Good to see Franchy still swingin'!

Watching our offensive struggles makes it tough to watch guys like Cordero, France, Miller, Naylor, Renfroe, Urias, etc....help their current teams.

Time for Grisham, Nola, Clevinger( BIG TIME!) to even these trades up a bit.

Bring on the Brewers!( with Lauer, Renfroe, and Urias!)

With roughly $70 mil (look upbcalculation as much as $107 mil off the books... but ill say $70 cones off... (counting on Hos staying at 3/39 left saving us around $7mil per)...IF we go after Soto......

CJ Abrams (1) + Hassell (3)+ Kim (after Tatis Jr comes back..so figure 7/4/22 trade for the meme)+ Campy(4) and Max Ferguson (15) + Lamet (to offset 2023$$ ) for Soto

Soto arb $$ for 2023 $25 mil... as AJP works on a long term deal..(which corresponds with Myers (23) and Hosmer (2026) dropping off the books... that leaves us with $45 mil with Our own FA pool of

P Musgrove *$22per a must resign

P Clevinger

P Manea

P Rogers*$12per next close to must

Leaves us $11 mil

After all this (for 2023)

1B Hosmer

2B Cronesworth

SS Tatis Jr

3B Machado

C Nola/Alfaro

LF Profar

CF Grisham

RF Soto

DH Voit

SP

1. MUSGROVE

2.YU

3. GORE

4. SNELL

5. MARTINEZ

CL- ROGERS

BP CASTILLO

BP BAEZ

BP SUAREZ

BP MOREJON (6TH SP)

BP Cristmat

BP Adams

BP Stamen

BP Garcia

The rest gone....

Bench and CF/LF competition

Utility Batten (AAA 22)

CF/COF Ruiz (AA 22)

So $11 mil to upgrade LF/CF/SP/BP ...with the likelihood of Snell or Yu being traded to refocus$$$... my next signing would be Manea

Would also target in FA

OF

Gallo

Benintendi

Maybe Wil back cheap

Other P in case we can't get Manea or Clev back

Verlander - 1yr deal $20 + type

Others...

So YES we can afford Soto...YES our system would be bare...YES AJP would have the draft.. International signing and trades to replenish the system

Prospects left of interest

Batten ..Ruiz.. both ready to challenge for 23 roster

Mears..Wood..Merrill.. 2024

Others will take steps fwd and sone will fade away...

Depending on how this season turns out, I'm sending Darvish and Snell( and their $34 million) out for OF pieces, signing Clevinger( dude owes us BIG TIME!) and Manaea, and definitely NOT spending big money on a closer( with our history of finding closers, just no way we throw a lot of payroll at that position).

With Myers leaving, Grisham looking worse every year, and Profar not ideal for everyday use, I'm bringing in as much OF help as I can this offseason( and that includes Abrams, who should be getting ALL his reps in the outfield at AAA). That said, no thank you to Gallo or Benitendi.

I personally would not be surprised; considering the quality of FA OFers for next offseason, to see Myers back in a SD, just at a lot lower salary commensurate with his performance over his tenure in SD.

I would also not be surprised to see Preller chase Gallo as well. As much as many might not like Gallo, he is still considered a high level player in todays game. While some of us older fans may not like his 3 outcome approach, his power is still that kind that can carry a team for a month, and his defense shows up and is of a high level.

And then, we will see if Preller still trys to chase and get Reynolds out of PIT via trade.

I don't know Booster, if those qualities were admired Hunter Renfroe could have been had the past 2 off-season for less money than Gallo will most likely get.

Hard pass on Gallo whose production seems to be waning (and some reports out of NY he has lost a lot in his swing). In 2022: 176/294/333 (92 wRC+). OBP/SLG was his selling point ... not there so far on a team with big bats surrounding him (Judge, Bryant, et. al), in a LHH ballpark, and one of the only LHH in the line-up.

It is a long season with 120 games to go, so jumping pro or con on any players yet is premature.

Consider ... per wRC+ (117) ... Profar is the 25th best OF for offense in MLB (out of a potential 90 OF slots). Toss in defense and baserunning, he is ranked #10. However, the much loved Reynolds is #39 in wRC+ (106). Gallo has a 92 wRC+. Actually a number of much heralded OF are current well behind Profar.

Basically, if the Padres are looking to improve the OF they have a major challenge in the FA market (overpriced) or the trade market (not for sale or overpriced) ... minors ?, Abrams not hitting and Ruiz would need to make a big jump from AA (although that just may happen) ... nothing realistically remaining for 2023.

Bottom line there are a lot of unproductive OF currently in the ML ... very hard to get a good one for another team and the FA market is marginal for the price given the supply.

I would say that when you look at those two players, two things separate them.

At the plate, Gallo is superior in OBP compared to Renfroe. Gallo has had seasons where his OBP is well over .350. Gallo is career OBP of .331, while Renfroe is .295, and rarely over .300. Thats fairly substantial. Maybe this will help. Gallo has 205 more plate appearances over Renfroe for their careers. In those 205 PA, Gallo has 26 more HRs, and 207 more walks! But to be fair to Renfroe, Gallo strikes out a lot more than Renfroe.

And then defensively, eventually Renfroe was relegated to playing LF, while Gallo can play all 3 OF positions, well above average, including CF, depending on which scouting personnel you read.

And no matter what we think of these two players, it boils down to the fact that Preller likes "his" guys that came up through TEX MiLs. So basically Preller has a man crush on Gallo. Thats the biggest separator!

Dont get me wrong, not really advocating for Gallo, just see the writing on the wall. Preller has a man crush on Gallo.

You're certainly right about AJ crushing on his Texas guys.....shame it hasn't done him any favours.

In corresponding moves, pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore, reliever Junior Fernández and outfielder Lars Nootbaar have been recalled from Memphis.

Matthew Liberatore was the alternative to Weathers as 1st round pick in 2018 ...

Gallo replacing Myers in RF would be ok ..especially with his struggles in NY..Gallo will be 5/60 at most in FA .. maybe more like 5/50... the OF market in FA is horrible Gallo/Judge (he will sign BIG)/Comforto (inj)/Benentendi and Myers... everyone else is yuck yuck... and no CFers... which is our weakness... Profar is #3 ranked LFer overall (lol) #1 in Defense #11 in wRC+... He is having a great year and we aren't even loving him ... CF is the big HOLE Grish is #20 out of 20 CFers that qualify (dead last)... I would rather have Gallo vs Myers in SD but it will come down to $$ in RF

What to do in CF? Instead of overpaying Turner (LAD) to go to the grass or trade for Expensive (prospect wise and $$ wise down the line) Reynolds (Pitt)...How about ADELL (Angels) once their #1 prospect now fallen off a lot and no ABs in Anaheim with Marsh/Ward and Trout to give him a real shot...

How does everyone feel about a Kim for Adell trade once Fernando comes back.. Kim is playing at nearly a 5 WAR pace ..is he too much for a potential ++ bat in CF or just the right gamble AJP needs to make to improve the lineup if Grish continues to struggle like this...Adell would fit in with Hassell and Wood (perhaps Mears) down the line... thoughts?
