2026 Padre Season

Manny is at 199 career HRs with the Pads! So, his next HR MM becomes the first Pad ever to hit 200 career HRs! Of course he is our All-Time HR leader, passing Nate Colbert on Sept. 10th of 2024.
Additionally, still waiting for Nado to start hitting HRs again! FTj is currently 6th all-time in HR for the Pads at 152. Next on the HR list is Dave Winfield at 154, Phil Nevin at 156, Adrian Gonzalez at 161 and Nate Colbert at 163. Once El Nino hits 12 HR this season, he will become 2nd on the Pads All-Time HR list. He has got to go on a HR tear soon, right?
Canning looked good in his first start for the Pads. Hopefully Giolito will also. Does that mean Marquez and Buehler are gone? Do we have enough pitching depth if both Buehler and Marquez chose free agency? Go Pads!

Looks like the Padres will play the IL game for now … Marquez to IL. Buys time. See nothing in the minors near ready.

Right now I have no idea who in the minors they can call up to help the offense. Don’t think song is really ready, but as poorly as Cronenworth is doing, might be worth the selection. Also think it’s time to just cut bait with Castellanos. He’s had 61 at bats this year with a 164 batting average 215 on base 279 slug that’s bad. Even recently past 15 days had 18 at bat 167 batting average 211 on base percentage and 389 slug not really better. Add that he’s a defensive liability just not worth taking up a roster slot.

We've got McCoy, Song and Wagner on the 40 man. Wagner just got back onto the field, so he probably isn't an option just yet. The non 40 man option I would like to see is Pablo Reyes. He's got a strong minor league track record, is defensively versatile and has at least handled lefties well in his big league time. They could also look at any of Jose Miranda, Samad Taylor, Nick Solak or Jase Bowen. They could free up the 40 man spot by transferring someone like Musgrove to the 60 day or DFAing a pitcher as guys return from injury. I don't think anyone is likely to make a major impact, but they can probably clear what Castellanos has provided.

On May 2nd, the Padres had played 32 games or roughly 20% of the season and their record was 19-13, a .594 winning percentage which is on pace for 96 wins. I'm confident that would qualify for the playoffs and is much better than an original projections before the start of the season. Fangraphs Zips projection was the high 80s to low 90s, while the Shredder predicted only 79 to 83 wins.
I have been impressed with Stammen and his managing so far. I like how he has been using the bullpen and the bench. If Canning and Giolito can pitch well and hopefully Pivetta and Musgrove return at some point, I'd feel a lot better about the starting pitching. I'm never confident when Buehler, Marquez or Waldron are starting. I like that Stammen & Nieabla used Rodriguez as an opener for Waldron on 5/6. It worked out well in SF, but is not like the GiAnts are an offensive juggernaut. Go Pads!

This year's start is one of the best in Pads history (prior to start of the St. Louis series):
2025 season, start 23-13, final record was 90-72.
2022 season, start 23-13, final record was 89-73.
1998 season, start 23-13, final record was 98-64 (best season team record all-time).
2010 season, start 22-14, final record was 90-72.
2026 season, start 22-14, final record To Be Determined.
Have to like our chances with similar starts throughout team history indicate, despite the hitting difficulties and starting pitching concerns. Go Pads!

Given how little production we have gotten from Tatis, Merrill and Manny offensively and the state of our rotation you have to feel pretty good about our record to this point. If we can get the big bats going and Musgrove and Pivetta can get healthy this team is going to be tough to beat.

Let's keep in mind that the Padres were 18-18 at this point in the 1984 season and went to the World Series.
