2026 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 4, 2025, 1:08 pmI see the starting 8 on offense set and Preller just trying to fill the DH/bench with $1-2MM types like in the past … Solano, D.Peralta, Sheets. 1 or 2 make the roster.
Pen has quality and depth so do not expect much beyond adding some minor league types hoping for the next Estrada.
So, SP is the question not cheap even for mediocre arms … becomes an issue of cash budget / CBT … by my estimate not a lot left to deploy. If they stretch King may be the only target.
Given budget, lockout in 2027, and unknown changes from the new CBT … not sure the Padres will want to make any more long term commitments as they are stretched going forward with the backloaded deals in place.
Maybe go with the current mix and upgrade cheaply at the trade deadline?

Considered that … but some big increases in existing contracts and arbitration decisions plus the likely desire to drop back under the CBT threshold.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 9, 2025, 1:01 pmLooking forward to a full season of Sheets,Laureano,Fermin & Miller next year.
Need a 1b/DH type and a couple Starters.
That's really about it so looking forward to another pretty uneventful offseason after we win the World Series

Quote from fenn68 on September 12, 2025, 5:16 amAs Vasquez keeps legitimizing himself as a rotation piece and with the return of Musgrove ... IF King is the one FA they re-sign (and he should be the prime target), 2026 could have a starting rotation of King - Pivetta - Musgrove - Dervish - Vasquez and that should be playoff quality.
That would allow them to use Miller as the closer (Suarez departs) and, at last until ST, that protects against Adam not being fully recovered to start the season. a RH relief corps of Miller - Adam - Estrada - Morgan should be an elite base. Morejon is the prime LHRP and guessing both Peralta and Matsui return (unless traded) for the LHRP corps.
All of that covers 12 of the 13 slots with out of option arms ... Reynolds, Marinaccio, Waldron in play for the last slot ... with Sears, Hoeing, Rodriguez, and Jacob who could be optioned.
With a King signing ... the pitching staff is set up to be strong ... and may create a chance to make some minor deals with "excess" to either fill some bench slots for 2026 or add some upper level minor league prospects for insurance for the later part of the season / the future.
Re-sign King ... pick-up Laureano's reasonable option ... and except for some low costs bench upgrades the 2026 team could be set. Then again this is Preller so ??????????????????

Not bad, but.... If Miller is in the pen to start next year that trade is a fail. We need to try to turn him into a SP.

Quote from fenn68 on September 13, 2025, 4:28 amAgree, I would want Miller to get a shot to be an elite starter ... and he might if they don't re-sign King and/or Adam is not ready for the start of 2026. IF Suarez, Adam, and Miller are out of the pen to start 2026 ... Padres will be in bad shape with no clear closer and a lack of depth.
With 4 more years of control, the Miller trade will be fine ... closer in 2026 then starter in 2027-29? I expect to Pivetta to opt out after 2026 (Padres will not re-sign him if they re-signed King) and no one coming in the system to replace him in 2027. Additionally Musgrove's contract runs out after 2027 (expect re-signed) and Darvish is gone after 2028 ... so there is a big need for Miller to be a SP over the last 3 seasons of his control.
IF things go right, Schoolcraft - Mayfield - Cruz (at least one) could be ready for 2028 but more likely 2029 ... so the need for Miller as a SP in 2027-29 is there and Preller seems to find closers / RP out of obscurity to cover the pen.

Quote from fenn68 on September 13, 2025, 5:02 amMarinaccio looked good ... yes vs the worst hitting team in the ML but looking at his previous ML / MiL work he has shown flashes of quality (some good strikeout stuff). At age 30 and out of MiL options in 2026 should get a real run for a relief role lengthening the pen. IF Niebla works his magic (as he did with Estrada) Marinaccio might be a key part of 2026 and beyond.
Could be an interesting battle between Marinaccio and Reynolds (also out of MiL options in 2026) for the ML roster in 2026. Both seem to have the raw "stuff" but not yet producing to potential. Plus arms with options will be contending: Rodriguez, Hoeing, Jacob, Hawkins, Pena, Castro ... so the pen should be in good shape and maybe set up up some trades out of the pen for bench support on the offense ... especially if Adam is healthy.
Unlikely but IF the Padres really want to gamble ... re-sign King, convert Miller to SP, then trade Pivetta ($20MM next season and then will opt out) but still should yield a quality prospect in return (maybe for the bench/DH in 2026) saving some payroll to achieve the CASH/CBT goals and/or redeploy on additional offense. Unlikely but this is Preller viewing contending now and for the coming years .. so moving an expensive 1 year control for a low cost multi-year control fits.
