So BAL gets a decent innings eater and another P prospect for Rojas.
Good move for BAL, wonder if Preller just wasnt interested in Irvin?
NO A's got the P and INF for Irvin... but still yeah I'd rather have Irvin 180 IP than a 15th to 20th spec and a lower not top 30 P

They still have Blackburn (A's) who is better . But would require Garcia (to $$ match)..Garcia could easily close for the A's .. and based on this return... wonder if OF Salinas + Garcia for Blackburn gets it done

Reported as Irvin and a minor league pitcher to BALT with OAK getting minor league INF.
Shows we we don’t know about how the players are evaluated by ML teams.
On the surface Irvin … 29 but 4 years control at league minimum who looks to be able to deliver innings with a low 4 ERA would be more valuable as a#5 SP to a lot of clubs … but he was not. Soft thrower with nothing outstanding so I guess the analytics don’t do him any favors.
Then if you consider OAK had to throw in a minor league RP to get a A+ level prospect … maybe we are underestimating the prospect. He was quite good as a 20 year old INF in high A last season. The ranking may be a reflection of before last season and not his development in 2022. Clearly OAK wanted this kid since they had no motivation to move Irvin.

Different organizations have different evaluations. Oakland seems to be going after contact oriented speedsters. First it was Ruiz and now this kid. I'm a little surprised at the return, but there seem to be some questions about how Irvin will do outside of Oakland.

In fact Venezuela has 2 new stadiums as good if not the 2 best in South America now.. no wonder we've been seeing more and more Intl players from Venezuela in the last 1/2 decade.. they are turning into a beisbol 1st country like the DR.. and away from Futbol as #1 one of a few countries in South America without Futbol as the #1;sport in their country now..

FanGraphs just published the Pirates top 43 minor league prospects for 2023 and none of the 3 the Padres included in the Joe Musgrove trade are on that list. The 3 were OF Hudson Head, LHP Omar Cruz and RHP Drake Fellows - Head was on some lists last year but the two pitchers have not developed thus far although Fellows has had some injuries. Padres did give up Joey Lucchesi (who subsequently had TJ surgery) to the Mets and a very good closer to the Pirates, David Bednar, but for what Joe Musgrove does for the Padres both on and off the field makes this trade one of Preller's best ever!

Highlights the failure rate of "prospects".
I recall the angst in trade Xavier Edwards (Padres #4 prospect and a MLB Top 100) in the Pham/Cronenworth deal. Edwards still languishes in the MiL and has been traded from the Rays to the Marlins. Renfroe also went in the deal but was moved by the Rays after one bad season.
Padres have Cronenworth ... a good deal by Preller ... and maybe a sign that the may have a better evaluation of his prospects than we do.
