Am I correct that once the world series starts that if the Padres haven't named their manager beforehand they will have to wait until the series is over?

Don't know if there is a specific prohibition by rule ... but that has been the policy so as not to detract from the World Series.

Good chance they name their guy on Monday ... off day before World Series ... and generally a good time for a news conference. Name may leak out on Sunday ... since the Fowler interviews were done last week and there is time for offer - acceptance - contract details. (Unless there is a "mystery candidate" still in the playoffs).

Padres would want the new manager in the fold to start orientation on the roster and plans for the winter ... plus get an early run at the new coaches they want to lure.

I am going out on a limb and calling Washington Manager and Tinsler Bench Coach. 2 for 1... Washington is a great Manager got the Rangers to the WS 2 X's.... Lost both .. When he leads us to back to back WS this time around (with Tinsler at his side) he will bring a parade to SD with him... Let's Go!

Did hear a discussion that Texas MAY not allow Tingler to leave for a bench coach role .... I guess he is still under contract with Texas and they let him interview for a “promotion” to Manager but only that.

On the other side, if Tingler is a hot managerial prospect, he will keep interviewing and likely get a managerial slot before Washington’s tenure is over. If he is not a hot managerial prospect ... why add him as the bench coach. Then again, why would Tingler want to move laterally?

Part of the discussion was if they hired Washington they should add an experienced ML bench coach with an analytics facility to support Washington who they don’t think will totally adopt analytics as part of his role (which is a concern since the front office ... and all of baseball does). An earlier discussion was the need for a someone to basically take on handling the in-game pitching which does not appear to be Washington’s strong suit.

IF they name Washington ... we may turn very quickly to which of the current coaches survive and who they bring in. IF they name Tingler the same question but probably a different set of support needs.

Is Bench Coach really a “lateral move”?

His current position isn’t exactly one step from a Managerial position as Bench Coach usually is.
Question....who is the Padres MLB Development Field Coordinator and was he considered for the Managerial position?

Is it Sam Geaney?

Geaney is Director of Player Development ... don’t think the Padres have “Field Coordinator” as such.

I think Tingler is considered an “assistant GM” and was the “interim bench coach” during the last Texas managerial change. So, likely in Texas’ view, Tingler to bench coach is lateral (or even downward).

Not sure anyone in the Padres front office has bench coaching experience .... but isn’t A.J. Ellis still in Player Development for the Padres? Many think a future as a manager and the always desired catcher’s mind ... would not be surprised if he gets the bench coach nod ... and becomes Manager in waiting. Padres may even prefer Ellis over Tingler since that working relationship with the front office is already established allowing only the Washington - Ellis relationship to develop.

That would seem pretty quick for Ellis.

I don’t necessarily disagree but it seems he would spend some time in the Minors managing?

I have concerns about both Washington and Tingler ... but probably would opt for Washington in the current situation and then really work hard to “support” him with the coaching staff.

On Washington, I keep going back to the concern that since he left Texas after a long very successful run ... he has barely been able to get managerial interviews and has not been chosen in the few he has had.

Didn’t he interview with Atlanta but they gave the slot to Snitker ... then hired Washington as a coach. All those teams in the past 5 years that have hired new Managers must be viewing Washington with a different insight than the “outsiders” who only know his past record and his highly rated INF coaching skills.

Sort of a missing analysis from the media ... media does tend to focus on the plus side of all candidates and minimize the minuses.

Maybe quick ... but the Preller / Fowler probably have a pretty good read on him as an in house guy and when he retired he was projected as a future manager.

As bench coach he would have maybe 3 years to develop the on-field managerial skills behind Washington plus if you buy into as an elite defensive catcher he already knows how to manage in-game situations and probably pitching staffs (apparently not Washington’s strength).

Think the ship has sailed on the need for minor league managerial experience across MLB.

Washington was the Texas manager from 2007 - 2014 with World Series appearance in 2010 and 2011.

Ian Kinsler was with Texas from 2006-2013 with 3 All-Star appearances .... one during the 2011 championship campaign.

Heard some commentary a week ago that we should see Kinsler back in 2020 (not clear on the role) .... likely that commentary had no insight on Washington but if they hire Washington will Kinsler's return be more likely?

Here's a non-Padres' perspective on Jayce Tinger, from Eno Saris at The Athletic ...

Tingler might have the most interesting resume on this list. He’s been an assistant general manager. He’s been a coordinator of instruction in the Dominican, one of a couple roles he’s served in player development. And then, in 2018, he was an interim bench coach for the Texas Rangers after Jeff Banister left.

If, as a team, you’re looking for someone that can bring together all the separate parts of the organization, Tingler’s a great pick. He’s fluent in analytics, he’s fluent in Spanish, he’s fluent in coaching, and he’s ready to lead.

“Just a good mindset,” said someone who has worked with him in the past.

Experience in every facet of the game, and a willingness and drive to put it all together: maybe that’s why Tingler has been mentioned as a front-runner in at least one city.
