Quote from fenn68 on July 7, 2019, 7:05 amAny word on Warren ... went on DL June 8th with a right forearm strain ... one month and still radio silence. Looking like a candidate for the 60 day DL to make room for Jankowski coming off the 60 day DL.
Also, seeming Loup and Cordero will not be available until September ... if at all since they are both on the 60 day DL and with the minor league season ending the first week of September might not be time for an effective rehab to justify coming off the 60 day (and having to DFA someone else).
Sort of the same observation on Richards ... comments he could be ready for September but not sure where he stands with his throwing program and when (if) he starts a rehab. He had the TJ in July ... so only at the 1 year mark and that is normally at the early part of the return window which often extends to 18 months. I am confident that both the Padres and Richards would want ML work in September just to get over that mental hurdle going into the winter and set-up 2020.
All these 60 day DL players returns maybe be impacted by where the Padres stand in September ... if they are winning with their 25 man roster, a big gamble to drop a player for a player who has not been active for quite some time (and in each of these cases not all that impactful).

Madfriars reported a leg injury, but they didn't put him on IL

Warren just started playing catch. Agree he likely gets pushed to 60-IL when Jankowski is ready; will only be a few weeks from 60 days anyway by then.
I think it's possible after dust settles at trade deadline that Padres "strategically" DFA Warren: SOME team/s will still need RP; if his rehab goes well, and a team claims him, would save some $. Teams are still allowed to make trades from a DFA after July 31st, aren't they?

I may be wrong but all trades of major league contracts from July 31 until after the World Series are prohibited.
A team still could put a player on irrevocable waivers hoping the player would get claimed ... but that is it. If claimed the player (and remaining contract) just go away. If the player goes unclaimed and cannot be assigned to the minors, becomes a FA and any team can sign the player at league minimum with the original team on the hook for the contract.
So a team may save some money by waiving a player but not likely on the big ugly contracts. Probably not a route a team would take if they thought the player and any value.
Minor league contract can be traded apparently but not a big call for that at that point in the season.
I guess a team could ask for someone like Warren to be put on waivers telling the Padres they will claim him then at a future point deal some minor leaguer to the Padres if Warren made it to that team to claim. Bit underhanded and would expect the league to look hard at the second deal ... probably not worth the risk.
Looks like the no trade after July 31 is a pretty firm rule.

from Jeff Sanders (SDUT):I'm told Luis Urias' exit in the fifth inning withwas nothing major. He "felt something" on a swing and exited for precautionary reasons. He's day-to-day.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2019, 11:57 amOne hard-throwing young reliever the Padres will be without the rest of this season and into next is Miguel Diaz.
The right-hander underwent major knee surgery this month after tearing multiple ligaments in his knee running out a grounder while with Triple-A El Paso.

Sod Poodles Notes: At the close of last night’s game, Phillip Wellman, the Sod Poodles’ manager, said the outfielder Jorge Oña had shoulder surgery and will be out for the remainder of the year. Oña, who last played on May 3, was easily having his best season in the Padres organization, hitting .348/.417/.539 in 100 plate appearances.
