30-man Active O.D., 40-man MLB, 60-man "Taxi" Rosters

Lin's article says the thinking behind calling Campusano up is that it would allow them to take full advantage of Nola's versatility. I think the idea would be to strengthen the lineup against lefties. Castro, Hosmer, Moreland, Grisham, and Garcia all struggle against lefties. Profar's success against them last year is starting to look like a fluke and they don't seem to have much faith in Mateo at the plate.

If Campusano could handle catching against lefties, Nola could play 1st or maybe LF. Getting one of those guys out of the lineup against lefties could be big.

I fully believe that Nola can play LF. He played SS in college, making LeMahiue move off SS. He was drafted by the Marlins as SS, and made it to the ML as a SS. Mattingly loves him as SS, and told him the only way he was going to make the team was if he started catching. Since they already had a regular at SS.

I can see the logic for another strong RHH but maybe overblown since the Padres are 8th in MLB OPS vs. LHP.

Actually the worst starter vs. LHP is Grisham .... no idea how to cover that with this roster and keep decent defense but expect that we may see a bit more of Mateo in CF just to test out his bat and see if he is usable in the playoffs. I guess the recall of Allen or Almonte could be possible but don't really expect either to hit much. Hopefully they don't see this as a need to move Myers to CF vs. LHP so they can get a RHH upgrade in a corner.

Padres do have currently one position player slot (if they go back the the normal 13) at the expense of an extra RP ... so easy to make that part of the move.

IF Allen or Almonte are not appealing .... plus if Mejia is not ready (he has played corner OF reasonable well) ... there are no other RHH (except Rivas) at the alternate site except Campusano.

=============

As for Campusano .... clearly great POTENTIAL and coming off a great year in A+ ... but has to be a great leap of faith that jumping from A+ with only the alternate site for further development will make Campusano an effective ML hitter NOW. Olivares and Torrens had outstanding seasons in AA last year ... that did not translate to effective ML offense this year.

IF Nola goes to a corner, not going to allow Castro to catch vs LHP (weak there) .... means Campusano not only has to adapt to ML hitting he has to develop into a ML catcher quickly during a playoff run. That is an awful lot to bet on a catcher from A+.

Also, not sure moving Nola off the catching role ... he is new to this staff and probably would be better served catching to get in total sync with the staff and comfortable for the playoffs. Moving Nola around because they can does not mean they should ... think Myers. In the short run will moving Nola around also negatively impact his bat?

Not sure I have a better idea ... unless they push Pham or Mejia to get back sooner. Both have the ML experience and more advanced hitting profile.

I see in the side bar Padres added Ona to the alternate site ... no idea what he has been doing during the layoff but he did have have a hot early AA last year (but very limited AB) ... give him couple ABs at the alternate site and  maybe he is an option as a RHH for LF .. not a good one mind you ... but an option.

With no sense if / when Pham or Mejia are ready to recall ... guess this is a fair debate. Would be more comfortable in a playoff game with either of them than any AA/A+ rookie with virtually zero ML time.

With the trade of Olivares and Potts not many RH hitters of note in the system beyond Ona and Campusano.   Don't see either of them coming up until late 2021 at the earliest but getting a lot of time in the Arizona Instructional league or whatever it is being called.  Concur with keeping Nola behind the plate and filling in with Profar, Mateo or Allen (not Almonte) until Pham comes back to share lead-off duties with Grisham.  Pham has been traveling with the team and otherwise is in shape so it's just a matter of when that hamate bone heals sufficiently to be effective at the plate.  He's our wild card right now on offense but if he plays to his norms, we should have an even more impressive offense.

Is Allen Cordoba still around?  It would be a wonderful story if he could bounce back from that tragic traffic accident a couple of years ago.  RH hitter and can play OF and INF.

Yep, still under Padre contract ... Rule 5 eligible unless he is clocking out of minor league control as a 6 year minor league FA (not sure how 2020 will count and how to consider 2 DSL and 2 Rookie ball seasons) ... but probably will not.

I always like his potential and a very good A+ season last season ... so his stock has to be on the ascend in the Padres structure as a versitile RHH.

Given the Padres have pretty much cleared out other Rule 5 prospects and a very large number of current roster options will be out of minor league options in 2021 ... may have a good chance to be added to the 40 man this winter. He may have a minor league option to go.

Given his history .... sure going to pulling for him.

Per Jeff Sanders:

RHP Justin Lange, the 34th overall pick in June, and catcher Blake Hunt have been added to the player pool working out at USD. Also told Jorge Oña has been there for some time and destroying baseballs.

Maybe he does become that option for a RHH LF?

Apparently Ona got hurt in ST I after being optioned to Minors with a bad shin bruise off foul ball.     I think partly they knew he was "no way" to MLB this year, too, plus so deep in OF, so deliberately waited till after the trade deadline.  waiting for this opportunity.  It really is big for him to get the hitting work and maybe what, 10? 12? 15? real AB/day vs live talented pitching.  He's a forgotten man, but with the OF exodus of:  Trammell, Olivares, Cordero, & Naylor; he may now be the only top 30 non C position player prospect at AA (or AAA) next year.

With CF LH, and only 1 more year of Pham (or Profar)...  hole to be filled in LF in 2022.

Justin Lange & Blake Hunt got added too. Especially happy about Hunt, because this implies he is NOT a PTBNL in a trade.

RP Steven Wilson & 3B/1B Jason Vosler were added earlier.  Wilson under Pads control.  I think there is a chance that the Padres actually select Jason Vosler (Minors FA) to a MLB contract after the season.   Remember 18 months ago when we traded for him to compete with France to start at 3B? 🙂   I always thought he was depth to France, now gone.  Interesting LH/DH depth; possible replacement for Moreland in 2022?

It's possible... he was good enough to be picked & stick in R5, then his development got torpedoed by the bad car accident.

Based on his 2019 I had him in the low 20's range if still considered as a prospect, and that was before all the trades!

But I don't think after a good 2019 at High A, and lost 2020 season where he wasn't even added to the 60-man pool that he will be selected to MLB.  But he's an obvious candidate to re-sign as a Minors FA.  He should; OF & INF wide open at AAA/AA.
