Per Melvin … Pomeranz experienced some soreness after this last appearance … will be shut down for a couple of days.

Guessing he will not be the SEPT 1 add.

I think if he is on the 60IL he can still be included in postseason even if he is not on the 9/1 roster.. but to be honest at this point our BP is killing it and Castillo I'd there plus at least 1 if not 2 of our current SP will be BP in post season so I say kid gloves with Pomz til next season.. unless he is 💯  then cool .. Johnson perhaps more of the lets go type since he is gone after thus season and if he is ready to go use him

Agree, given the way the pen is pitching now … and hoping Hader gets back to form … not sure a place for Pomeranz down the stretch / in the playoffs given the huge unknown about effectiveness after the long layoff.

Keep Pom on the side until next season.

Let Hader walk and use his money on OF help.

Given Pomeranz’ track record of injuries … and his inability to come back from this injury without continual delays … not sure the Padres should expect him to be a key factor in 2023. Maybe they get lucky … but would not be surprised if he does not have his past effectiveness and gets injured again in 2023.

He will be making something like $10MM next year (his final year) … would actually like to trade him before Hader … just can’t see that happening (and clearing the contract) until he is back pitching effectively … and not looking like that will happen in 2022.

Maybe IF Pomeranz looks good in ST they can move him at the end of ST … a lot of teams need a LH late inning RP. Let Castillo step in and take his place.

Yes ideally for a AA/AAA SP . . In the Groome level .. maybe even a non 40 guy to gain depth without restraints... an OF fitting that criteria would be nice too... The rest INF/C/BP seems to be in very good shape for now

Given that Yu + Hader + Pomz + Snell all expire in 2023... thats enough AAV to add Ohtani DH/SP.. which would cover 2 spots in the 26... and leave enough $$ to add a SP< expensive (maybe more inning eating) than Snell.. Groome/Wethers/Khner at least ONE being solid #4=#5 type/s would make such a move solid bridge move to the higher upside arms incoming 2025-26-27...

If it was a binary choice … I would pay the big money for Otani over Soto (no chance both if paying Machado, Tatis, and Musgrove).

Other than elite talent … from a business standpoint his international marketing brings in a lot of revenue to further enhance the team (or should). Actually, his domestic marketing … as I see it … is much more compelling than Soto’s. Soto may be great as a player but just does not seem to generate the national fan engagement to the level of Otani.

If a team is going to make a long term BIG investment in a player … the player needs to generate a lot more than just on field performance to maximize the return. Maybe at the moment not the best comp … but that was part of the logic of going early and big with Tatis who beyond being good as a player and had the “face of MLB” potential both in the states and in the international markets.

LATEST NEWS

Sept. 5: IF Brandon Drury placed on 7-day IL; C Jorge Alfaro activated
In a scary moment on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, Drury was hit in the helmet by an errant curveball from Dustin May. He sustained a cheek bruise and hasn't played since. On Monday, he landed on the concussion injured list.

That move is retroactive to Saturday, meaning Drury is eligible to return next Saturday for a rematch against the Dodgers. But Padres manager Bob Melvin offered no indication of when Drury might be available, noting only that he's been making incremental progress.

With Drury and Wil Myers out of the lineup, the Padres are without two important right-handed bats.

"It tests your depth," Melvin said. "For the most part, we've had a lineup we've been running out there fairly regularly, one through nine. And both those guys have been part of it. It just means we've got to do things a little bit differently. It gives somebody else an opportunity."

Alfaro had been sidelined since Aug. 24 because of right knee inflammation. He was 4-for-15 with two home runs in four rehab games with Triple-A El Paso.

Sept. 5: OF Wil Myers day to day with neck tightness
Myers exited the Padres' series finale on Sunday against the Dodgers after one at-bat, dealing with tightness in his neck. A day later, Myers was out of the starting lineup, though both he and manager Bob Melvin said the injury wasn't too serious and called it "day to day."

"It's definitely day to day, nothing more than that," Myers said Sunday night. "It was one of those things. After the first swing, I was like, 'I don't know how competitive I can be after that.'"
