Adrian Morejon

Spring Training Notes: March 11

Adrian Morejon and Michel Baez, both working back from Tommy John surgery last spring, threw bullpen sessions. Neither has reached the one-year mark in their recovery, and they’re unlikely to be ready for game action until later in the spring. Morejon, who turned 23 last month and still hasn’t thrown 200 total professional innings since signing in 2016, remains an incredibly interesting wildcard for the organization.

His K/IP was unbelievable (6!) ... but the rest of his stats, not so good ...

6 up, 6 down last night for Adrian Morejon!

And ... the "amatuer scouting report" I got says ... threw 98 mph ... but curve balls did not have much bite ... a little yellow flag ...

What did you see?

He looked great. FB consistently 97-98 with excellent control. Splitchange and Curveball looked good to me. Maybe could have had slightly better control of the CB, but who couldn't? Opposing team seemed pretty well overmatched. He was calm, collected, in-control and took care of business. Makes me excited to see him in the rotation again next year!

Time to worry?

Nah.....was bound to happen at some point.

Pit just did a good job of putting the ball in play with hard contact....too many found a hole.

It's not like they were hitting 450 ft bombs off him

Padres opted to give Morejon a relatively light ST workload given his use during the 2025 season.  16 of his 20 pitches were strikes, so the command and, from what I saw, the velocity were there - just some bad luck.  The injury history still worries me, but he seems to have gotten stronger and more resilient as he has gotten older.  This is his walk year and as the Padre who I believe has been in the system the longest, hope we can hold onto him after this year.

Morejon got into 60 games in 2024 and 75 games in 2025 ... both seasons with ERA under 3.00. So not worried about health (at least more than any other pitcher). He is only 27 and the Padres have no real legit LHRP option.

I expect him to be the effective LHRP out of the pen in 2026. Where speculation comes in: 1) if the Padres want, what does it take to extend him at 28 as an elite LHRP?; 2) if extended and given the coming issue in 2027 of potentially losing Pivetta, King (maybe), Musgrove (not returning from injury), others FA (Canning, Marquez, Buehler) leaving only Vasquez as a starter ... do they sell becoming a SP to Morejon?

Have to consider the cost of backfilling all the other potential vacancies in light of major contract increases already committed to Machado, Tatis, and Merrill and likely big ARB increase for at least Miller. Preller does allow his FA to "test" the FA market rather than push to sign them in their walk season ... so speculation should linger.
