We can't....can we?
Is it a foregone conclusion Murakami is a dodger?
Tbe Duds are the #1 team in Japan, even more so than any team in the NPB.
With more Japanese players, Hollywood, year round sunshine, and absolutely unlimited funds( do they ever pay fines like we have to?), I would think any Japanese player coming across would put LA as #1 on their wish list.

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 7, 2025, 2:38 pmWith Muncy, Freeman and Ohtani in place I don't think the Dodgers will go after Murakami. I guess he could come off the bench for a year and replace Muncy next season, but with the contract projections being thrown around for him I doubt even the Dodgers would do that. I'm more concerned with the thought of them signing Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette.

Quote from WindsorUK on November 7, 2025, 2:47 pmYeah, I've read the Duds might be in on Tucker.
Would be typical.
Until MLB implements a salary cap, we're going to have a tough time winning the division. LA is the ultimate destination for any free agent- stacked rosters, perennial title contenders, year round sun/heat, starlets. What young guy says no to that???

Quote from Jeremy Hill on November 7, 2025, 4:49 pmI would be nervous about signing Murakami. He has ridiculous power potential. I just don't know if he'll be able to make enough contact to capitalize on it in the big leagues. He doesn't have much else to bank on. I think there's a chance he's like the good version of Chris Davis. I also think there's a chance he's like the bad version of Chris Davis. With projections putting him in the 200m range I'm not sure I would want to take the risk.

Agreed, we do not need another huge contract. Preller is going to have to bargain hunt again for SP and 1B/DH plus bench help. Go Pads!

Quote from fenn68 on November 8, 2025, 10:30 amWould not be surprised to see a lot of creative 1 year deals with options across the league for all but the stars commanding big deals.
For both the player and the team the uncertainty of a 2027 season (no pay during lockout) for how long and then the rules under the new CBA alters everyone’s thinking.
Would think 2 year deals will be hard to construct.
Also some of the non contenders may not want to spend in 2026 and create a strike fund … even some contenders might just minimize … reducing demand and putting pressure on players for lower 1 year deals.
Could be a lot of FA still around as ST starts.

After checking his strike out/contact numbers, I’ve changed my mind

Quote from Randy Manese on November 9, 2025, 12:35 pmFangraphs has the Padres current AAV (or CBT) to be approximately 10M under the 1st tier of 244M. This is including estimates for arbitration eligible players, other 40 man obligations and any other league or team obligations that would be part of the CBT; this does not include potential acceptance of QO by King or signing any free agent. COTs's Contracts for the 2026 season estimates that the Padres are approximately 16M under the 244M first tier. If we split the difference and say 13M to stay under the 1st tier it is going to be impossible to be competitive and get into the playoffs again with the questions we have with our rotation, 9th hitter in the line-up and bench depth.
Unless we can free up some existing salary obligations by trade/DFA, we are going to have to get a commitment from upper management to get us past the 1st tier and close to the second, pretty much like this year. Even with that, Preller is gong to have to be very creative in his negotiations and our core players will have to have ironman health to perform at a consistently high level. Seems like the early part of the schedule favors the Padres so let's hope we make the most of that before the tough months of August and September hit us. Good luck to Preller to keep the team competitive - it sure looks like a challenge this year, especially if King goes elsewhere.
