Remember teams can re-set the 26 man playoff roster (from the 40 man) between each playoff series.
So, if the first series is only 3 games max ... the decision may be only 3 SP and load the pen with experienced RP unless a lot of faith in a current SP coming out of the pen.
The other consideration is "match-ups" ... how the Padres' pitchers individually do against the Cubs line-up.
I guess if the RP will be used quickly to control the games and don't really want to burn them all early ... who among Cease, Darvish, Vasquez has the best chance to give the Padres at least 5 shutdown (or at least not blow up) innings. Are they better off with starter who is 50/50 going 5 shutout or give up 6 runs in the early innings vs a starter who is likely to go 5 innings and 2-3 runs?

But I can't see them not including the other 4 SP's.....

Quote from Jeremy Hill on September 24, 2025, 12:33 pmThey don't have to carry 13 pitchers. That's just the maximum. Lots of teams go unbalanced with 14 position players in the wildcard round. I think they probably carry the current position player group with McCoy swapped out for Wagner or Campusano. If Morgan's ready to go I think Rodriguez and Hart are probably the odd men out with 2 of the starters in the bullpen. Maybe 1 of them makes it if they leave a starter off to keep them fresh for the divisional round.

Quote from LynchMob on September 24, 2025, 4:05 pmI hope all Manny needs is some rest!
Maybe today will convince him of the value of that ...
If he doesn't want to rest "too much", he can spend time in the batting cage ...

Quote from fenn68 on September 24, 2025, 4:59 pmPadres outfielder Ramón Laureano has a fracture in the index finger of his right hand and will miss at least the first round of the playoffs. Manager Mike Shildt informed reporters, including Julian Del Gaudio of Fox 5 San Diego, after today’s game.
Also noted was some pessimism about him even being ready for the second playoff series.
Add the current unknown of Tatis' illness ... which appears more than just the flu. Padres could be down two key offensive cogs in a somewhat light offense.
I guess Sheets, O'Hearn, and Arraez become full time splitting LF/1B/DH without Laureano. All LHH with no good other option as a RHH unless they slide Iglesias into DH.
Padres are almost compelled to call up Campusano as a RHH and potential DH option. If Tatis is also out ... Sheets in LF / O'Hearn in RF / Arraez at 1B and juggle Iglesias, Johnson, and Campusano for the 9th hitter?
If this plays out this way ... Pivetta and King must pitch the games of their lives in the first series and the pen deliver.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 24, 2025, 8:18 pmDefinitely a big loss in Laureano being out. Very good defense, clutch bat, and good with team chemistry.
Good playoff teams overcome losses, bounce back boys.
