2026 Padre Season

PreviousPage 9 of 10Next

It would be nice for he offense to "get lucky" these next 4 games on the road to take some of the pressure off the pitching staff.  Typically, the guys don't strike out 15 times a night like last night so have to see that as a one-off.  They have been hitting the ball hard, but a lot of times it is on the ground and right at an infielder - kind of the Eric Hosmer curse.  If the balls start falling into the gaps, we get a few bloopers combined with some "seeing eye" singles, this offense could turn into the 5 run per game line-up it is capable of.

I like what Stammen is doing trying to rest some guys who typically wear down in the dog days of summer/fall but I'd like to see more consistent production from Castellanos and the rest of the bench.  It's hard when you don't get consistent AB's but those guys aren't rookies and should be able to rise to the occasion to at least close to league average hitting-wise when they are in the line-up.  From the offensive side, not much to fall back on in the minors so what we see is what we have in the near future (and maybe until the trading deadline).

On the other hand, decisions will have to be made on who to send down when Canning and Matsui are brought up on or before 4 May.  Waldron looks like an easy choice, even if he has a good game today, to be DFA'd'; the harder choice is who in the bullpen goes down - barring a mysterious arm fatigue injury.  Hart, Morgan and Rodriguez have options but Marinaccio and Peralta don't and would surely be scooped by teams sorely needing RPs without having to trade for them.  My thought is send down Morgan and let him develop better command of his extensive repertoire.  Having he and Estrada coming back in May (Estrada may be down there until early-to-mid June) will be a luxury for our other high leverage RH RPs to get more time off as the season progresses.  That is why the Padres are so tough and have the Dodgers looking over their shoulders.

According to MLBTR and the Padres website, SD has signed Giolito to a contract with an option for 2027. I have not seen terms of the deal yet.

Edit: Apparently its for $3M this season and a mutual option for next season.

Only $3 mil…yikes.

Didn’t he turn down a $19 mil option?

Might be the 3m this year and 15m buyout variety

Apparently some escalators can take it to $8M, well short of his $19M option. That was a mutual option, so BOS could have declined it as well. So he was never going to get $19M this season.

According to MLBTR, Feliciano and Jones will only purchase between 30-40% of the Padres. Other minority owners will be found and stay in place from the Seidler days.

He will have controlling interest though.

I'm okay with Giolito at 3M but still my expectations of how effective he'll be are not much different from Canning and possibly a little better than Buehler and Marquez.  It will be a tough decision on who is effected when Giolito is brought up but by mid-May it may become obvious based on effective performances from today until then.  Hate to lose the depth by giving up on Buehler or Marquez so it could be someone like Hart being sent down.  Can take our time with Estrada (he even has an option remaining) and Pivetta should only come back when he can give us a strong 5 or 6 regularly - maybe after the all-star break.  While most teams will be struggling by then and looking to unload salary by the trade deadline, Padres pitching staff likely will be getting stronger, both in SP and RP as the season progresses.

Key will be to upgrade the bench - especially obtaining a reliable player hitting from the left side - to help our playoff challenges.

I've seen some conflicting reports on the Giolito contract. First I saw it reported as a 3m salary with another 5m available in incentives. Later I saw it reported as a 1.5m salary with a 1.5m buyout on a mutual option for 2027 that could escalate by a maximum of 3m based on the number of starts he makes. Either way it's a fairly modest commitment.

It looks like they have 25 days to add him to the major league roster. That should give him time to make 4 starts to get built up. Canning could be ready in the same time frame. These next few starts will be important for Marquez, Buehler and Waldron. They could be pitching to keep their jobs. If guys keep pitching well as other guys start to get healthy we could be looking at some tough decisions. Matsui seems like he's getting close. Estrada, Pivetta and Musgrove will hopefully all be back a little further down the line. I suppose if everyone is healthy and pitching well enough to make the decisions difficult it would be a good problem to have though.

Don't think we have a choice with either Canning or Matsui - must be brought up from rehab and brought onto the major league active roster on or about 4 May or we lose them via waivers/DFA/election of free agency.    Matsui has good supporting numbers down at El Paso while Canning not so much but on a different kind of rehab scheme - he should be fine to go in early May.

Got a little more time with Giolito and he'll probably need at least 3 minor league starts before he is ready even though he says he's been keeping himself "ready".  Time will tell who is bumped when Giolito is ready.
