2025 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 6:05 amTODAY: Gillaspie cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso earlier this week, the Padres announced. Gillaspie made the start for El Paso in yesterday’s game.
I am a bit surprised that no team claimed him give the poor state of RP across the leagues. He is minimum cost ... could be reasonably effective ... the only drawback (not a big one for some teams at this point) is he cannot be optioned.

Quote from Ryan OShea on July 5, 2025, 9:08 amIf I’m Cutch and I have a shot at a playoff run where I’m the everyday LF I’m begging the Pirates to trade me. But I do see that story where the Pirates are not making him available. Seems dumb to me, but the other option would be Bryan Reynolds, except he’s owed some decent money and would cost some decent prospect capital as well.

Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 9:19 amQuote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 2:14 amBart is possible but PITT has said they are not dealing McCutcheon ... he just is too much an icon in PITT who will retire as a Pirate so they will hold for the fans / organization. That is worth more than any return in a trade it seems.
Would add on Bart ... PITT made a very good deal with SF to get him using a low minor leaguer 8th round pick on no Top 30 lists. Bart was not performing well in SF but has improved a lot in PITT ... so should get a better return if traded than what they gave to get him.
Hitting better than either Diaz or Maldonado ... but a bit of caution that he really hits at Home in PITT but less so Away. He does hit LHP well, a real Padre need. Bart's defense is more like Diaz ... so not a great improvement there. Two other considerations for Preller ... Maldonado will retire at the end of the season and Diaz is on a $7MM mutual option (vs $2MM buyout) so could be gone. Bart is controlled via ARB (cheaply) for both 2026 and 2027 and with no clear C option yet for those years ... that profile fits the Padres longer term need. He would serve well even as the #2 catcher if a better #1 shows up.
So, Bart is an upgrade now (but still just a mid-level C) and provides some security at C for the next few year ... so a good target for Preller.
No idea what PITT would want (they don't have to deal him given low cost control) so likely a decent package of prospects but will not get any premium prospects is my guess.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 5, 2025, 2:37 pmMy new “hope” is a deal with the Marlins for Jesus Sanchez AND Edward Cabrera.
Would definitely not be cheap prospect wise…..but would really solve a couple holes going forward cheaply payroll wise.
Sanchez is good….not great…but we don’t need great to be much better in LF.
OF defense would be really good.
Cabrera has Cy Young potential IMO….elite bat missing stuff.
Sanchez controlled through ‘27 and Cabrera ‘28.
This allows us to let Cease and King go (although I’d still love to keep King) and save $ to replace Arraez or find a Catcher.
Darvish/Musgrove/Cabrera/Pivetta/Bergert/Vasquez/Kolek
Unless we can find a LF with good on base skills and speed that could lead off or hit 2nd if Arraez leaves.
Duran fits this bill but would probably cost as much in prospects as Cabrera himself and cost us more $ than both Marlin guys combined.
🤷🏻♂️
Edit:Duran fits this bill ”if” he adjusts to pitchers adjusting to him and hits his way out of whatever this is he’s in.

Quote from Ryan OShea on July 5, 2025, 3:14 pmHard disagree id rather keep our top prospects and the only thing im trading for is a LF or C and only cheap options. Nett is practically ML ready and new SPs always enjoy a good run when they’re first called up cuz nobody has seen them yet.
Not sure why we’d target Sanchez who is another lefty hitter who doesn’t hit lefties at all.
On Bart I don’t think his value has increased at all from the SF trade. He was a top prospect SF gave up on on and now he’s shown he certainly will never be the player he was expected to be. All he’s shown is he can get on base a bit

Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 4:05 pmWithout a deep set of prospects that are highly rated nationally and few really ML close to the ML ... would be difficult to out bid other teams interested in trading for top level talent. Also, given they are over the 2nd tier for CBT penalties ... probably do not want to add any signifiant contract in 2025 or going forward. Sort of why it seems most probably that Preller will be seeking serviceable rentals requiring little in prospect capital.
Also give the shortage of trade capital ... needs to focus on the the big holes (LF and RHH, C) and just sit the rest on the back burner.
As I said before Bart fits that profile for a position of need at a low cost for 2 additional years ... not great but way better than what is (and will be) in hand. Agree that Preller could get him without using any major prospect.
RHH and LF, again Laureano - Bader - Andjuar (on IL) - France (DH) all should be attainable with few trade chips and turn into a major 2025 upgrade.
Worry about 2026 this winter.

Quote from fenn68 on July 5, 2025, 4:27 pmI am shifting my desire on King from re-signing him to let him walk. He has been so effect before the injury his contract will end up for more years (5+ at age 31) and in excess of $25MM AAV. Too much of a cost commitment to a SP at that age given how pitchers get injured. Then add King did get injured. Reference Musgrove and Darvish. Put the long money in position players like Merrill (if making any long term deals).
Have to gamble (within a budget) and since it appears the Padres have a better shot in the near term (and long term) to create an effective pitching staff but are woefully shallow in position players ... let the pitchers walk and save the money then deploy the money saved on position players. Get a more balance roster.
If they just "tinker" at the trade deadline ... reshaping the roster will be the big thing this winter. At that point (be it FA or trade) could see the effort to get bigger upgrades for LF / C when more options may be available.
IF in the winter (not now) the Padres are "comfortable" for 2026 with Musgrove, Darvish, Vasquez, Kolek, Bergert with Baez and Nett sitting as the call-ups plus any low end FA SP they add ... would they consider trading Pivetta who would yield a big haul as an elite SP even with reasonable one year control (he has an opt out). Note his low 2025 salary / bonus around $4MM to a 2026 number around $20MM ... then it drops and he will opt out. That profile may not fit with the Padres IF they like the internal options and like the return in a deal. One off idea.

Quote from Ryan OShea on July 5, 2025, 8:35 pmCertainly like those ideas. I very much agree this year at the deadline the focus needs to be LF and C that need to be good against LHP.
I will say though, I believe if Darvish does come back this year it’s not for long and he ultimately retires at year end. Hope I’m wrong but can’t think of a Japanese pitcher who pitched into his late 30s effectively, I’m sure it’s better now but they wear those arms out in Japan

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2025, 5:58 amWe aren’t going deep into the playoffs this year…if we even make them, with Kolek,Vasquez,Bergert,Nett getting significant innings in the 2nd half….not with this offense.
You wanna wait till ‘26 to get a quality Starter?
Then we’ll be punting on 2025 and wasting another season of an aging Machado/Bogaerts.
They won’t be improving over the next 3-4 years.
Adding Bart & Laureano just isn’t enough…..not the way this team has performed for the last 45 days.
Its not like it’s just been a down week or two

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 6, 2025, 6:02 amWe haven’t even had a 3 game win streak in over a month.
Win 1,lose 2….win 2, lose 1.
Joey Bart and Ramon Laureano are going to fix that?
No way AJ leaves this entire season up to that.
