Champion your prospect.

Very happy with my championed prospect, Albert Fabian.  While he wasn't  projected to shine like Zabala or Snelling, he was consistently productive driving in runs at a 25%+ rate and at the top or near the top of the Cal League in RBI.  He may never have a high BA, but over the course of his time in Lake Elsinore he doubled his BB rate form 3% to 6% (this is what's keeping his average down) and decreased his K rate from 26% to 20%.  He leaves with an OPS of 830 and a wRC+ of 116.

Not bad for someone who will play the entire 2023 season at 21 years of age.  Should do fine at Ft. Wayne with the weather turning hot and muggy as the summer rolls in.  Not on any MadFriars' staff Top 30 but should make it next year.  Key is his patience at the plate and keeping that K rate in the low 20's, while still driving in runs with solid exit velocity.

My guy Nerwilian Cedeno rehabbed for a few games in Arizona and is finally back in the lineup for the Tincaps after a significant IL stint.

I'll take Double-A LHP Jackson Wolf (even though he doesn't quite spell his last name correctly.  Ha, ha!)  Let's go Jackson, Missions & Pads!

My prospect made it to the show this year and is making his first start for the Pads.  Let's hope he shows much more consistency than David Weathers has.  The Pads need someone to hold down the 5th rotation spot until Wacha returns.  Beat the Detroit Tiggers tonight!  Go Jackson & Pads!

You win!  Saw Wolf when I visited San Antonio in late May and he dominated.  Since then, has continually improved his WHIP and maintained a high level of consistency with his pitches.  Occasionally gives up a bomb, but the majority of the time his deceptive delivery is highly effective and hides the ball well from RH batters.  Not a high velocity guy but has been very accurate at spotting the FB combined with his breaking stuff.  Wishing him the best today and in the future!

Wolf wasn't terrible, only the bad 2nd inning.  Doesn't look like he will strike out many guys, but will let his defense work for him.  He had to suffer through nearly a 90-minute rain delay and still came back to finish 5 solid innings and got the W.  He could be the first/possibly only starter to come up from the minors league this year and do a decent job as a replacement starting pitcher, other than the first couple of starts Weathers had.

Is it time to give up on Weathers?  He appears to still have some front office fans, probably including AJP.  I was disappointed that Luis Castillo didn't get another shot after his terrible first outing before being DFA.  Castillo's numbers at El Paso were really good considering how much of a hitter's league the PCL is now.  Let's hope Jackson can keep us in games he starts until Wacha returns.  Go Pads!

Not sure what “give up” means in Weathers’ case. Maybe he is no longer projected as a long term core SP but he does have a minor league option in 2024 and until the Padres have a roster filled with better options (and they do not now) Weathers has enough stuff to continue to see if he develops to at least a useful ML arm. He is only 23.

With the FA pitchers to be and a pretty long list of pitchers on the 40 man with no options remaining for 2024 … going to be a lot of room to carry Weathers in 2024 … not a lot of non-roster prospects with better projection that HAVE to be added this winter. Add that going into 2024 the Padres will be way short of ML ready SP … Weathers actually is still may be the “better” option for the #5 SP.

Of course, Wolf was one start and demoted back to the minors, since the team won't need a 5th starter until August 1st.  We'll see if Wacha is ready or not by then, probably doubtful though, so maybe Wolf gets recalled for another start on 8/1.

Fenn, by saying "giving up on Weathers," was probably a poor choice of words.  I should have said, give Weathers a much shorter leash, since he continues to be very inconsistent at the major league and Triple A levels.  As of right now, it is debatable that Snell will be resigned and the only possible high level minor league in-house candidates appear to be Weathers and Wolf.  Unless, something changes with Weathers, which is possible, I've personally seen enough of him at the big league level and would rather roll with Wolf first.  If Wolf proves unable to handle the job, then the Pads can flip back to Weathers as an in-house candidate.  However, I would expect AJP to address the organization's lack of starting pitching depth this upcoming off-season, possibly spreading out Snell's potential money over a couple of candidates.

SP may be Preller’s biggest challenge. Wolf, Weathers, Avila, Morejon, Honeywell, Waldron, and Irate maybe all be in the mix for those last 2 (or maybe 3 if Wacha does not return). At least one needs to step up to secure one slot since adding multiple SP of any quality is a bit of luck but Preller did that with Wacha and Lugo for a total less than $15MM.

Somehow need to bridge 2024 before we start seeing some of the better internal SP options nearing ML readiness … in 2025-26.

That's my boy.

Snelling was already a top prospect so not surprised he did well but he even exceeded my (and probably everyone's) expectations this season.

How did your guy do?
