2025 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on June 16, 2025, 4:57 amSide on the Devers trade. Many think the player return is underwhelming for the level of Devers talent. Maybe so, but this may work out well for Boston.
- they do get rid of an 8 1/2 year (near $300MM) contract and that $31MM per year can be redeployed to a greater need ... pitching.
- Boston has all the offense they need for the future (both INF and OF) with some elite young talent and opens up AB for the future ... plus Casas (should be a DH not a 1B) returns next season after injury. Probably takes Duran off the trade market.
- (and not a small consideration) eliminates a "negative" on the roster ... Devers had become "it is all about me" player and opened up some friction with other players as well as the front office.
The key for them will be how they use the $30MM "saved" ... and next winter that should be enough to land a MAJOR SP (King? Cease? or whomever else is a FA). Keep in mind that their offense looks complete for the future and likely is not a target for upgrades.
I guess from my view ... Boston made a good deal for the team long run by ignoring the specific baseball stats of Devers.

no. missing the point that Boston does not want or need Bogaerts under a long term deal. they have an under performing SS (at $25MM for 3 more years) in Trevor Story. then add that they have Meyer ... one of the top SS prospects ready for the ML.
Plus why would Boston even want to trade LHH Duran after dealing LHH Devers go get a non hitting INF and a couple of one and done players.

Quote from fenn68 on June 17, 2025, 4:03 amSeems that Preller may have to make an earlier move to upgrade LF ... and that limits the teams willing to deal and arguably could cost more in prospects than waiting until late July.
As it stands maybe only 8 teams could be interested in deals (others may still see a chance at Wild Card spot) ... even those may think holding until July will get more bidders (and increase return they like).
I can see the 8 non-contenders at this point being: CWS; A's; BALT; COL; PITT; MIA; WASH: and ATL. Preller will need to use prospects since these teams don't need or want any short control / big dollar options.
Ideally a deal should be for a LF who hits LHP ... a "rental" should be a lesser cost but with nothing on the horizon for LF over the next few years Preller may consider a more expense / longer control option.
I will toss in a long shot ... Bryan Reynolds from PITT. Switch hitter, 30 years old, under a 5 year contract at about $15MM per year. Having a poor season (OPS .657) but in both 2023 an 2024 had an above average OPS around .790. He is not great but is above average historically on a fair contract plus Padres have nothing coming for LF for years (if at all). Actually Reynolds poor 2025 would still be an upgrade over the Padres' current options.
What would get PITT to deal Reynolds? First they are always financially strapped so deleting a 5 year / $15MM annual may appeal. Second, they are having a terrible season and a very large number of the current roster are FA after the season ... looks like a long time of "rebuilding" ... and that could move them to adding multiple quality prospects over holding on one player while losing.
He will not be cheap ... not sure the Padres have the trade chips to make PITT happy. Probably have to lead with Kolek or Bergert then dip into the Padres Top 10 to fill out the deal (likely a 3 or 4 for Reynolds).

I think Reynolds would be a nice option for a couple of reasons. One, as you mentioned SD really does not have an option for the long term in the OF, and then SD would have the OF locked up for years. Two, his defense is good enough to play RF, so having him in LF would provide SD with a pretty good OF defense all around with Reynolds, Merrill, and Tatis. Three, I think his numbers would improve in SD v. being in PITT since he would not have to be the "guy" in SD, just someone to keep the lineup moving.

IMO Boston loads up on controllable pitching at the deadline and/or this off season.
They have some great young bats that "should" only get better.
I bet they wish they still had Pivetta.

Quote from fenn68 on June 17, 2025, 2:35 pmTwo players to consider as LF upgrades from current non-contenders:
- Ramon Laureano (BALT) ... RHH / 30 years old ... $4MM contract with a club option at $6.5MM for 2026. Not playing full time but hitting 262/326/508 ... hits RHP well.
- Miguel Andjuar (A's) ... RHH / 30 years old ... $3MM contract and FA after season. Not playing full time but hitting 296/328/402 ... hits LHP well.
Both should be low cost in terms of trade pieces as part-time players and short control. Important since Padres don't have a ton of prospects to deal that teams will want. In 2025 Padres would only pick up about 1/2 of the salaries ($3.5MM) so not a big financial hit.
Considering the LF production in SD either would be a massive upgrade ... would not object to adding both creating some mix and match options in LF and with Sheets at DH (who still struggles with LHP).

Quote from ultratvfan on June 17, 2025, 11:19 pmAJP could have gotten C Austin Wynns on the waiver. He hits better and runs faster than Diaz and Maldonado and quicker on the release than they are. But, he passed him up and the A's claimed him for mere cash considerations. The A's got a good deal.
AJP needs to step it up. I still like Stowers for LF.

So why did CINN put him on waivers and why did not other team claim him and out bid the A's? Not as though other teams don't need an upgrade at C.

Quote from fenn68 on June 18, 2025, 5:35 amGillaspie has been sent to ACL to start a rehab.
With the 40 man roster full ... and Darvish and Hoeing (nearing the end of rehab) at some point coming off the 60 day IL ... probably can't use Gillaspie to the 60 day for any long term opening.
Some 40 man changes may be near.
