2026 Padre Season
Quote from fenn68 on July 6, 2026, 3:18 pmIF (not ready to totally lock into being a seller yet ... but close) the Padres become sellers there is an interesting speculative piece on MLB.com on what teams may be looking for at the deadline ... and I focused on teams I see as legit contenders at this point.
Should be a decent demand for someone like Morejon (FA after the season) and given the demand for RP Peralta and Matsui might get some play if the Padres want to shed future contract commitments. Almost everyone wants to improve their pens. Add a need for a serviceable SP ... think King.
What might surprise is number of teams are looking for a RHH ... so France and Andujar might be in play. Decent hitters and very low costs.
Of course Miller would pull down a good haul. Padres will have to ask the question as to the need for the best closer in baseball on a team the next few years that will not contend.
*** maybe just being delusional but BOSTON may be looking for a RHH SS who can hit at Fenway ... so IF Boston get hot (they have pitching) and close the gap to the wild card and the Padres just fall out and become sellers ... could Bogaerts be a point of trade discussion between the two teams? Some complex mix of the Padres eating some contract or taking on a Boston bad contract (but less so than Bogaerts) and prospect exchange ... maybe? Short term value to Boston ... longer term value (reduced payroll to deploy elsewhere) to SD.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 6, 2026, 5:21 pmI'd eat $100 million of Bogaerts contract if I were the Pads!
Can you spread it out over, say, 10 years? Or does it have to be absorbed during his contract term?
Say if you trade Xander back to Boston for a couple of top, but lower minor league, prospects. Can the Pads pay the money up front? Or how does it work? Do the Pads just continue to pay the $8-10 million per year until the contract is up? I'd definitely do that. We can sign a SS for minimum and probably get the same amount of production.

It would be part of the negotiation between teams. So could be just eating $10MM each year for the rest of the contract (for example) or the Padres could pay all of the contract in the early years but nothing in the later years or ... well you get the point (and there is a lot of playing with the time value of money). However, usually it is just paying down each year proportionately ... Bogaerts is at $25MM ... we may not like Bogaerts and don't see him worth $25MM but he is a legit ML SS and probably is worth in the $15MM range (but probably not the full length of his contract).
If a deal is made ... not going to get top prospects (agree some real young lottery types is most likely at best) ... but the value assuming not going to contend near term is freeing up $15MM to help restock the team with younger talent.
Not likely but not impossible scenario.
