ATL signs Murphy to a contract extension, 6 years $73M, and a $15M option for 2029.

So basically brought his arb and did about 3/53 (- out his proj arb $$ next couple yrs).. pretty fair deal for both parties..

I have a great deal of respect for the Braves and how they do business seeing as I have a second home in Northern Georgia. The fact that they were able to lock up Murphy for long term in a deal that is more than fair to both sides and the way they have locked in their core players tells me they not only are in the moment but also have taken a long view as well

Check this out....locking up their players

Sean Murphy signs six-year extension with Braves (mlb.com)

If my Padres can't win the World Series then my next favorite team is the Braves and for the other team it has got to be my Georgia Bulldogs....Go Dawgs 🙂

They have no doubt locked up a very good core, and they should continue having a good run for awhile.

I would like the Braves better if they didnt have the audacity to call themselves "Americas" Team, and that dumb ass Tomahawk Chop.

So let me roll a question out there, especially with the Kluber signing in BOS. They are rumored to be listening on Sale. Would he be a good gamble for SD to take? He did not pitch much last season, I believe 5 innings due to non baseball/fluke injuries. He is coming off TJ surgery in March of 2020, so for the last couple of seasons, not a lot of wear and tear on that arm.

If he bounces back to his 2018 form, he is a top of the rotation arm. His 2019 was a mid rotation guy. He is controlled through 2024, and a vesting option for 2025 based on 2024 CY Young standings. He is making a big contract, $27.5M per season, and the option is for $20M.

Is BOS looking to shed some of the contract dollars, or are they thinking they are getting top of the rotation pitcher prospects back? Would you take him if BOS included all the money that we sent for Hosmer?? Which would basically make Sale a $14.5M per season pitcher?

I think it all depends if Boston is in a partial/full rebuild or just an orderly transition.   They have locked up Story and Yoshida and look to extend Devers along with Verdugo and Casas.  If they can get Dalbec to be productive, they have several top position position players (mostly middle infielders) in their minors who may be ready in a couple of years that would form a decent line-up.  While they won't look to give Sale away, if they can get a young potential starting pitcher as well as a catcher, this would help round out their team.

As for the money, Boston didn't get to keep the Hosmer money - it's a debt that follows Hosmer wherever he goes and whether he plays or not, i.e., the Padres' owe the money directly to Hosmer.  I think they'd be willing to pay some of Sale's contract for the right package.  For the Padres, this may mean Campusano and Lizarraga.  This would leave them with a lot of money to compete for the FA pitchers that will be available next year.  I wouldn't rule out a trade, but you're really rolling the dice on a pitcher who could be very very good or only start 10 games or so for you in 2023 with unpredictable results.

Read a story on a potential Blockbuster between Red Sox and Cubs ..with Devers to Cubs

If Cubbies expand to Devers and Sale and the later regains his form from a few yrs ago post injuries.. Cubs could be in the Centeal Division race.. as is they are much improved squad and could challenge Brewers for 2nd place

Also find RedSox intriguing

Casas 1B.. Yashiro in LF and Turner DH... will be big Improvements to their offense.. an extension to Devers (or solid return via trade) + bouncebacks from Dalbec and Verdugo.. and healthy SP could lead to the team being in it (WC) til the end.. like Orioles 2022..

Not sure I'd give Campy AND Lizarraga for negative value Sale...

But I'd do Campy and Pomz (to offset some $$)+ Efrain Contreras .... if Boston picks up $20 mil of Sales $$.. perhaps all for his 2023 $27 owed.. $27-$20 = $7 - (pomz $10) = Net -$3mil for 2023 .. add that to the $6 mil or so we are under the $273 treshold.. and we would have Sale and $9mil available if needed to add to the roster..

Sox still have the SP depth to reload towards at least being in the WC convo..save $27 for 2024..and a potential $20 for 25.. and can go after Othani/Nola/etc.. next offseason... Get a C and a potential familiar BP arm who could set up for Jansen..

Padres gamble on a bounce back from a could be ACE of our rotation..while cresting $$ an extra $3mil in space to help ease the "up against it" feeling/pressure it currently has ...

Sale has 2 years and 55m left on his contract. Even if they eat 20m the AAV is still 17.5m Pomeranz has an 8.5m AAV for the Padres. That deal would have us +9m and over the 273m threshold not under it.

The way I would structure it is they pay $20 of his $27 for 2023.. we pay the entire $27 for 24.. and then Pomz goes -$8.5 (thought Pomz was $10.. but ok still saves $1.5 so would be $7.5 under..) however of the deal can't be structured like this.. then Sox would have to cover the amount to keep us at least. at the current $6mil or so under...

I would not give any good prospect and take on any money to take a wild gamble on Sale.

His last really good season was 2018 (age 29) then in 2019 a 4.40 ERA … 2020 did not pitch … 2021 42 innings … 2022 6 innings … so a lottery type gamble that at age 33 he can even pitch 100 innings effectively. Plus then they are stuck with him (at big money) for 2024. Basically he is an expensive Drew Pomeranz.

I am guessing BOST sees the same and would love to move him (and his contract) to open payroll space to extend Devers and a few others. IF some team wanted BOST to eat most of the contract  (does not help the Devers’ issue) they would have to really toss in some key prospects (not likely by any team). No upside for Boston to move Sale and pay most of his contract.

Padres are currently one of the best teams in MLB … 3rd highest payroll … $6MM under the next penalty level … makes no sense to add a high risk / high pay pitcher and give up needed future prospects. Just sign Cueto at a fraction of the price and keep the prospects. Note: don’t think they will even do that.
