Chris Paddack
Quote from JasonE135 on September 8, 2020, 6:59 pmQuote from fenn68 on September 8, 2020, 1:14 pmMaybe more than Paddack’s “stuff” is in play for his struggles.
On his zoom press conference recently ... he referred to people being against him (assume he meant fans) and, maybe most telling (as I interpreted), was his firm commitment to how he pitches now .... implying he does not need to change since his stuff will work.
Tack that on to an earlier interview when he “implied” that he did not need all those scouting reports ... his stuff and how he pitches will be fine.
Now today, on the DSmith show they had a discussion about the commentary from his brother (on twitter I guess) is continually criticizing the team (not scoring enough in Paddack’s starts) and Tingler for taking him out of games too soon. A suggestion that is influencing Paddack .... although both brothers may have the same mindset from the get to.
Could we have in Paddack in pitcher that is so self confident in his pitching skills that no input for improvement will be accepted and the player (family) blames others for poor performance?
This year (and the 2nd half of last year) suggests he may not be the hype player we expected,
Do you happen to have a link for that press conference Fenn? I would like to hear what he says.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 8, 2020, 7:50 pmWith Richards most likely leaving after this season it would be nice to see one of Patiño or Gore start the Season as the #5.
As you pointed out...it’s great that we don’t have to put pressure on either to come in and lead the rotation until they’re ready to be “that guy”.

No .... but heard it a couple of times on two different SD sports talk shows (followed by the hosts commentary). No idea if the Padres put those zoom press conferences on their website.

Still think he has the stuff to be an quality ML SP with a bit more development .... plus clearly has the self confident bulldog most like in a ML SP. However, a hard line to evaluate where those desirable qualities cross over to stubborn and not willing to take input for improvement. At 24 a bit too early to tell but for now his words imply the latter. Might be mis-interpretation or Paddack not articulating his mind correctly or if accurate ... maybe he needs more struggles to convince him to alter his approach.
Just another point to consider in gauging Paddack ceiling.

Quote from hoffy51 on September 10, 2020, 3:06 amWith all this talk about how "every game counts," he had better start producing. He can say he's the new sheriff in town, and strut around like a peacock, but in the end, he has to produce and win some games. Personally patience is wearing thin with him. If he can't give us a quality start tonight, I'd rather see Morejon take his place in the rotation.

Quote from Randy Manese on September 10, 2020, 10:41 amWith only 15 game left to play and 11 games above .500, the "every game counts" mantra is not as critical as it once was. Team would have to completely collapse both offensively and pitching-wise not to win just the majority of the remaining games; that would leave us at 36-24, probably still locked into a playoff berth. However, you want to go into the playoff strong, so I'm sure all the Padres are taking each game as if it is a playoff game.
With regard to Paddack, for him every game does count because he is nowhere near the pitcher he was last year. That elite command is gone and he's been hit hard despite seeming to have the same velocity or greater velocity than last year. Many velocity is way overrated and the ability to spot high/low, inside/outside with both the fastball and change-up is way more important. Maybe his attempts to develop a 3rd or even a 4th pitch have adversely affected that former elite command. Maybe he is stubborn and doesn't believe the league can make adjustments to him, but even last year he stated he realized some teams were spitting on his change, yet he prevailed. This game against the Giants could get ugly real fast or it could be a turning point. Maybe even if he gets hit hard early, they'll want to keep him in to throw 75 pitches irrespective of the results so he gets that he finally needs to change. No one wants to fail but he needs to get that edge back that made him fun to watch pitch. Make it fun again, Paddack!

Quote from fenn68 on September 10, 2020, 11:19 amPaddack (as have some others) suggested he may be tipping his pitches ... another factor? Maybe, but his command with the FB seems way off ... especially down low.
When struggling .... the Pandora’s box of reasons explode, especially from amateurs like me.
Hopefully Rothchild can distill the issues down to the real one ... and get Paddack to fix it (some concern about Paddack being all that receptive).

Quote from Randy Manese on September 11, 2020, 12:31 amAfter reviewing the tape of the 1st two innings, you can see Paddack grimace as he walks off the mound after striking out Solano with a 95 ph fastball. In the 2nd inning, he mostly threw off-speed pitches, with his fastball topping out at 93. It was probably easier on his right ankle to not have to land as hard with the soft stuff. Although we didn't know it at the time, I noticed he also had a look of resignation on his face after striking out Crawford, which probably indicated he knew his day was done. Best he has looked in a long time - hope it is a mild sprain and doesn't have to go on the IL.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 11, 2020, 8:23 amI feel like they have to IL Paddack today b/c of the timing of when he came out of the game....
If it had been the 4th/5th inning, you just leave him in his rotation spot & see where he's at the day of next start.
But only going 2 IP, now Morejon is used up plus many guys worked yesterday.... not enough length in pen.
IL Paddack, slot Morejon into that SP slot (really only for 1 game, albeit vs LAD, then they can move to a 4-man rotation rest of way), recall probably Patino maybe Baez today for length in pen.

Quote from hoffy51 on September 11, 2020, 8:23 amI think this clears some stuff up. Even if he is able to come back in a week, that's probably only one or two starts at the most. If it's longer than a week, we are talking one start. I would just as soon plug Morejon into his spot. He has been pitching great lately. When the playoffs start, the Padres will go to a four man rotation anyway, which will not include Paddock. I say, when he is able to come back, put Paddock in the pen and see how he does there for the rest of this season.

Quote from fenn68 on January 10, 2021, 7:44 amPaddack will be an important part of the 2021 Padres rotation ... set up as the #4 SP behind Darvish, Snell, and Lamet.
Clearly had some issues in 2020 and some unimpressive stats overall. Yes, does need to improve his repertoire to be more than a #4-5.
However, looked at his 2020 game log and ... he still may work as the #4 even at that level of production (maybe not what we want but serviceable). He started 12 games ... got bombed in 4 of those starts BUT in the other 8 he was effective As a #4, giving your team a chance to win 8 out of 12 games ... on a team with a good offense ... is better than most teams' #4.
Paddack is controlled for four more years .... the top three are controlled for 3 more years. With Gore, Weathers, Morejon, at a minimum pushing for SP roles sooner than later .... unless Paddack steps up to an upper rotation pitcher ... could we see him as a trade chip next winter even if he peaks out at mid-rotation starter? Three years control in 1st arb would be appealing to many teams. If they let Pham walk (and Myers in his last season) plus likely the DH is in play ... Paddack might just be what they need to deal to get a young, low cost, corner OF.
