2025 Padres Season

My guess is we let Arraez and Cease go and sign King long term.

Can’t keep all three…..Doubt we can keep two so this makes most sense.

Find a 1B in FA or via trade that can play every day.

Hopefully Yu and Joe are both healthy and ready March ‘26

King/Musgrove/Darvish/Pivetta/Vasquez

Should have multiple internal options for #6-#8 SP…maybe a couple that push Vasquez to BP

Kolek and Hart (Padres have cheap option on Hart) could put pressure on Vasquez in 2026 if the others return. Still early in 2025 but Bergert is a legit prospect starting off well in EP. Plus some AA guys after a full season in 2025 might be on the cusp (Nett, Lizarraga, Baez). A #5-6-7 does not have to have that blue chip (may a consistent 4.5 ERA).

__________

Sheets(L) and Joe will be back ... maybe that is a 1B platoon (would be very cheap since both under ARB) and the target spending on a LF ... or catcher.

Preller will have options depending on who is available.

Cruz optioned to EP

Cosgrove DFA

Gillaspie added to roster and called up

Missed my first Padre innings last night.

These 10:10 games are for the Birds....or the youngsters anyway.

9:40 plus the new rules has made these late games bearable....10:10 is different.

Anyone have an idea why the Padres keep going with Gurriel RHH DH and PH vs Iglesias? Gurriel has not hit well this season or the last couple while Iglesias (albeit with power) at least hit for average in 2024.

Hard to be too critical while the team is winning but?

Maybe just a full test of Gurriel before releasing him and calling up Joe or Gonzales?

From what I've read Gurriel worked out at the same gym as Manny in the off-season and came with his recommendation. He reportedly worked hard to get in better shape and get some of his bat speed back. He's also supposed to be very respected around the league. It seems all of that added up to get us to give him a shot and they decided to roster him after he had a solid spring.

Given that he's 40 years old and has been a similarly poor hitter the last 3 years I'm surprised that was enough. I would also much rather see his roster spot go to Joe and his ABs go to Joe/Iglesias. Shildt prefers veterans on the bench and must have seen something he liked. Gurriel has only gotten 15 PAs. I think they'll give him a little more run, but if he doesn't hit I don't think he'll be around long.

How about this idea:

We trade LF Jason Heyword and 1B Yuli Gurriel and bring up LF Tirso Ornelas and 1B Trenton Brooks. But, who can we get for Hayword and Gurriel for? Maybe we can trade them and Hart to the Marlins for Snelling plus any other player(s).

Given the issue the Padres have with LHP ... might not want to call-up Brooks (L) or Ornelas (L) if they released Heyward (L) and Gurriel.

Might opt to go with two RHH .. Joe and Gonzales. Plus Joe has a fair amount of ML experience and Gonzales has been in the ML.

Given the way the old guys Heyward / Gurriel have looked ... 2 more weeks?

Also, although I am "hopeful" on Lockridge ... I suspect he will settle into a 4th OF (defense/ PR) and the Padres could use a regular LF (Joe or Gonzales) with a bit more offense while the other platoons with Sheets at DH.

Essentially take the LHH in the line up down to four (Arraez, Merrill, Sheets, and Cronenworth) vs RHP ... and with the rest of the line-up that should be fine ... projecting either Gonzales or Joe can hit RHP better than Heyward or Lockridge in LF. Then vs LHP, Joe and Gonzales in should be better than Lockridge and Gurriel.

Unfortunately no one would give even a PTBNL for either….or both for that matter.

Gurriel will be DFA’d soon for Joe…..Heyward not long after for Tirso.

I think everyone but those two are ready for it to happen now
