Whitley is out of options. Which pitcher would you take off of the major league roster to fit him in? I wouldn't take him over any of them. If he clears waivers and you could get him on a minor league deal sure. I don't think that's very likely though. No way they trade Campy for him.

I did forget that he was out of options, still Im not a fan of Campusano's ability to hit ML hitting. So I would like to recoup something for him

For 2025 Campusano is insurance in case Diaz or Maldonado gets injured  … not going to find a good catcher mid season at a moment’s notice.

Same over the winter when both Diaz and Maldonado can be FA.

More valuable as insurance than a trade chip.

I would like to see Campusano get a shot with consistent ABs before they give up on him. It's kind of tough with the current roster. It's clear they don't really believe in him behind the plate anymore. They obviously don't really want to put Sheets in LF regularly to free up DH ABs either. We're getting so little offensively from C/LF that I think they have to at least consider changing things up to get some more production though. I've seen Campy working at 1B before games. Maybe they can pair him up with 1 starter behind the plate and let him get some looks at 1B/DH too. Give him a couple weeks of consistent ABs and see if he can find his rhythm at the plate.

Mason McCoy reinstated and optioned to Triple-A El Paso.

This!

Campusano, like any other ballplayer, needs to actually play ball to see what he's capable of. How many major league AB's does he have so far this year? 20?

C'mon.....give him 2 to 3 weeks of 3/4 AB's every day. If he's still hitless, then yeah, throw him on the trash heap.

But Luis has always been okay at the dish. Give him some confidence, make him feel like he's in the line up every day, regardless of 0'fers.

What's the alternative? Watching Wade and Lockridge scuffle to hit .200 with ZERO power? And Diaz and Maldinado?

We've got a month before break. Let's see what we got. If nothing, then AJ needs MAJOR upgrades to the roster.

Shaping up to be a tense season with LA, SF, and SD all currently tied in the loss column (28) and all three in playoff slots.

Is this the beginning of the end for Bogaerts as a SS? As Jeremy pointed out, he's having a difficult time transitioning the ball, which is not something you can have from an MLB SS.

Obviously, getting rid of Bogaerts would be the ideal but since that is likely not going to happen the next 8 years, where does the organization put him????

Jeremy also mentioned Bogaerts's range seems okay. With a 6 foot 2 inch frame, would he not be a decent candidate to move to 1B? A move to 2B, he'd still have to make that glove to hand transition. Plus, Cronenworth is the superior defender at 2B so unless we plan on moving Jake, I don't want him back at 1B.

That said, Arraez's only position defensively is 1B. Do we resign Luis to be employed as our DH for the foreseeable future? As much as I like him, unless he's hitting. 330 or better, he's tough to plug in as a 1B or DH with his lack of extra base power. Plus, with the albatross of 8 years left of Bogaerts, I'm just not seeing Arraez coming back( which leads to the question of " do we move Arraez" before he walks for nothing?)

We're already average, or below average, at 1B and SS, both defensively and offensively. By trading Arraez, and moving Bogaerts to 1B( and finding an MLB quality glove at SS), are we at least better defensively ?

Big decisions to be made before the deadline.....and going into the off season.

The Padres reinstated LHP Jay Groome from the ineligible list and non-tendered him making him a free agent,

My guess is that Bogaerts moves to 1B as soon as DeVries is ready for SS. And in reality, Bogaerts does not have the power a team usually wants from a 1B.

So once again, an out of place bat in a position that is traditionally a power spot.....same as LF.

Eventually you need to draft some power bats, that actually make it to the MLs.

Agree that Bogaerts remains at SS until DeVries arrives (if he arrives). Maybe not the optimum choice but he is OK while the Padres have to look at dealing with higher priorities and sort through alternatives (who is better and at what cost). Padres have limited quality trade chips and limits on expanding payroll.

For 2026 top priorities should be:

  1. Catcher ... Maldonado is a FA; Diaz is on a mutual option (rarely exercised); and Campusano (not desirable choice of #1); Salas (if develops) is two years out after missing most of 2025) ... then ????. Need at least two competent ML quality catchers ... not easy to find ...
  2. LF ... someone who can provide more offense with at this point returning Lockridge, Wade, Ornelas ... preferable a RHH to balance a LHH biased line-up. I would not put Sheets in LF.
  3. 1B/DH ... depends on where they drop Sheets. Good chance they do not re-sign Arraez ... hard to justify a major longer term deal with his poor career history of hitting at PETCO and surprisingly his away from PETCO production has really dropped. With only BA as a calling card ... basically below average overall offense.

Focus needs to be there before worrying about moving Bogaerts (or Cronenworth) ... SP may be addressed in the second tier with signs (if any) like Preller did with Lugo, Wacha, Pivetta (short term deals / middling salary) if at all.
