2026 Padre Season

MLB rules: What is the Restricted List?

The Restricted List is a sort of weird limbo where a player is technically still on the team but isn’t an active member of it. The purpose for placing a player on the Restricted List surrounds an unusual and unexcused absence from the team.

Here’s a brief list of reasons a player could be placed on the Restricted List:

  • Leave team without a valid reason
  • Is unavailable for non-baseball related reasons (legal trouble or a personal matter)
  • Announces intentions to retire but is still of an age or skill level where he could return

Once a player is placed on the Restricted List, his roster spot is made available for the team to fill with another player. The team also retains that player’s rights until further notice, and another team cannot swoop in and claim his rights like they would if he were DFA’d or placed on waivers.

However, if a team is interested in that player’s rights, a deal can be worked out where the team owing his rights is compensated.

Keep in mind that being placed on the restricted list is not a disciplinary action. That’s what the Disqualified List is for.

The player who was placed on the Restricted List can agree to come back to the team that originally had his rights when he was placed there. He can also return to a different team if a deal was already worked out.

Being placed on the restricted list shouldn’t be viewed as a way for a player to force his way out of a team, although it can be easily misinterpreted that way. Typically players placed on this list return to their original team and not immediately after a deal has been worked out sending them to a new one.

I suspect that Darvish's "retirement" is could be pending MLB and the MLBPA accepting terms of any buyout ... but not sure anything is in place yet.

At this point, Padres are not paying Darvish for 2026 but technically he is off the list after the season and then is owed again his money for 2027. Could be placed on the list for one more season (2027) ... but what will the new CBA allow? Given the good relationship between the Padres and Darvish would think Darvish is OK with this move while he is not committing to retirement, so no pay as he approaches this as he did the time he stepped away for "personal reasons".

Our rotation makes me very nervous. Pivetta is coming off by far the best year of his career. I think you have to expect at least some slight regression in his performance. King is returning from injury and 2024 is the only season he's made it through as a full time starter. How many innings can you expect from him? Musgrove is returning from an even more serious injury and recent developments aren't exactly encouraging. Again how many innings can you expect and how effective will he be? Buehler and Marquez both have not been healthy and effective for a full season since 2021. So, again how many innings and what kind of performance can you expect from them? Vasquez is actually growing on me. His stuff looked noticeably better this spring and it seems like Darvish has really taken him under his wing. I thought his performance last year was a little flukish, but he's growing on me.

The fact that the rest of the veterans in camp got beat out by Buehler and Marquez probably tells you all you need to know about them. Mendez and Gutierrez are probably the only prospects with a chance to contribute this year. I wouldn't expect to see either of them until the 2nd half though.

Fortunately our bullpen is good and deep. I just hope the starters can do enough to not totally wear it down.

Fair worry about the SP ... fear more things can go wrong than go right, especially for those #1-3 roles.

I remain confident that the Padres get some positive value out of Canning starting in about a month ... mid to lower part of the staff.

We will just ride it out until mid-season when maybe a deal can be made if needed. Only FA out there is Giolito but is he really any more reliable that who is in hand. Poor 2022, 2023, out for 2024 the an "good" but not great 2025. Not being signed by anyone might give a clue the opinion of other teams.

At this point in the season don't expect anyone to deal a "reliable" upper end SP ... not for the limited trade chips the Padres have. Likely will want to wait it out until multiple teams are interested raising the price.

Of course there is a legit chance the Padres can end up with a SP staff of Pivetta, King, Musgrove, Vasquez, Canning, with Buehler (swing) all with an ERA in the 3's based on their pasts.

It why we play the game.

Just saw this note/comment about Miguel Andujar ... in 2025 ...

xBA .261

xSA .377

The biggest difference in the majors in wOBA (.354)-xwOBA (.297).

Padres lost 2 of 3 but should have/could have won 2 of 3 with the uncharacteristic meltdown of Estrada.  Encouraged by the supporting cast of Laureano, Bogaerts, Fermin and Cronenworth.  Got some loud outs by Sheets and Castellanos, but Andujar and France are scuffling.  Campusano looked great defensively in game 2 but looked bad against a very good LHP; likely still will be better than our two catchers last year by the end of the year.

Pivetta should bounce back and looking forward to what Buehler and Marquez do against the Giants.  This is a series that we should win before going on the road.  Like what I saw of Hart so no rush to get Matsui back on the mound.  Marinaccio will have to show he belongs or could be DFA'd when Adam and/or Waldron are ready.

  • Padres right-hander Griffin Canning tossed three innings in a simulated game yesterday, per Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune, and will begin a rehab assignment on Saturday. Rehab assignments for pitchers can last as long as 30 days, so it seems Canning is trending towards a return in April or perhaps in early May. It was reported a few weeks ago that late April would be possible but that May or June would be more likely. Perhaps Canning is now on a path for the more optimistic end of that window.

Finally some signs of life from this team.

Need to go on a good run to get the positive vibes going.

Winning is contagious....unfortunately so is losing

The start has indeed been challenging Tarik Skubal and Framber Valdez are both capable of dominating, but they sometimes struggle to find consistency early in the season.
