They got him to be a back up for Pages, as they have no true back up CFer. And, yes the pessimist in me sees him becoming an All Star in a LAD uniform. See Muncy!

Either might be better than Cronenworth.

They like to get players other teams might need, we know now he was available, maybe another contending team offered something for him, the bums knew and offered something better, there is a reason they have gotten Tucker, Kim, Snell, E Díaz, and actually way overpaid for some of them and others, sure, It helps to have them, but also It helps other teams don't have them, you can call me crazy, but still ...

Old face in new place.
Looked really strong vs. the Duds in the WS. Not so good this year.

Offensively, Freddie looks horrible. That's why I suggest if Duran is showing more at the dish, I'm quite happy sending Fermin down.
Any O coming from behind the plate( read: Campusano) will be a huge asset going forward, especially seeing as FTJ will never hit another home run, and Machado will continue hitting below .200(..... obviously being sarcastic but it's almost June....c'mon guys!)

I liked both Kolek and Bergert (now out for the season ... IL) and given the current "need" for SP on the Padres sure would like them back.
Both were "average" with the Padres but both developed to above average in KC while Fermin has faded from his history (at least for now).
I guess one of the curses of making trade deadline deals to "win now". Getting an historically "above average catcher" with 3+ years control and at league minimum for a stretch run replacing Diaz / Maldonado requires giving up talent. Probably did not expect to be without Musgrove, Darvish, and Pivetta here in 2026 ... so that compounds the frustration. Plus Duran was not on the radar as an option even though in EP.
Yet, Padres are currently in a playoff slot (tied in losses with LAD) with one of the best records in MLB and Tatis, Machado, Merrill are all hitting well below their histories ... maybe Fermin's defense / handling of the pitchers does create some value.

Quote from Randy Manese on May 24, 2026, 5:51 amFermin is also hitting well below his history while handling multiple changes in the pitching staff and tutoring both Campusano and Duran. As I recall, earlier in the season he was doing very well in challenging pitches but lately not so much and I believe this has a carryover affect on his confidence at the plate.
Recently released Diaz and "retired" Maldonado are both available if anyone wants to go there but Fermin had a terrific ST and has taken a real beating behind the plate. I think he needs his body to heal and it could be possible that he too has some lingering concussion effects from taking so many shots to the head off his mask. I'd think about putting him on the IL when Campy is able to return and give him the opportunity to regain his confidence and health.
