2026 Padre Season

PreviousPage 8 of 10Next

Fenn, thanks for the info on the coming off the 30 day rehabilitation max after being on the 15 day IL - wasn't aware of that caveat.  Still have hopes he'll be ready but looking over his shoulder to emergency starters in a pinch - Sears, Mendez and maybe even Hart, if necessary.  Matsui looking better lately, so he could be ready for short relief work - no pun intended.

Just saw breaking news on The Athletic that says the team is on the verge of being sold to a group led by Jose Feliciano. It says he's a co-owner of Chelsea football who made his money in private equity. The sale price is reportedly 3.9 billion! It would seem the group has some very deep pockets. That shatters the Mets deal.

We as Padres fans have always wanted an owner with deep pockets.

Fingers crossed 🤞🏽 🤞🏽 🤞🏽 🤞🏽

Jake Cronenworth is currently rated last in MLB for 2B( looking at the stats page on MLB.com)

Do France and Castellanos get more PT? I assume at some point the Pads will want to see Song in SD, as he's a legit IF back-up?

Or will we see Nando at 2B more frequently, until Jake figures it out?

Obviously with the 2nd best record in baseball, not looking to make many changes for now but can this group work for an entire year? With Ty and Nick, along with Andujar, all being very similar in skill set, surely the team will look to diversify at some point?

And if Pivetta is done, AJ will be looking for an arm somewhere. Maybe some of the above mentioned names can be packaged to bring that in?

As I recall when he bought Chelsea he actually pumped more money in (even running at a loss). Actually getting punished by the EPL for "over-spending" the league rules. So, it appears, spending will not be an issue.

Hard to pull apart the open spending vs the Chelsea operational decisions (players, etc) and how much he is involved. Chelsea is trying to move from older players to younger players while still being a competitive EPL team. So somewhat an unknown if he (or his wife who is a 50% owner) is hands on ... has his own person to come in and be the controlling owner for MLB purposes ... or just gives the current organization more control.

Can do a lot of speculation but could see the Padres make a move to lock down some of the current roster options to longer deals (e.g. Laureano, Morejon, Adam) soon. Maybe buyout the options for King and Pivetta. That would create some initial stability of a good team acknowledging little near term arrive in the minors.

Want to get carried away ... in FA ... Skubal this winter?

The deal will probably get finalized around the all-star break ... so might see the impact for the trade deadline then FA.

My guess ... as long as they are winning ... they go long with Cronenworth (maybe more off days). Ugly start but last season he was a top 10 2B in MLB (wRC+, WAR) and has been above average for years. Gets the benefit of the doubt.

Combine that with doubt that any significantly better options are available in a trade (or in our minors) at this point in the season ... (same idea on quality SP) ... so wait until near the trade deadline (see my comments on the potential new owner).

Padres will probably not know the future of Pivetta for 2 months (and for that matter Musgrove too) ... so with King and Vasquez in place and Buehler, Canning, Marquez, and Waldron competing ... that July / trade deadline window seems about right.

Side: no FA to be (unless a super star) has much trade value beyond a minor league prospect(s). So, France, Castellanos, Andujar, Laureano, Adam, Morejon are not going to get any significant ML return.

Song has to get hot in AAA before a call-up ... and both he and Cronenworth are LHH ... so not a clear profile to even platoon. Probably an injury is the only think that would create near term moves.

New ownership will want to make a splash and go after Skubal, however, if we can re-sign Laureano, Morejon and Adam at something below what Skubal is asking which would you prefer?  I'm thinking Preller makes the trade to shore up the SP at the trade deadline and goes after keeping the guys we already have.

That is a tricky call. At my core do not like big long term deals with pitchers (way too much risk of injury). IF signing longer term prefer position players.

However, without a couple of elite SP very hard to get to (and win) the World Series. IF Pivetta and Musgrove are out of the picture for the future and King has an opt out after 2026 (which he may exercise if a good season to get a longer term deal) .... Padres have little SP and not that much available on the FA market (and Padres have few compelling trade chips for a top of the rotation arm).

So, it sort of depends. IF Padres have healthy and effective Pivetta, King, Musgrove, Vasquez with almost any #5 ... would opt for spending on filling out the roster with spending on LF and 1B and retain Morejon. If they only have Vasquez might (reluctantly) go Skubal.

I did a couple of Google AI searches on how Chelsea has performed on the field and salary wise under the ownership of Feliciano.

The rough results has seen Chelsea rise towards the top level of the league in staff (players) investments, which indicates he is willing to spend on players. They have also it seems, while spending on prime time players, also have a willingness to invest in going younger and investing in player development. All the while improving in the standings as well.

Maybe we have another owner like Seidler prior to his passing, that is willing to spend on both sides of players, sign stars and spend on high end prospects???

It seems that he paid little regard to that leagues CBT, showing a willingness to go over that threshold to put a high end team on the field. I hope he brings that same bravado and check book to SD, and throw some money into the face of the Dudgers!!!

The schedule makers knew what they were doing when they didn't schedule the first meeting between SD and LA until late May.

If both keep winning it will be a big story when they finally meet.

We will have played 46 games before the first game against the dodgers.

At least the first series is at Petco

I saw a stat that said the Padres were the 2nd most unlucky offense according to xOBA in MLB behind only the Reds.

So the best record in baseball "and" the 2nd unluckiest?

Who'd a thunk it?

Obviously way early but I never bought all the "experts" predicting us to only finish around .500 and likely miss the playoffs.

Losing Arraez,Cease,O'Hearn and Suarez seemed a lot worse on paper to those who don't follow the team closely than it did to the rest of us paying close attention.
