix and RHP Pedro Avila both made rehab appearances, as they make their way back from arm injuries. After he was shut down in spring training, it looked like Nix might be headed for Tommy John surgery, but he opted for PRP therapy instead and has been on a good progression since. Nix threw 1.2 innings and allowed an unearned run, striking out three. Avila also recorded five outs and allowed just one hit, striking out two. The pair should get a few more outings before working their way into viable options at the big league level.

From today's DFR ...

After Pedro Avila made his second rehab start Tuesday, Jacob Nix and Mason Thompson both made their second appearances Wednesday. For Nix, after walking two in his first rehab appearance it was a good sight to see him throw three innings without allowing a walk. Nix is on the 40-man. He will likely be back in San Diego before the end of the season.  Thompson has the raw stuff to dominate, but between injuries and inconsistency, he has never come close to reaching his ceiling. Getting back to Lake Elsinore for the end of the year would be a good sign.

Yesterday Brett Kennedy got his first rehab appearance in AZ.

That makes four 60 day IL pitchers working on their rehabs: Kennedy, Nix, Castillo, and Richards.

Every indication is that Castillo (who pitched in LE last night and struck out the side) and Richards will be in SD before the end of August and use the two vacant 40 man roster slots.

Not sure the procedure on Nix and Kennedy ... their 30 day rehabs should end before the end of the minor league seasons (and clearly before the end of the ML season) ... so that suggests the must be taken off the 60 day IL which in-turn will push to DFA two.

No word on any rehab efforts with Warren, Loup, or Cordero ... Diaz we know is out for the season (knee).

They've got the 2 open slots, then a likely move of Robert Stock to 60 IL.  My guess is the DFA if/when needed is Erlin.

Rehabbers really need to start by mid-August or hard to get back to MLB with Minors season ending (except playoffs for some).

Good point on the Stock move ... buys time until the inevitable at the end of the season.

I still would be biased toward DFA of Kennedy when he comes off ... way down the Padres pitching pecking order these days and, at least, Erlin may have some value in a trade at some point ... Kennedy should have none.

From today's DFR ...

RHP Garrett Richards expected to throw about 65 pitches in his second rehab start with the Storm. But after a two-out walk in the third, Storm trainer Ricky Huerta came out to the mound and they quickly made a decision for him to exit. The oft-injured big leaguer threw 51 pitches before giving way. While it is certainly concerning to see the rehabbing Richards leave early, the reports are that it was precautionary and not related to his surgically-repaired elbow. The hope is that he will make his next start this weekend. … RHP Mason Thompson made his return to Lake Elsinore and threw three innings. The righty allowed three earned runs and struck out three. On a positive note, Thompson did not issue a free pass. Prior to being placed on the injured list back on May 2, the big righty walked 19 in 18.1 innings. … Jose Castillo came back on one day rest to work a clean inning. The club previously said they would not necessarily wait for the big lefty to pitch on back-to-back days before activating him.

The Padres' left-hander (Jose Castillo) was activated from the injured list, only to exit his first outing with an injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand in the top of the seventh inning.

Castillo to 10 day IL ... Reyes called up.
