2025 Padres Season

PreviousPage 32 of 68Next

Matt Waldron made his first rehab appearance yesterday in ACL. He now joins Darvish and Hoeing in the rehab protocol. That puts three former ML arms within weeks of being activated ... somewhere. Waldron and Hoeing can be optioned.

Going to be a challenging deployment by Preller ... with Vasquez / Kolek going well not sure who out of all the options ends up in AAA vs SD ... I guess Reynolds and Jacob could be optioned IF the Padres prefer Hoeing and Waldron in the ML. Does set up a pretty robust group for spot call-up and optioning. Darvish will be up so one option is already at issue.

Note that both Waldron and Hoeing are on the 60 day IL but the 40 man currently is sitting at 38 ... so no roster issue in activating them and will just fill the 40 man.

Hoeing was outstanding last season. I would think that Reynolds would be optioned to make room for Hoeing and there is no room for Waldron, so I think he would be optioned to El Paso.

Sounds right to me. Outside chance Jacob could go vs Reynolds depending how each shows in the next couple of weeks. Jacob has been used as an early inning RP to go multiple innings and that is a similar profile to Hoeing.

If on his game, Reynolds can come in as set-up with strikeout potential and maybe be less "hittable" than Jacob ... issue with men on base.

Not sure the future of Waldron. His history shows he is very bad in his first inning of a game ... is "good" in innings 2-4 then fades in inning 5.

Those 1st inning problems does not suggest he is a RP candidate and with the knuckleball always a risk of wild pitch / pass ball not a great choice to come in with men on base. Even if King and Cease depart after 2025, Waldron probably falls behind Musgrove - Darvish - Pivetta - Vasquez - Kolek and maybe Bergert - Hart - Baez. Trade chip?

Just an observation on Machado early in the season ... #3 hitter who we would like to see some impact from.

So far, the good (157 AB) is that he has an .879 OPS and scored 32 runs. However, he has only produced 3 HR / 20 RBI ... not ideal for a #3 hitter. This crossed my mind yesterday when he had a couple of opportunities to drive in runs when it may have changed the course of the game.

For reference the much maligned Bogaerts (147 AB) also only has 3 HR / 20 RBI.

Both are middle of the order hitters who should be driving in runs ... especially with Tatis / Arraez ahead of them ... maybe some concern. On the other hand, if the Padres can have one of the best records in MLB without the expected productivity from Machado / Bogaerts ... think of the success the Padres should see over the remaining 3/4 of the season when they to hit their stride and start hitting HR and driving in runs!

With the release of Gonzalez, SD could use some additional OF help. Our old friend Garrett Cooper has just been released by ATL. Wonder if he would consider coming back to SD?

At this point he would consider any team that makes him an offer ... getting up in age and this season just bad in AAA ... but maybe a minor league deal to see if he has any life left.

Beating a dead horse here but to highlight how desperate the Padres are for a LF upgrade (if they want to be a contender):

Last 30 days the LF for SD has produced: 177/228/239 that translates to a 33 wRC+ last in the ML. However, defensively per dWAR they are 4th best.

A breakdown of the players with wRC+ / dWAR for the season in LF:

126 / 0.2 ... Lockridge

54 / 0.0 ... Heyward

22 / 0.5 ... Gonzalez (gone)

-20 / -0.1 .. Ornelas

-42 / -1.1 .. Sheets

-100 / -0.2 . Iglesias

-100 / 0.0 ...Joe (gone)

Note that Lockridge is a lesser 64 wRC+ overall considering his time in CF/DH ... so not really salvation.

Is there anyone available now (or soon) from another team (at a fair price tag)  or does Preller have to wait until nearer the trade deadline? Can the Padres survive with a LF rotation of Heyward - Lockridge - Sheets? How does a call-up of Campusano effect the mix by likely sending Sheets to LF more often as Campy DH.

BALT has totally collapsed in 2025 (second worst record in AL) ... fired manager ... have a massive number of veterans becoming FA (or on club options) after the season ... so logically should be open for business in moving some of their veterans for some low cost prospects.

One FA to be is their LF Ramon Laureano ... RHH hitting 146 wRC+ with plus defense in 2025. More realistically he is an average hitter (about wRC+ at 100) but that would still be a massive upgrade in LF. He is 30 and a FA after the season while only on a $4MM contract (so Padres would be picking up just under $3MM for the remainder of the season).

Should be available and not super expensive in terms of a player return given he is only a "rental". Orioles probably would focus on pitching in return ... prospects that a low cost / long control.

Side: CF Mullins is also a FA to be but he would be much more expensive (current salary and level of return) with BALT holding out to max return nearer the trade deadline (should be more demand for other teams). Some talk they would QO him for the draft pick (probably a bit smoke to push up the price). LHH.

IMO we need to make a trade pronto.

Bring a guy in that can play everyday with decent glove and bat.

Doesn't have to be an all star....a guy like Mullins or Ward would be fine.

Meanwhile,I'd prefer just putting Lockridge out there every day and bat him 9th.

I would prefer we don't wait until the trade deadline if we have a choice.

We could drop an extra game or two wile waiting and 1-2 wins could be huge when al said and done.Plus the competition for players would be greater.

Of course the other team has to be willing to not wait....which would mean more costly....still think we need to get it done.

Use guys like Tirso/Lowe/Bergert/Lizarraga etc as bait.

Ward or Mullins shouldn't cost too much...Ward has one more year of Arb but for what he will get that may be to our advantage...doubt LAA wasn't to pay it.

They have a speedy OF about to break in next season anyway
