2026 Padre Season

PreviousPage 24 of 24

After a rough start to the season, Morejon has been elite amongst RP. That is good but sets-up a Padres problem as he becomes a FA after the season. Still in his 20s and with his body of work ... he should land a large multi-year deal.

Will the Padres be able to re-sign him? Hard to view alternatives / priorities on a team with a plus bullpen (but would lose to FA Morejon and Adam) vs the chance of a starting staff of Vasquez, Sears, and ??? if the opt outs are exercised, FA SP, and no recovery from Musgrove. Not forgetting improving one of the worst offenses in MLB.

As much as I like Morejon ... can the Padres win in the future with Miller / Morejon anchoring the pen while no SP or offense? Probably not, so that might suggest they let Morejon walk unless they give him the big money and try to convert him to a SP. Remember that there are not a lot of quality SP going to be FA and the ones that are will be in demand.

Along the same lines, if he keeps up his recent work, Buehler will also be in line for a large multi-year deal and still only 31 +/- ... likely another tough re-sign.

With the CBA/lockout, potential for some stricter CBT, new owners (payroll unknown), already committed contracts, limited quality FA, aging veterans  ... Preller (if he is still around) is going to have a big challenge to try to keep a winning team given no near term impact prospects filling in the blanks.

Does Andujar have ANY value at all? Would someone give us a lower level prospect for him, should he continue to be just an average hitter? I assume some team that thinks they have a shot would take a flyer on a decent MLB bat for a youngster 3 or 4 years away?

That would allow France to get ALL the AB's from the DH spot. And allow Sheets to play 1B every day. We really need to see if he can be that guy whilst he's still under control.

That would just leave LF to fill for next year.

The GM can then concentrate on building a new starting rotation.

Sure he has value ... but as a FA after the season and really just a DH/PH not a lot.

Has more value for the Padres in a rotational / insurance role. Not sure they would want Sheets in the line-up vs most LHP. If they moved Andujar .... don't see anyone close to filling his role ... especially if injury to France or Sheets or Taylor or .... clearly not Bowen, wasn't Solak, zip in AAA realistically since Bowen and Solak were the adds before.

In the part time role ... hitting better than most on the team (BA / OBP).

Probably not resigned after the season (at least on a ML deal).

Campusano sent today on a rehab assignment to EP.

Given the the time he missed ... likely on the rehab through the All-Star break.

From what I've read he was hitting and working in Arizona ahead of the rehab assignment just like Cronenworth was. He'll probably need a little more time as a catcher, but I'm hoping we'll see him fairly quickly.

You may be right ... his first rehab in 3 AB ... 2 hits (1 HR) and a BB.

Marquez came in for relief yesterday ... and was totally ineffective but in his prior rehabs was effective. Comes off IL rehab on Friday. Tough call if he is not ready to start ... difficult to option the ineffective Sears (who at least gives some innings) vs DFA (or IL) Marinaccio who has no minor league options and has been ineffective vs just DFA Marquez who was ineffective before the IL stint.

As ineffective as Marquez was before the IL (in limited innings) he actually had a better ERA than Canning or Sears ... so bad but not worst, I guess that is something?

Maybe more a choice if the Padres fall out of contention or a greater spate of SP injuries but after Brito internally ... looking as though Jagger Haynes (in SA) has stepped up his performance in May/Jun including being able to deliver 5-6 inning starts.

Will need to be added the the 40 man to protect from the Rule 5 (if it remains) this winter ... so why not in August to see what he has at the ML level ... sort of the same logic as Brito.

If the season goes really south ... a lot of veteran DFA then September tests out Brito - Haynes - Mendez?

==========================================================

IF the Padres are out of contention, Preller may have a tough choice if King is pitching well ... or mediocre. King has a $28MM player option (then after 2027 a $30MM player option) ... so,

a. if he is pitching really will likely will opt out ... should they trade him to get a decent return?

b. if he is pitching mediocre will likely opt in but do the Padres want to pay $28MM for mediocre ... so should they trade him if any teams will willing to take the risk in a payoff run?

c. if he is pitching poorly ... Padres are stuck as he will opt in and get paid $28MM next year.

Remember the Charger Raider game a few years back? Thursday night football? The Raiders DESTROYED the Bolts and ownership had no other recourse but to can the coach and GM?

This is 100% the making of AJ Preller. I thought the team would be sub .500 by the end of June( I was wrong) now looks like it might be by the end of the 1st week of July. And I see no chance of this getting any better.

Even should our stars revert to their offensive numbers, our frontline pitching is no longer viable. Obviously the wind blowing out at Wrigley is a factor but honestly, does anyone here believe, even if everyone returns, that we can compete for a playoff birth with the starters currently on the 40 man?

Outside of the Big 5( Tatis, Machado, Bogaerts, Merrill, Cronenworth) Sheets( we need a 1B/LH power hitter) France, King,  Morejon( who should all be resigned/kept beyond this year) and maybe guys like Morgan, Rodriguez, Estrada( young, controlled, upside), Preller, or whoever replaces him, need to see if they can get anything of value for everybody else( not sure there is much but worth a try)

Time to re-stock the minors, push guys who we think have a chance, and maybe we can be competitive again by 2028? That is of course FTJ and Merrill find their stroke and Machado, Bogaerts, and Cronenworth don't become albatrosses (less worried about Manny than the other 2)

Off Topic: anybody else getting tired of seeing these new garbage threads unrelated to baseball and the Padres posted by trolls? I don't know who the moderators are. But, is there anything you can do to prevent this?
