Atlanta Braves at San Diego Padres: March 27-30
Quote from Stergios on March 30, 2025, 12:16 pmQuote from fenn68 on March 30, 2025, 2:55 amI don't know how Arraez will grade out defensively at 1B over the course of the season but in these first three games he has been very good ... well above his reputation as a poor defender. Handled tough throws in the dirt and made that excellent throw to 2B yesterday. He does seem comfortable at 1B.
Also, a lot of kudos to Cronenworth on his play (letting the soft liner drop) with runners on 1st/2nd and starting a double play 4-6-5. Not only the first action to not catch but more the mental alertness to go to 3B to start the double play. No chance he would get the double play on that soft shot if he did what most would do and go to 2B ... the hitter would have easily beat out the return throw to 1B. That is a lot to process in that second that the ball was hit.
And that incredible effort by Tati to potentially prevent the ball from leaving the yard, not to mention the flip to Jackson to get the ball back into the infield.
And Hayward’s sliding catch.
They seem to be playing hard for the fans and for one another. I think Shildt deserves some credit here.

The Padres open the season with the 4-game sweep of the Braves, who are very tough to beat. When was the last time they swept them?
Nick Pivetta gave a dominant and outstanding performance going 7 innings, 1 hit and no walks. He was easily the best starting pitcher of the series. He could have easily gone 8 innings as he had only 82 pitches. The BP was solid throughout the series allowing only 1 ER.
RBIs by Tatis(2-3) Machado(1-4), Merrill(1-4), Bogaerts(1-3) and Lockridge(1-1).
Bring on the Guardians!
GO PADRES!
4-0

Yeah, Tatis is cemented into the top spot. The offense is just so much more dynamic with the threat of him stepping in the box on the first pitch of the game.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2025, 6:12 amWell, a good "team" effort to win 4 straight from Atlanta.
Surprisingly, with two of the best SP in MLB not performing at their best (King 2.2 innings 10.13 ERA / Cease 4.1 innings / 6.23 ERA) and the three time batting champ Arraez going 0 for 13 ... the Padres can win with the rest of the team offensively, defensively, and RP covering.
Long season and expect King, Cease, and Arraez to rebound ... and the "hot" players to cool off but for now ... all is good.

Quote from fenn68 on March 31, 2025, 6:13 amEarly return on Sheets is good (to my surprise) ... his swing looks strong and is making quality contact. He should get a long look at the DH role ... maybe even vs LHP at some point if the RHH Gurriel struggles. Think he still has three years control, so hoping he continues to deliver.
However, the other roster adds have yet to get on track:
Hayward 0 for 12 ... have little memory of his play in previous seasons but he seems "stiff" in his play in the field ... is making the plays in the OF so don't know if that is how he has always looked or a sign of age.
Gurriel 1 for 5 ...
Iglesias 0 for 2 ...
Too little to draw any conclusions but need to keep an eye on the AAA call-up options mid-season ... especially LF if Heyward does not click in offensively.
