This guy still has big time potential. I have been waiting for him eagerly ever since the Padres signed him. Hopefully he will break out soon.

Well, first he needs to make it to 100 IP in a year while staying healthy.  Last 3 years:  63, 65, 44 total IP.  Just joined AFL team, makes 1 appearance, scratches from 2nd appearance stiff lower back...

No fault of his, but Morejon is THE guy the MLB vets are referring to as the Front office (NOT Andy Green) focusing on development over winning, when they inexplicably called him up on July 21st when nowhere near ready in innings or results in Minors to be called up yet.

Good news is he's young, but an ideal A+ year for Morejon IMO is shaking the extremely concerning impression that his frame can't hold up for a year, and simply pitching 20 starts / 100 IP hopefully dominant, in AA.  Because he hasn't stayed healthy, he's clearly been surpassed on the timeline not only by Gore, but also Patino.  Arm/workload just not built up yet.  Utterly NO idea why Pads called him up to pitch 2 inning stints vs. trying to stretch him out a little in AA?  He was not set up to succeed in MLB, and it rightly breeded resentment in the clubhouse.

I keep reminding myself that Morejon is still only 20 (younger that most college picks) and has the raw stuff that made him a large bonus signing in 2016. Potential is illusive but clearly should be carried as long as possible.

Now I do agree that the call-up is "curious" to be kind. Not as though he was burning up the minors, will result in eroding his minor league option years sooner than justified which will force the Padres to make a keep (or DFA) decision on him a year sooner, hard to see how this helped his development.

I can only guess that Morejon's call up was to add a LHP (was near the end of July) and he was the best option. It probably does not help the analysis / narrative that he went to the DL less than 3 weeks after the call-up ... so for all we know (baring the injury) he might have been an effective LHP option out of the pen.

However, he does need to stay healthy for a full season ... maybe get in 100-120 innings in AA (my guess as to his placement) to reboot his prospect status. Still even if they use the 3 remaining option years (ages 21-22-23) he still would be only 24 making his final bid with the Padres. That is still a pretty big window for him to achieve his raw potential.

I am sure the call-up was a PR thing. When things go badly the Padres can just say "look, it's not over, we still have more talent and here it is!" It was just a distraction.

David Beebe (Hawaii):

Who has the better big league career, Morejon or Baez?

Kyle Glaser: If I'm being 100 percent honest, I don't have faith in Morejon staying healthy. Thus, Baez. I originally had Baez ranked higher because of that, but it's tough to bury a 20-year-old who touches 98 from the left side and and has two potential plus secondaries, so my editors and other evaluators pushed for Morejon to be ranked higher. Still, I think when all is said and done Baez has the more consequential big league career, if for no other reason than he stays on the mound.

Nick R (San Diego):

Who has the best pure stuff of any starter in the org not named Gore or Patino?

Kyle Glaser: Adrian Morejon. His stuff is equal to or better than both of them across the board. His command and durability are not.

Seems like the right attitude and approach. Hope it translates.

Tough spring debut ... No soup for you ... 1 year! 🙂

Actually his spring debut was pretty solid! It was the follow up that wasn't so great =/

I have said this countless times when I was pushing the Baez bandwagon this offseason. I have no idea why, but Morejon's stuff doesnt seem to play up to the ML level.  Several posters kept lauding his stuff, and I agree it seems like he should be serviceable. However, he gets shelled. I am not a scout, but what I can identify are correlations. Each occurence reduces the likelihood of coincidence.

Adrian Morejon, LHP, Padres

Morejon settled in as a spot starter/long man for the Padres last year and pitched to a 4.66 ERA with 25 strikeouts and four walks in 19.1 innings. With Dinelson Lamet uncertain to be ready for Opening Day, he’s competing for a chance to fill a rotation spot early in the season.

Scout’s Take: “He’s coming around. His last start was really good. It’s a matter of strikes with him and fastball command, but his last start was really positive. He’s able to throw the changeup for strikes, the curveball for strikes and get outs with all three of his pitches. When he’s able to do that his 97 plays even better. I think whether he can be a true starter is still to be determined. He’s going to have to repeat it 3-4 times in a row which has been his issue in the past, but at this point I think it’s just a matter of things slowing down for him. If he can take that breath and slow the game down and say all ‘I gotta do is throw a strike with my curveball, then I know I can throw the 97 right by him’. I don’t think he’s there yet, but I think he’s going in the right direction.”
