Around the League...non Padres

It pains me to post this here, in more ways than one ...

Luis Urias (2B) MIL - Jan. 25

https://www.rotowire.com/baseball/player.php?id=736841

Urias is being evaluated for a wrist injury sustained at the end of the winter season in Mexico, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

ROTOWIRE RECOMMENDS: Urias developed soreness at the end of the winter season, and he'll return to the United States in order to have the injury evaluated, although the exact nature and severity of the injury are unclear. The 22-year-old was traded from the Padres to the Brewers in November and figures to be the team's shortstop on Opening Day if he is healthy.

Jon Jay and Edwin Jackson both sign with the D Backs.

Nick Hundley retires and takes a gig with the league office.  Nice career and a really good dude.

Chris Young promoted within league office.

Padres well represented at MLB HQ.

CHICAGO CUBS

Patrick Mooney, @PJ_Mooney

It would not be shocking if Rowan Wick, a guy who got drafted as a catcher and spent years as an outfielder in the St. Louis system, wound up closing more games this season than Craig Kimbrel, the game’s active saves leader. That is how confident the Cubs are in their Pitch Lab, which helped Wick develop into one of their most trusted relievers last year. That illustrates the questions surrounding Kimbrel, who struggled to stay healthy and rediscover his All-Star form last year after a long free-agent holdout. There is no closer controversy yet. Kimbrel should have the ninth inning on Opening Day. But Wick will be a reliever worth monitoring.

Good (maybe Great) news for the Padres as an organization on the rise over the next years.

A report out suggests (for 2022) MLB is considering adding TWO more playoff teams per league ... 14 clubs make the playoffs. No idea on the structure since 7 per league seems a bit unwieldy ... but could give the three Division winners a bye ... and have the four wild cards have some sort of play in series to get a run against the three "winners".

Great for the Padres since by then we hopefully have Gore, Patino, Paddack, and Lamet hitting on all cylinders and very capable of winning wild card games in any kind of configuration and still be positioned to compete against the Division winners. Pitching depth ... a good thing.

Added twist to new playoff proposal:

The top overall team in each league would get a first-round bye, with the other teams playing 3-game series (all in one city) to advance.

The highest ranked of the "other 6 teams" will get to select who they play. So, not an automatic #2 plays #7, etc. plus getting I assume home field advantage. The "better" team can assess the most favorable match-up for that 3 game series at home.

More meaningful games in Sep with more teams in contention and finishing in the top 4 and positioning in 2 - 4 has a real advanage ... potentially reduced motivation for tanking ... more money for everyone.

If the process in 2019:

LAD (bye)

ATL ... first pick for a 3 game home series from among the last 3

STL ... second pick for 3 home game series

WASH ... gets the remaining team for a 3 game home series

MILW ... NYM ... AZ would have been the last three.

So battling for specific position 1 through 4 to the end has an advantage and does making the top 4 plus two more WC openings ... more Sep interest ... and Oct interest / money

Nolan's Arenado uncle comes to the donut shop all the time-- he came in today-- listen to this nugget... Las year when Nolan signed his contract -- he took $30 mil less overall because team assure him it would use $$ to upgrade this offseason-- they didnt and he feels disrespected and wants out-- Cubbies have been in contact since late November with Rocks-- Nolan is so pissed off he is not even in Camp, instead he is working out at ASU and has been for about 2 weeks... hmmmm

Tommy Pham should be entertaining off the field too. Check out his comments related to the Astros and Correa/Bellinger
