AAA El Paso Chihuahuas

PreviousPage 4 of 4

Another wonderful performance by the pitching staff supported by solid offense by Dixon, Hinojosa, Hollis and others.  Got worried when Weathers was brought in but only gave up a solo HR.  Baez and Cosgrove were very good behind an excellent effort by Avila.  With the split, Chihuahuas have to be in the driver's seat, but need to put OKC away this weekend.

A couple of other notes on the Chihuahuas game.  Avila showed a repertoire very similar to Lizarraga but with a better change-up.  Dixon was behind in the count 0-2 then worked it to 3-2 before he blasted a 402 ft home run over the high wall in right center; previously he smashed (102 mph exit velocity) double over the left fielders head.  With the win, EP only needs to win one of the two remaining games with OKC to clinch the division ,since they will then have a better head to head record if the teams are tied.  It would be nice to do it tomorrow!

Felipe made it interesting in the 9th, but EP pulled it out, making 3 of 4 full season Padres teams in the playoffs!  Was a bullpen day and EP made it work with the exception of some anxious moments in the 9th.  Dixon looked human today, but ump made some questionable strike calls early in his ABs and Dixon really didn't look comfortable.  Luckily, Fernandez came through as well as Rosario, Hinojosa and Batten to win the day!  Key stats were keeping the OKC Dodgers off the bases by giving up few walks and not allowing the HR.  Bullpen was the strongest part of the team going down the stretch and it was utilized perfectly during this series.  Kudos to another great coaching job!

It should be Groome and Avila piggybacking against Reno in Las Vegas to win the championship on 9/30.  Here's hoping it happens1

Okay, after 2 blow out losses time to get the regulars on the field to regain some momentum and get everyone's head in the game.  Bull pen took a big hit today, but this is Albuquerque, which is even more of a HR park than Las Vegas.  Still don't expect to see either Groome or Avila until the PCL championship game, so need to get some length out of a potential starter or two - maybe they'll move Eshelman back to EP along with Bachar and send down Lugo and Waldron - to close out the season.

Not the strategy I would have used, but that's why I'm not a manager!  EP clinched sole possession of the division title by winning tonight, so didn't have to use the tiebreaker, which had already given the title to the Chihuahuas.  With Dixon promoted to San Diego, might have a tougher time winning it all.  It would be interesting to see if Liberato sneaks through waivers and, if so, is allowed to play in the playoffs.   Got to be happy for Dixon - he earned it after fighting back from injury this year.

I'm kinda/sorta bum'd that Dixon got called up ... wonder if he'd rather play in AAA championship ... prolly not ...

Sept. 27: IF/OF Brandon Dixon selected from Triple-A El Paso; OF Luis Liberato designated for assignment
Dixon has raked in the Minors all year, posting an absurd .374/.442/.823 slash line between Double-A and Triple-A. Now, he'll look to play himself into something of a pinch-hit/bench role with the Padres. The righty-hitting Dixon, who would be eligible for the postseason roster in place of a player on the 60-day IL, can play both infield and outfield corners.

"I haven't had a set position for about five years, so I'm guessing it's going to be similar," Dixon said. "Outfield, infield, whatever they need, I'll just be ready."

Dixon, who owns a .228 career batting average across 558 plate appearances with Cincinnati and Detroit, was a childhood Padres fan, born in La Jolla.

"To be wearing the uniform now, it's unreal," Dixon said.

From today's DFR ...

What Lies Ahead: El Paso will have an off-day, as they travel to Las Vegas to meet the Reno Aces in a one-game, winner-take-all PCL Championship Game. In the International League, the Durham Bulls will battle the Nashville Sounds for the International League title. If El Paso wins on Friday, they will play the International League champ for the overall Triple-A title on Sunday. The club announced Jay Groome, who worked an abbreviated start Tuesday, as their PCL Championship starter. Presumably, Avila will be available to start Sunday.
