What would this trade look like????

A blockbuster to the max! Soto is a superstar / elite hitter with 2 1/2 years control. Washington does not have a payroll issue and is looking to lose most of the rest of their team to FA after the season. Don’t have to trade him so they will be demanding multiple premium prospect as well as the buying taking the full $17.1MM contract. Will not want any veteran filler unless it is as a throw-in to offset some 2023 Soto’s salary.

Clearly the Padres would want and need him but not sure how they handle his $17MM in 2023 and what should be more in arbitration for the next few years. With major long term commitments for Machado and Tatis … a $350-400MM dollar 10 year extension would be along shot. Would be a challenge with three players making $100MM long term. My guess the Padres in 2023 would have to avoid signing more than one FA SP.

Now as for what players would go … guessing Abrams and Hassell then one of Campusano - Wood - Merrill group with a a couple of mid-range prospect added. More of a WASH choice than a Padre offer. Padres would probably resist on Gore given they would not be signing all the FA SP … still need a staff.

IF the mix of prospects was compelling enough for WASH … might get them to take Profar who carries a decent AAV as a partial cost offset. Alternatively, they might bite on Kim vs Profar depending on the mix.

The kind of deal Preller could pull off if winning in 2022-23 is the driving force. He as enough elite prospects to make it work.

It would cost us Musgrove as well( for 23’ and beyond) as we would not be able to afford to re-sign him.

So we definitely couldn’t include Gore in the deal.

Did a quick look at the AAV position the Padres could potentially drop to before signing FA … does leave a lot of room for FA signings but does open a lot of needs to sign FA.

FA would drop the AAV by about $55MM: Myers (13.8); Clevinger (8.0); Stammen (4.0); Johnson (3.0); Cano (0.6); Manaea (9.8); Musgrove (8.6); and Rogers (7.3).

Then the opt out crew COULD drop the AAV another $36.4MM if Hosmer (18.0); Profar (6.5); Martinez (6.4); and Suarez (5.5) all opt out … not likely.

Then some prime non-tender candidates could save $15.2MM: Voit (5.5); Lamet (4.8); Alfaro (2.7); Hill (1.3); and Adams (0.9).

IF all that happened AAV would drop about $107.7MM. That could easily cover Soto and the resigning of Musgrove and Manaea plus cover arbitration increases with some wiggle room for more adds.

I would also suggest that dealing Darvish (21.5) or Snell (13.1) or Pomeranz (8.5) or Kim (7.0) would add some room for roster reshaping with adds.

Bottom a LOT of moving parts … some not in the Padres control … but with some tough decisions (and luck) keep a pretty strong pitching staff for years to come at the least plus still fill the holes in the offense.

Paddock had his 2nd Tommy John Surgery today. I feel bad for him and Minnesota . Just waiting for them to cry damaged goods and want to get another player .

Then we'd go to Cleveland and demand Miller/Naylor/ Quantril back for Clevenger......

The STL Cards are calling up Matt Liberatore and Nolan Gorman for the series this weekend against the PIT Pirates.

The reason this is so cool to me is because these two kids have been on the same baseball team since playing travel club ball since 9 years old. Including playing on the same high school team. I have been one of the umpires on the field for probably 200 games for them since the age of 10-16.

Congrats to those two making the MLs, at the same time, and on the same ML team! What are the odds?

On a personal note, and also a baseball note…my Son graduated High School last night and is headed to either the University of Georgia or Georgia Tech this Fall. His name….Tyler Nevin.

So,I’ve been somewhat interested in Phil Nevin’s son as he’s hit the Big Leagues with the Orioles…also named Tyler Nevin.

What’s cool is I met Phil when he was in AA with the Tigers in Jacksonville Fl and he had never met another person named Nevin outside his own family. Then or course he went on to the Major Leagues and eventually the Padres and had some great years. Now some 30 years later we both have Sons with the same name.I hope to run in to Phil again some day just to see if he remembers and to let him know of the coincidence.

Just thought I’d share as I’m super proud of my Son who graduated Summa Cum Laude and is headed to be a Mechanical Engineer.I also bought him a Tyler Nevin Rookie Card just for fun.😉

Another installment from overreaction from fake tough guys....

So, to get this right, Anderson refers to himself as a modern Jackie Robinson, another black man. Then Donaldson calls him Jackie and the WHOLE White Sox team( led by head tough guy Tony Larussa) thinks it's racist......what am I missing????

Baseball is the best sport we have- these modern players need to stop trying to f**k it up.

With roughly $70 mil (look upbcalculation as much as $107 mil off the books... but ill say $70 cones off... (counting on Hos staying at 3/39 left saving us around $7mil per)...IF we go after Soto......

CJ Abrams (1) + Hassell (3)+ Kim (after Tatis Jr comes back..so figure 7/4/22 trade for the meme)+ Campy(4) and Max Ferguson (15) + Lamet (to offset 2023$$ ) for Soto

Soto arb $$ for 2023 $25 mil... as AJP works on a long term deal..(which corresponds with Myers (23) and Hosmer (2026) dropping off the books... that leaves us with $45 mil with Our own FA pool of

P Musgrove *$22per a must resign

P Clevinger

P Manea

P Rogers*$12per next close to must

Leaves us $11 mil

After all this (for 2023)

1B Hosmer

2B Cronesworth

SS Tatis Jr

3B Machado

C Nola/Alfaro

LF Profar

CF Grisham

RF Soto

DH Voit

SP

1. MUSGROVE

2.YU

3. GORE

4. SNELL

5. MARTINEZ

CL- ROGERS

BP CASTILLO

BP BAEZ

BP SUAREZ

BP MOREJON (6TH SP)

BP Cristmat

BP Adams

BP Stamen

BP Garcia

The rest gone....

Bench and CF/LF competition

Utility Batten (AAA 22)

CF/COF Ruiz (AA 22)

So $11 mil to upgrade LF/CF/SP/BP ...with the likelihood of Snell or Yu being traded to refocus$$$... my next signing would be Manea

Would also target in FA

OF

Gallo

Benintendi

Maybe Wil back cheap

Other P in case we can't get Manea or Clev back

Verlander - 1yr deal $20 + type

Others...

So YES we can afford Soto...YES our system would be bare...YES AJP would have the draft.. International signing and trades to replenish the system

Prospects left of interest

Batten ..Ruiz.. both ready to challenge for 23 roster

Mears..Wood..Merrill.. 2024

Others will take steps fwd and sone will fade away...
