LAD still has the ability to trade Verdugo for Realmuto and then sign Harper, and finish filling out the OF with Bellinger, Taylor, and others. Unfortunately, the LAD will be fine next year.

LAD will be more than fine ... they should run away with the NL West. Agree with the logic except for the sequence ... they need to sign Harper first then consider the Realmuto deal (for which Miami is asking more than Verdugo).

As it stands, LAD has an OF of Peterson (trouble hitting LHP) - Taylor (great 2017 and so-so 2018) - Verdugo (unproven MLer). Bench of Toles (?) and Hernandez (good). Might need to keep that group AND sign Harper considering the way the LAD like to move pieces around. Bellinger is looking like the 1B without a clear #2.

Maybe they sign Harper and deal for a different catcher who is good but a lot less costly or sign a "serviceable" FA like Hundley. They do have a couple of top shelf catching prospect on their fast track so may not want to go overboard in adding a catcher.

Whatever they do ... they will win.

I hope they do sign Harper.

Great young player and all but $30+ mil per year with his inconsistencies and his health history has a huge

potential to be an albatross of a contract.

IMO Machado is a much safer way to go.

Agree that Harper could be less than hoped for ... especially over a 10 year contract. LAD seems to want to get Boras off the 10 year deal (actually go higher on the AAV for shorter term) allowing Harper to hit FA again in his early 30s.

Machado may be safer based on health / consistency but might not hold that for 10 year at a more demanding SS / 3B role ... he does not seem like a player who will go quietly to 1B/DH ... he is not all that interested in returning to 3B is best position.

Sure sounds as though Machado wants to be a NYY (and they apparently want him) and Harper wants to be a LAD (and they want him) ... it is just about the money. The wild cards are still PHIL and CWS in my mind ... both with a ton of money to spend ... and are willing to spend ... and are in on both jacking up the contracts. Got to be some happy agents.

The Cubs are about to sign Kendall Graveman on a similar deal s we did with Garrett Richards.

Although I assume at a much lower cost.

I wonder if AJ was also interested?

Hes a pretty good pitcher when healthy.

. Not that Miami has that may fans                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Only drew 800,000 averaged 10 k per game. I didn't think that was possible in this day and age thats like 1940s St Louis Browns attendance

MrP., did you see the Twins just signed your guy Dean Anna? Didnt you love that guy?

Kevin Acee is reporting that IF the Padres add a SP he will NOT be Kluber or Stroman ... sort of the anti-Morosi view. Priority is 3B.

Morosi is now suggesting the Padres are still in on Realmuto ... with the intent of then dealing Hedges for SP. The problem is Miami who has not dealt Realmuto even though a lot of teams are interested ... that price tag is very, very high.

Just guessing that teams are not dealing their "stars" unless they get front line quality not volume of potential ... result little movement. As much as Padre fans love their prospects ... other than Tatis / Gore maybe the rest are not viewed as "elite". However, no hurry for anyone the way the new market works ... so time changes attitude.

Note: Nelson Cruz signs with the Twins ... RHH power (DH) on a 1 year deal. Appears Seattle is now positioned to push Encarnacion ... RHH power (DH) ... as the supply diminishes. Opportunity for SD to push their corner OF Myers / Renfroe each has some defensive versatility beyond being a RHH power bat.

"Loved"?

No.

But he was a guy I thought deserved a shot "with the Padres" based on his production in the minors.

Then I thought we didn't get enough for him when he was traded to the Yankees only for him to go out and

never hit at the major league level and make me look foolish.:)

He's a perfect example of why I hate having our AAA affiliate in the PCL.

I would "much" prefer the hitting conditions at AAA be closer to what they are in Petco.

I don’t really understand this take Fenn. Based on reports about the potential Acher deal it sounded like the Rays wanted Patino or Paddack and AJ wasn’t willing to include them. That sounds like the Padres view their guys as elite and that the price was too steep for them, not that it wasn’t good enough for the Rays.

Reports from multiple outlets state the Marlins asking price for JTR which you quote is “very, very high”. I haven’t met one person who follows farm systems or read any publications that have the Padres system as below top 3. I think with the depth in system,  we have guys who might check into the late teens of our rankings that would top 5 in other systems. I don’t think thats biased fandom, it seems to be agreed on by many throughout baseball.  If the Padres don’t pull off a big move I think it will be due to Preller believing in his guys future more than another team thinking they don’t have enough to make a deal.
