2025 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on July 16, 2025, 8:11 amI guess no hurry on LeMahieu's part on signing with a new team ... he gets his money for NYY anyway ... had the All-Star break to strategize ... and apparently multiple teams are interested so can get clarity on use / role / playoff chances for those teams to get himself into the best situation for him. He gets this year and next year funded by the NYY no matter ... new team just pays league minimum.
He would fit the Padre need for an upgrade bat and the lowest possible cost ... DH/1B plus 2B/3B in the pinch. Plus a real role in 2026 as Arraez may be let go (cost) opening up another need for a hitter. Really a "no risk" move by the Padres who could dump him at any time.
More expensive and less understanding even if he would return to play in 2025 ... is a late signing of J D Martinez (who reportedly is still working out in FLA). RHH DH ... and even last year which was down for him is much better than what the Padres are rolling out for the 9th bat. Cost may be the issue ... maybe a fallback if trades don't work out or LeMahieu is not signed.
Keep in mind that it does not take much to upgrade the 9th bat from: Brooks; Iglesias; Wade; Johnson ... but with limited money and trade chips ... LeMahieu or Martinez might make a lot of sense.

Suarez may be the closer BUT every team knows he will opt out after the season and will keep their offers low ... probably lower than Suarez' value to the Padres and help them in the playoffs even as a short term player. Plus would expect ... like Suarez as a Closer or not ... introducing a new inexperience closer is a risk since a surprising number of good set-up men struggle in the closer role.
Adam is controlled through next season (and will be cheap for an elite RP in 2026 through ARB) ... that profile would induce a team to give up a better player than for Suarez. If the Padres believe in the "others" in the system to cover the loss of both Suarez and Adam for 2026 ... maybe a better 2025 plan.
Agree on Estrada ... but at minimum and controlled for years ... should generate a good return but maybe not as good as Adam ...
In the short run greater use of Morgan (looking impressive in limited work) and Reynolds back could keep the pen strong while moving one of the to RP.
I realize Adam has more value….but I also don’t want to trade him.
😉

Quote from fenn68 on July 16, 2025, 2:58 pmDid see MLBTradeRumors postulate that the Padres might try to deal Cease (as the Tigers did with Flaherty last season) and still make the playoffs.
Padres would forgo a Comp Pick (Cease turns down a QO) but saves about $5MM for the remainder of the season and if the Padres need some payroll room to add a better upgrade for the offense ... might make sense if happy with King, Pivetta, Darvish, Vasquez, and Bergert (or Kolek).
Additionally they would get "something" for Cease ... probably as good or better than a Comp Pick in the 2026 draft. In a pennant race a contender needing SP will pay a bit more for upgrades ... even if it is mid-rotation with upside.
The follow up would be adding an upgrade (probably a rental using a mid range prospect) but with the benefit of taking salary should (could) actually get a player that has some 2025 impact.

I h0pe not. He has been a big part of the Padres success. Trading him would be a huge mistake.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 17, 2025, 8:57 amReading a bit on BOS needs as a potential playoff team, needing SP and possibly a 1B due to the injury of Casas. MLBTR suggested that Arraez could be a long shot as being available. I know that Arraez seems to be a clubhouse favorite, but so was Hosmer, so....?
Could a Cease, Arraez, prospect be a base for getting Duran? Duran goes to LF, Sheets goes to 1B, and with the money saved from both Cease and Arraez, sign JD Martinez for DH?

Probably not from BOST view. He is their lead-off hitter with 3 more years of control and they just get two "rentals" that cost more in 2025 then gone.
For 2025 trading Arraez for Duran does not do much for the offense ... maybe Duran is more productive but a hole still exists for the 9th bat. Plus the trade chip of Cease is gone. So net, probably not a good deal for the Padres trying to win in 2025.
Cease (as a rental and about $5MM for the remainder) will have trade value but not enough to gain a quality ML hitter. Boston is a good fit. Boston does have OF depth ... so maybe gamble for the future (and maybe 2025) and deal for J. Garcia ... 22 year old RHH OF in AAA currently ranked #98 on MLBPipeline's Top 100. Given the LF alternatives he may be an upgrade even in 2025.
I keep believing the Padres are not pushing the Cash payroll up so saving $5MM on Cease allows Preller to make a secondary move for a "rental" using a mid range prospect and take a $5MM pro-rated share of salary (meaning about a $15MM annual that suggest a decent player).
So Preller could be targeting a string of related moves to net an overall better roster. On the other hand, can't forget Preller liking to go big for impact players with multi-year control so, if someone like that is available, could see that using a group of top prospects (again).

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 17, 2025, 10:40 amCan't remember the last time AJ traded a veteran for a prospect.......
Garcia is intriguing though ....does K a lot though.
Then there's that first name......Jhostynxon
Preller does seem to have penchant for finding guys with strange names lately....lol
Also don't think AJ would like the optics of trading a guy like Cease for a guy in the minors.
Not that that should matter in any way....but casual fans would see that as "selling"...just not AJ's style.
Then again....he doesn't have the money to spend either

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 17, 2025, 11:35 amAs much as I would love Duran...or a guy like him (I love the fast athletic guys) we need power more than anything.
Guessing Preller thinks the same.
While any league average player in LF and at C would be an upgrade....I'm guessing he's gonna find someone that can hit the ball out of Petco on the regular.
Or I should say...."try" to find someone.
Obviously not an easy task with a limited budget and prospects that are still 2-3 years away.
If anyone can figure something out it's Preller.

Agree it is unlikely Preller deals Cease UNLESS he has another deal set at the same time that yields a ML hitter. Cease will be wanted by a contender and contenders are not giving up a quality ML player ... just as the Padres they want a better team by adding not just shuffling parts. A non-contender does not want a rental ... they want prospects.
In the ideal scenario ... a 3 way deal ... Cease to a contender for prospects that go to a non-contender for a quality ML hitter (not sure I see one on the market).
Even if he can create a 3 way deal ... still has to be comfortable the added hitter will provide more value than Cease in 2025. Clearly will not take much to upgrade that 9th hitter (that has value to the Padres) but at the same time losing Cease sets the Padres SP as: King (if healthy / effective on return ... whenever he returns); Pivetta; Darvish; Vasquez; Bergert; Kolek (if no King). Not compelling without King and that could be a bigger problem than getting a ML bat for Cease.
I dream for the big impact hitter while giving up little of value ... just a dream. I still am going with the scenario (given all Preller's limitations) that using mid-range prospects for decent "rental" hitters (maybe just "average" but that is really all that is needed for the bottom of the line-up).
Can use that same logic on the thought by some that the Padres should trade Suarez ... making that deal unlikely.
