The flu bug darting through the Padres’ clubhouse claimed another victim: Fernando Tatis Jr.

The 21-year-old shortstop had been starting every other day since the start of Cactus League play but was told to stay home Sunday.

The setback follows a slow start to Cactus League play, where Tatis is 1-for-10 with five strikeouts and no walks through his first three games.

Tatis had not played since a stress reaction in his lower back ended his rookie campaign in mid-August.

“I think the main thing is we’re seeing healthy hacks,” Tingler said over the weekend. “From the back standpoint, everything is checking off well. I think it’s a matter of getting him more at-bats, more rhythm and timing. We have to make sure he stays healthy. Love what we’re seeing defensively. He’s moving around well, he’s making plays. He’s going to be a big part of what we do.”

How come with every monster game I can’t help but think it’s more and more less likely we keep this kid?

If someone could just reassure me that there’s no way FTJ ever wears another uniform.....that would be great!

Yeah...  I argued that him being on 2019 O.D. roster "didn't matter" re his service time, because the 'new normal' is for position players to sign early extensions.   But his agent is Manny's agent... and he did not extend.  Yes crappy Orioles a huge part of that I'm sure, but Tatis' cost for Pads to extend him has risen conservatively by many 10's of Millions... he looks like one of the very best players in all of MLB.

At that point in time when Tatis (and Paddack) are eligible for FA (2025) there should be enough money to pay them without straining the payroll (whether it is with an "early" extension or a last minute extension).

In 2025, Machado is still getting $30MM per year but Hosmer is only at $13MM ... that is all that is committed. Of some of the yet to arrive stars will be getting their money later (Patino, Gore, Campusano, Abrams, et. al) and hopefully there will be some pressure with large arbitration decision even before their FA. Of, course never know the rules with the new CBA.

Lamet will be a FA in 2024 but at age 32 he may be traded / let go to FA if they have Paddack, Gore, Patino, and a couple of the prospects stepping up in the next 2-3 years .... so avoid some payroll there.

Of course Paddack and Tatis will have a say whether they want to sign ... surprisingly money may be a factor. Just looking at the contracts for Betts, Harper, Rendon, Arenado, Machado ... easy to see Tatis on the current trajectory commanding more in 2025 as still a very young super star. $35MM/year ... 10 years starting in 2025? Maybe more? Maybe a bit back loaded to clear Machado's final years? Maybe a couple of "extra years" just to stretch out the money for a lower AAV?

Paddack will be 29 ... young enough to demand a long term deal too.

Faces of the franchise type signings (assuming they continue to perform) and Padres almost have to go all in on signing both.

Pappa Tatis' top  salary was only 6.5 million and then he missed the next two seasons because of injury and never regained the kind of form he had earlier.  Jr. will easily surpass him and could get a contract similar to some of the young stars that are locked up by the White Sox, Braves and other teams.  I think as long as the offer is not insulting to him, he's likely to sign through his arbitration years (or more, depending upon what that offer is) because he will be a very young potential FA in 2025.  If the Padres are competitive, then he'll probably stay; if they continue to flounder, then he might bail because I'm sure he wants to play on the big stage, i.e. World Series.  I think the success of our team over the next 4-5 years will dictate how likely we are to keep those two and others who are now becoming the face of the franchise.   Me, I'm looking for one more big bat to acquire as soon as possible, probably an OF or DH if kept in NL after this year.  Bring back Franmil?  Got to identify one guy that has the potential  to break out in a big way, like Yelich did when he moved to Milwaukee, and make that deal.   I don't know who that is and a lot easier to say than do.

By that time....with two World Series trophy’s in the case at Petco,we will have extra $ to throw at these two.

Tatis, Lamet and Machado all have the same agent.  If Lamet continue to pitch as well as he's done the last two games, he's due for a huge raise in arbitration if not the Padres signing him to a long extension that may carry through his arbitration years.  With that done, Padres go after Tatis (and Paddack).

Not sure about signing Lamet (at this point) to a long extension. He is a pitcher (higher risk of injury) .... his first FA year is at age 32 .... Padres will find out in the next couple of years if they have other quality options from Paddack, Patino, Gore, et al .... and if a high cost extension is in place with Machado making $30MM, Paddack and Tatis up in 2025, and Gore, Patino, Campusano, et al coming quickly behind who among those do they not sign away from FA (all the others are younger and heading into their prime years while Lamet may be on the downside).

Remember they took that approach with a guy named Myers buying out arbitration years and added $20MM extension years ... and he was a younger player at the time.

Not against the concept but not taking it on easily and probably not with a pitcher who will be that old when the extension kicks in.

Tatis (yes), Lamet (no), Paddack (maybe in a couple of years).

I probably should have said buy out Lamet's arbitration years from 21-23, since he'll be a FA in 2024.  Lamet doesn't have that much mileage on his arm given his age, so I think he's good for at least the next 3 years.  Agree that very few pitchers are locked up early, but Paddack is already 24.  I can see that extension kicking in after 2021, providing at least double digit wins in that year and no issues with his arm.

Of those young stars who are elite, only Acuna has a long-term contract (8 years at 100 mil, with an option for 2 more years) and the trio in Chicago.  Soto does not have a long term contract and none of the budding Toronto Blue Jay stars are locked up.  The ceiling for Tatis may depend on what happens next year with Story, Correa, Seager, Baez, Lindor all in the mix for huge salary upgrades.

Gambles all the way around.  If the team has a high confidence level in a player ... buying out the arbitration years can make sense ... guaranteed money for what may be presumed is something lower that the player might get in arbitration. (For reference this is NOT the Gyorko model where the buyout was at probably the max arbitration money IF he produced ... which he did not). Money may be higher but the team gets an option year or two. Do think the Padres would like to do some strategic arbitration buyouts to solidify the go forward payroll obligations while locking down the roster.

Just not as “easy” on a longer term extension where at some point the player (usually) does not to give up his upside money. So then more of a best guess market price.

=======

Did hear a rumor (no validation) that Tatis and the Padres are in extension discussions on a long term deal (no idea what long term means in this case). One comment was that a deal was likely and maybe sooner than later.

Remember rumors are just rumors ... so ????????????????
