If I'm Craig Stammen I'm waiting for the "Coach wants to see you in his office" comment from the BP Coach.
He is the weakest link in the BP and we just acquired FOUR relief pitchers.
Something has to give.

I see an IL coming for a pitcher without a minor league option.
Just hard to see ... at this moment ... dropping someone off the 40 man before having Rothchild / Tingler get a first hand look / evaluation of Altavilla / Williams / Adams.
At least with Adams ... have a couple of weeks on the IL and evaluation at the alternate site before they have to make a readiness call on him.
Should know this afternoon when the should be making known the adds / deletes on the 28 man. Add Clevinger - Allen - Altavilla - Williams ... drop ????

13 RP have to go down to 10 (probably). IF the goal is to have the most productive remain ... then consider the August performances (worst):
LOB%: 13th (Stammen 42%); 12th (Guerra 44%); 11th (Altavilla 57%) ...... 10th (Williams 60%); 9th (Johnson 73%)
WHIP: 13th (Guerra 2.55); 12th (Stammen 1.82); 11th (Altavilla 1.73) ..... 10th (Patino 1.65); 9th (Williams 1.55)
BABIP: 13th (Guerra .531); 12th (Stammen .382); 11th (Williams .364) ... 10th (Rosenthal .353); 9th (Johnson .348)
Would not seem good for Guerra or Stammen ... the other drop is still a question but Williams does have an option and maybe needs some tinkering at that alternative site.

I still say Williams & Morejon optioned, Allen active. After sleeping on it, I was really thinking Patino would be the last guy optioned. My thought was that with a "real" 1-5 SP & no more bullpen games that length isn't as important. Even with Quantrill gone now, it seems like (at least at the start of 15 games in row after an off day with everyone fresh) there's enough length remaining with Perdomo & more veteran RP's. If you think about it; Patino, Morejon, & Baez all came up more as a direct result of Joey Lucchessi going down & the need for length than because they "earned" it...
But the old "arm fatigue" or "stubbed toe" IL occurred to me too. That obviously would allow them to keep Patino up over Guerra or whomever.

MLB gave the OK to bring in some prospects after Sept 18th to start the winter development program ... should be in interesting list .. who and how many.

Re Stammen, he's not the same guy he was the last 3 years for us. But he occasionally had "implosion" games those years too.
He's a pro, and I'm sure 100% accountable for his results... but he's gotten thrown under the bus a little too. His role this year was supposed to be come in the 4th/5th inning when the SP is faltering & try to stop the bleeding for 1+ IP. Him appearing in more high leverage late innings is a direct result of Pom on IL, and Pagan struggling, but more so an INEVITABLE result of the "bullpen" games every 5th day.
I think now that the pen is re-stocked, rested, & Clevinger has dispensed with the bullpen games, we will see a significant uptick from Stammen. Still likely to go off roster in the offseason packaged with another asset of value like Lucchesi or a prospect. But I don't like the banging on a guy who's been a key piece through 3 crappy years.

I think Stammen will survive this round of changes.
I do think it would be in the Padres best interest in if Guerra is the player to the IL ... he can ride that out for the season ... remain under Padre control for next season ... not be a very very weak link on the playoff roster.
IF it is Guerra to IL ... Williams optioned because he can be (and gives the Padres some time to work with him at the alternate site) ... then either Morejon or Patino or Perdomo optioned?
That preserves all the players under Padre control ... give the Padres time to full assess the new toys ... gives some real injury protection. If the Padres are in the drivers' seat to get into the playoffs, may not be the best 10 now but a couple of weeks to sort it out.

The Padres have announced a series of roster moves, including IL placements for outfielder Wil Myers and reliever Emilio Pagan. They also optioned David Bednar and Taylor Williams to their alternate site, and added new acquisitions Mike Clevinger, Greg Allen and Dan Altavilla to their 28-man roster.
