Didn’t he turn down a $19 mil option?
Might be the 3m this year and 15m buyout variety
Apparently some escalators can take it to $8M, well short of his $19M option. That was a mutual option, so BOS could have declined it as well. So he was never going to get $19M this season.
My understanding was the mutual option became a player option (vested) after he pitched over 140 innings last year. So he turned it down!

From what I've read it was actually a 14m club option that vested into a 19m mutual option with a 1.5m buyout. The question becomes would the Red Sox have exercised the club option?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 24, 2026, 1:18 amCanning last pitched on 4/22 and is on a 6 day rotation, meaning he should pitch next on 4/28. He has yet to reach 75 pitches, so that is probably the goal for his next start. His rehabilitation period expires on 5/3, which is the day before he would have pitched if still on the 6 day rotation. Don't think they'll rush him to make that last start in the minors with less rest and will have him on a short leash when he does join the rotation. Waldron, who likely will be DFA'd to make room for Canning is scheduled to start on 4/29. That should be Waldron's last start before Canning makes his debut on either 5/4 or 5/5, the latter date is when Waldron would have pitched after his 4/29 start. My guess is they pitch Buehler on his regular rotation day, 5/4, and then slide in Canning on 5/5.
In the meantime, room also has to be found for Matsui on the active roster by 5/4. Least effective RP recently has been Morgan and since he has options, see him going down to make room for Matsui. Others with options are Hart and Rodriguez but both seem safe for the time being until Giolito and, a little later, Estrada, are ready. Of course, if either Buehler or Marquez tank, one of them could be released when Giolito is ready. Waldron will likely go unclaimed and will give us another emergency SP depth piece at El Paso; could DFA him as early as 4/30 to get Canning working with Niebla and staff before he pitches against the Giants in San Francisco.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 24, 2026, 2:54 pmPadres just sent Estrada to Lake Elsinore on a rehab assignment. Hadn't heard much on his injury status since he went on the 15 day IL on 4/10 so I guess this is a sign that it is progressing well. He'll have up to 30 days in rehab to show that he is fully healthy or he either can be moved to the 60 day IL, or if close to coming back, optioned to the minors for probably less than 20 days to save his last option opportunity. Expect Padres will be very cautious with him because they have many options to bridge the high leverage innings to get to Miller, so will be following how he does very closely. Ideally, comes back to round out the pen when the workload on Adam and Morejon, in particular starts to get a little heavy. Before that, however, should see Matsui from the left side of the pen return to the roster on or about 4 May. Nice problem to have so much depth in your pen.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 24, 2026, 4:02 pmDo we really need both Matsui and Peralta? Hart seems to be an innings eater from the left side, so I assume that leaves the need for just 1 late inning lefty?
Edit: Crap, almost forgot Morejon! Does it make sense to keep 4 lefties in your pen?
What gives?

Preller must be working hard to resolve this. The easy move is to option Hart but maybe not the best in the short run. However over a season good insurance in AAA. Also buys time to find a buyer in a trade. With Peralta and Matsui getting someone to take their contracts is a challenge… even with little return. As it is the RH side will have its own issue when Estrada returns.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 24, 2026, 9:57 pmEstrada pitched today at LE and got the win, going one inning and striking out one giving up no runs, no hits and no walks. He looked a little rusty, falling off the mound kind of off-balance a couple of times. Pitches were moving well and good velocity. Estrada may be ready sooner than later.
Have to mention that Schoolcraft pitched better but really needs to work on his mechanics. His left shoulder flies open on his delivery which effects his release point and hence his command. Got a lot of work to do.
