2025 Padres Season

PreviousPage 64 of 68Next

Is Merrill back tonight?

With roster expanding no need to make a corresponding move

Who else comes up….BP arm?

Bradgely maybe?

We need the Giants to stay close to the Mets so they will have everything to play for against the dodgers in those 7 games upcoming

If the Padres fail down the stretch ... might not focus on anyone but Machado. Over the past month ... batting in the critical #3 slot and with the most AB on the team ... plus theoretical super-star of the team ... stats:

175/220/301 (521 OPS) ... last 30 days

128/180/277 (457 OPS) ... last 15 days

080/115/240 (355 OPS) ... last 7 days

Bad and getting worse. If he was just hitting his "norm" and deliver some critical hits (he has had the chances) Padres would probably be leading the NL West. Padres are in crunch time but where is the super-star Machado?

Reading some of the recent reports on Manny and seeing some of his quotes I think he's just gassed. He's started every game to this point. He's started 133 games at 3B and 14 as the DH. He's always played a lot, but this is the heaviest workload he's had in a few seasons. He got a lot more DH time early last year. Acee has suggested that they want to get him at least a game off. Manny wants to be in there to fight for playoff positioning. I saw some talk that they might give him Sunday off to get him 2 days coupled with the off day on Monday.

Hopefully Manny can accept taking a game off ... that has always been hard for him ... remember not wanting to go on the IL yet could not play for over a week. Time off is just not in his DNA.

At 33 age is making it more difficult to play every day and keep up his performance ... just what time does to all of us.

Down the stretch have to balance the reality of Manny's performance, winning to be best positioned for the playoffs, and getting him (and actually others) properly rested to be strong in the playoffs. Tricky when in hot pursuit of the LAD for the NL West and home field advantage.  I guess at some point resting players may become more valuable than winning a game if the team is already  "locked" into a playoff slot.

Seems like management would be wise to sit down with their superstar( who's signed for another, what, 7 or 8 years?) and let him know this is a marathon, not a sprint. We'll need his O and D to be fresh come every fall for the foreseeable future. Whilst I realize Manny prides himself on being available every day, it's more important he be available for his teammates when they need him most.

I think the answer is to get a decent guy that can play 3b next year and beyond and let Manny DH more games.

Maybe every game before an off day so he has one day only hitting and the next day a scheduled day off.

Looks like Snell-zilla is rounding into form faster than usual. Dude has absolutely filthy stuff!

If he, Glasnow, and Yamomoto continue with this trend, they're going to be extremely difficult to beat.

Totally agree getting him multiple days off the field would be ideal. Doing that every time we have a break in the schedule should keep him somewhat fresh for October.

Going to be a real challenge for Preller to fill out the offense for next season considering (assuming) payroll limits coupled with few quality trade chips. Don't see anyone to rely on coming up internally.

Assuming they pick-up Laureano's option ... they still only will have eight ML hitters and will be searching for a ninth for a regular spot in the batting order. Plus need a lot for bench upgrades. Ideally, that ninth bat is versatile defensively allowing for some DH rotation during the season ... so, I guess, no 1B/DH type would be a priority.

Keeping in mind that Preller also has to deal with Cease, King, and Suarez being FA and the likely loss of Adam for the start of the season due to his injury. Should be interesting on "replacement" strategy and the decision on converting Miller (and/or maybe Morejon) to SP.

Would expect Preller to continue his strategy of picking up some end of career veterans ($3MM or less) like Iglesias, Solano, or D.Peralta and try to catch a last hurrah while accepting a part-time role. Hopefully not Heyward / Gurriel types. In Manny's case ... even if the rest him more ... would still expect him to start over 150 games at 3B ... so getting a sub that can play some 3B but is not necessarily a 3B (like an Iglesias) is probably the route to gain versatility with that sub.
