2025 Padres Season

Add that in 2025 Padre
Catching ranks 28th in wRC+ and 29th WAR.
LF ranks 29th in wRC+ and 29th in WAR.
Then a hole to fill after they let Arraez go. That is three positions setting up to be near the bottom of MLB ... and that will not work if the Padres want to contend in 2026. Don't need an above average upgrade ... just try to upgrade to near "average" in those three slots ... easier said than done given availability ... cost in pay or trade chips.
To note ... Padres SS is at 18th in wRC+ and 19th in WAR ... not great but functional and getting an upgrade there in a trade or FA is unlikely. More likely an offensive upgrade (much needed) can be achieved by adding a 1B/DH (needed) at a lower acquisition cost.

Just to build on the Padres need to boost offense as the first priority ...
the average OPS in the NL is .710 ...
in the last 30 days the only Padre over .700 is Machado ... everyone else is WAY UNDER with Tatis and Merrill sub-.600 in around 100 AB.
As much as they need to add offense players the really need to get that slumping main roster pieces to perform.

Jacob Hurtubise was DFAd by The Reds. He had crazy numbers in the upper minors back in 2023. He got on base at a .500 clip against right handed pitching between AA and AAA while stealing 45 bases. His numbers have dropped off considerably since then and he's struggled in limited big league opportunities. Given our LF situation he could be worth a claim. He still has options left too.

Might be worth a claim ... would have to drop someone from the 40 man and some marginal candidates would be Marinaccio, McCoy, or even Ornelas. Not going to drop a MLer for a gamble on a struggling MiLer. I guess Gillaspie could move the the 60 day IL ... but they will need a spot for Hoeing when he comes off the 60 day IL.

I don't like his numbers in the majors. He is hitting .084 avg. Stowers is the better way to go.

By my count we only have 39 guys on the 40 at the moment. Darvish could also go on the 60 day without any consequences. As you pointed out there are a few other guys we wouldn't miss. It shouldn't be an issue if they want to make a move.

Right ... missed that they activated Waldron off the 60 day a couple of weeks ago. Would seem that slot is to cover Hoeing coming off the 60 day ... soon.
Probably the first move ... if needed ... is Gillaspie to the 60 day.

Preller (for a major deal) will likely have to use SP/RP ... so, a critical path factor is the health / return of Darvish and King (and to a lesser degree Hoeing / Waldron) but recent reports don't suggest that is imminent. Plus they need to come back and be effective for a playoff run. Preller will likely need to see some success out of the injured before any major move.
Note that the current starting 5: Pivetta; Cease; Vasquez; Kolek; and Bergert has been effective. Tough call as to who gets optioned to accommodate Darvish and King. Plus would not trade until I was sure Darvish and King are back in top form. Given the pace of their return estimate ... maybe early July (All-Star break?) ... sort of pushes any major deal using SP off to the 2nd half of July. Might see lesser deals using RP or prospects.
A lot depends on the returns but on one hand to win in 2025 the potentially best / most reliable SP are King - Pivetta - Cease - maybe Darvish then consider Darvish is no-trade and King / Cease will be FA (usually not generating great returns as rentals). Then on the other side if also looking ahead to 2026 (and payrolls) would not want to deal Vasquez, Kolek, or Bergert with long control and low cost ... plus none of them have the long track record to generate a major return.
Not sure of any major LF/DH upgrades on the market ... so that is an issue and may shift Preller to using prospects / RP to make useful upgrades (maybe short term) by default. Not too many teams are out of Wild Card races yet so less likely to move ML talent for anything less than greater ML talent ... for now.
