Injury Updates

From today's DFR ...

Dinelson Lamet made his first appearance as a reliever in El Paso Wednesday night.  Lamet struggled with command, throwing just 19 of 32 pitches for strikes, but tossed two scoreless innings striking out two. … Jose Castillo cant do much more to prove that he is big-league ready.  He faced four batters and none of them were able to put the ball in play as he struck out the side around a walk.  He now has 12 strikeouts with only one run allowed in 10.2 innings. From a pure stuff standpoint, he is ready.

Michel Baez tossed another perfect inning with a strikeout.  The Padres have been very cautious with him since he returned from Tommy John surgery, but the Cuban-born righty has only allowed one run this month and hasn’t walked a batter in nearly three weeks.  While he will occasionally miss with control, like many pitchers coming back from injury, Baez has a big dominating presence on the mound and is another option for the San Diego pen.

Good news on the minor league injury front: Jackson Merrill has been sent out on a rehab assignment in the ACL. It's been eight weeks since he broke his left wrist.  The club's top draft pick last summer had a .970 OPS in 13 games with @Storm_Baseball before the injury.

The Padres website suggests that a number of RP “COULD” return by late July … before the trade deadline. Since none are throwing in anger yet … good chance that very late July before they are up to speed.

Pomeranz and Johnson are on the 60 day, so their return will require both a 26 man / 40 man move. Suarez just requires a 26 man move. Guessing Morejon will just be optioned to the minors but the others will get a 26 man slot (and coming off injury not real trade candidates.

So (baring some new injuries are trades off the ML roster),

1. Stammen … DFA opens a 26/40

2. Wilson … optioned

3. Hill … optioned and a minor leaguer DFA (e.g. Sullivan)

——————— sets up playoff push:

SP: Musgrove; Manaea(L); Darvish; Gore(L); Clevinger; Snell(L)

RP: Rogers(L); Pomeranz(L); Garcia; Suarez; Crismatt; Johnson; Martinez

Call-ups: Hill(L); Wilson; Lamet; Morejon(L); Knehr; Tyler; Weathers(L); Baez; Kerr(L)

* long shot Adams is ready (maybe very late in the season).

That sounds pretty strong / deep for the playoff push and in the playoffs when maybe they only go with 4 SP and looks capable to handle some new injuries.

Definitely a very strong rotation and bullpen. Hill, Stammen Adams could see as trade options for lower level minor leaguers to contending teams. We know how much AJ loves those types of deals

July 5: LHP Adrian Morejon to begin rehab assignment
On Tuesday morning, Morejon packed his things and was on his way to a rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso -- a welcome development for a beleaguered Padres bullpen. Morejon has dealt with countless injuries across his four big league seasons. He'd only just returned from Tommy John surgery when he landed on the injured list last month with inflammation in his left shoulder.

The team doesn't anticipate Morejon's rehab stint lasting too long. Among the Padres' many ailing relievers, Morejon is the only candidate to return before the All-Star break. He'd be a hugely valuable piece, as a left-hander capable of eating multiple innings. -- AJ Cassavell

Could see Morejon added and optioning Scott who was not all that impressive in his ML debut. I also have Scott as a DFA candidate as the 60 day IL guys come off or a non-roster player is added.

I was impressed with Scott ..he came in and stopped the bleeding right away and came back out to strike out the side... I know we needed innings at that point.. but I t was clear for me that his stuff stopped being as effective in rd 3.. if he doesn't come out that last inning.. he is at 0.00 ERA of absolute dominance.. as it is he is at 9.00...

But yeah he is low man on the vine

Scott took one for the team but he does have some talent and likely a better add than had we kept Tyler, although Tyler may have longer term potential.  Rogers less effective lately and without Wilson or Suarez has had to face more RH batters later in the game.  As the season moves on, expect this bullpen to rebound because of players returning to good health and some solid alternatives at AAA and AA.  If we can keep the starters healthy and they stabilize their game to game effectiveness, it is again pitching an defense that will carry this team into the playoffs in 2022.

For those of y'all who may be just as similarly a bit out of touch ...

IF Ha-Seong Kim (left thumb soreness)
Expected return:
 Day to day
Kim has been out of the starting lineup for two games but likely is available off the bench, manager Bob Melvin said. -- Shaun O'Neill (Last updated: July 7)

Padres update on Profar:

1. Concussion (so I think that means an automatic 7 day IL in this day and age)

2. Cervical (neck) strain … this is the wild card and could be minor (early return) or not minor (season ending) … more evaluation is necessary.

I would expect the Padres extend Profar’s IL through the All-Star break (just an extra 3 games lost) but safer for Profar’s health even if the cervical strain is mild giving him about 14 days off.
