2026 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on August 21, 2025, 5:14 pmQuote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2025, 4:37 pmO'Hearn mentioned in his interview, when comparing PETCO to Orioles Park in Camden Yards, that there was a wind tunnel pushing the ball toward RF in Baltimore. Obviously, wasn't thinking about negotiating a future contract but you could draw the conclusion that this greatly helped his stats while in Baltimore. Let's see how he finishes in PETCO this year before deciding upon pursuing him for another year or so. Agree that he'll be looking for his last contract, but I think most teams who have seen him over his entire career will be hesitant to give him the really big bucks he or his agent may think he can get.
Heard that about BALT park ... so his performance at PETCO for the remainder of the season will have a lot of influence.
Payroll (and how to deploy it) will be the biggest factor ... SP first?
O'Hearn may not be a big priority IF the Padres are OK with Sheets at 1B along with picking up Laureano's club option. If they went that way, they will have all 8 field positions covered and "only" have to cover the 9th hitter ... and that could be had cheaply using multiple options who may also fill OF/INF roles. Also, by not committing to O'Hearn for multiple years and a large AAV ... might give the Padres a better chance of extending Laureano who is a FA after 2026 (and Padres don't have a LF coming soon). Laureano vs. O'Hearn?

Quote from Randy Manese on August 21, 2025, 6:30 pmLaureano the better all around ball player and the better hitter - no brainer for me, it's Laureano over O'Hearn, if that's the choice I have to make.

With Laureano having the team option, you're right its a no brainer taking the option. However he is 31 this season, so maybe he is open to renegotiating the contract to extend it out and provide both him and SD with some security in LF.
As far as O'Hearn, if he likes it here, I like the idea of spending $12-15M a season over Arraez. Hopefully again he likes it here, performs well and wants to stay.

Quote from ultratvfan on August 26, 2025, 3:21 pmThe Padres 2026 schedule is out. They open the season at home vs the tough Detroit Tigers and end the season with the Dodgers and then the Dbacks. Also, the Yankees come here in September. Just a few highlights.

Quote from ultratvfan on September 3, 2025, 4:30 pmThe rotation needs to be a priority. King should be a priority to re-sign. I think Pivetta is already on team control and Musgrove will return in 2026. That leaves two spots to fill
Cortes and Cease are no good and, IMO Darvish has past prime and a has been. I think AJP needs to convince Darvish to waive his NTC and convince a trade partner to take on the rest of his contract.
Trading Bergert was a huge mistake.
Now, what good SPs FAs after the season will be available or is there anyone in the minors to bring up?

Musgrove
Miller (the next King, Lugo)
Darvish
#5: Vasquez; Sears; Waldron; Hoeing
—————-
Pen: Adam; Estrada; Morgan; Reynolds; Rodriguez; or who did not make #5 … LH: Morejon; Matsui; Peralta
always a surprise minor leaguer (Hawkins) or the like.

INF: Machado; Bogaerts; Cronenworth; Sheets; … Wagner; McCoy (or minor FA)
OF: Laureano (option picked up); Merrill; Tatis; … Johnson; Ornelas (or minor FA)
so, no major FA signing … and still COULD make the playoffs.

Sheets is controlled via arbitration through 2027. And I think they should spend the money that you want them to spend on Arraez on SP.
Additionally, they should try and rework the contract for Pivetta.

The lineup is pretty set for next year other than possibly 1B/DH
