Losing Darvish hurts. AJP needs to re-sign King. Also, Imanaga just became a free agent. He could be a perfect fit for the Padres. But, he might be too expensive.

After as good as the Padres have treated Yu since he got here, no way he screws us over by sticking around.

If he does, Padres are Hosmer hamstrung again.

I think we were fooling ourselves to think he would just retire and give up all those millions.

Plus I'm thinking the MLBPA would have something to say about that

Yu is really putting the team in a tough spot. He's not pitched much the past 2 years, won't pitch at all next year, and then expects to come back, in his age 41 season, having not pitched much for over 3 years? I imagine he would then expect the team to plug him into the rotation????

Dude had any integrity, he'd retire. He's already earned a quater of a billion dollars, and is the most successful Japanese pitcher in MLB history. I get walking away from that cash is nuts but he must know the Pads will move on from him?

Besides extending Qualifying Offers, the only other action pending by the Padres before the Thursday deadline is exercising the club option on Ramon Laureano.  Should be a no brainer so just wondering why they would wait until the last minute to do it.  Maybe they are trying to work out an extension?  Anyway, it would be an absolute shock if Laureano is not our starting LF in 2026.

King and Cease get QO's, the rest do not.  For a long time, I thought King would accept it but now I'm thinking that he also is going to decline making the Padres rotation in need of a major influx of talent.  Maybe both Miller and Morejon are moved to rotation along with Sears, Hoeing and Waldron and anyone else in the system (Mendez, Wolf, Haynes?) that is healthy enough to be half-way competitive at the ML level.  It doesn't matter if you have the makings of a great bullpen if your SPs give up 3-4 runs early and/or can't make it out of the 2nd or 3rd inning.  We do have some depth at RP  in the minors and RP are typically easier to land than SP.

Preller has a lot of work to do in the off-season,  especially since we don't have much trade capital in either the majors or minors.  Pitchers, however, are highly unpredictable.  Besides proclivity for injury, simply adding or subtracting a pitch or making a minor adjustment to a pitcher's delivery can turn a subpar performer into an effective SP (or RP).  We have the coaching staff to do it - we just need to land the right guys at a creative/reasonable price.  Luckily, there are dozens of pitchers who are probably in our price range that might deserve consideration.  Let the hunt begin!  This is the kind of challenge that Preller lives for so wishing him all the success because we really need him to come through for a competitive 2026 season.

I did see a blurb on CBS where they suggested that SD trade Pivetta. He is jumping up in salary from $1.75M to $19.75M, an increase of $18M. Could they not get two SP in the #3 range for $9M per year versus a guy that had a career year in 2025 for an extra $18M?

I think in that same article they suggested a trade with the Mets for Pivetta.

So with also needing another C, could Preller work a 3 team deal. SD send Pivetta to NYM, NYM sends players to MIN, and SD gets SP Joe Ryan and C Ryan Jeffers. Ryan is arb eligible for the last year and made $3M last season. Jeffers is in the same spot and made $4.55 last season. So both would probably combine for $11M?

Jeffers and Fermin could split C duties and along with Campusano be the RHH DH option.

Even if Shildt hadn't retired, there was talk that Victor Rodriguez would be hard pressed to hang on to his Hitting Coach job with the Padres.  Hard to blame the hitting coach for the lack of execution by Padres batters during the 2024 playoffs against the Dodgers or the many many games the Padres looked like a team of minor leaguers struggling to get 5 hits and 2 runs in a game - even against less than top-level pitchers.

I'm guessing the Padres hire Pujols as their Manager and he brings in someone who is very well respected as a hitting coach.  See the Padres booming much more HRs in 2026 although their BA and K% may increase; however if that results in more runs per game, then it will be an acceptable tradeoff.  Predict a new Manager before this weekend is over.

Pivetta had been predicted for a break-out season for at least the last 3 years, so is this the start of a run of pitching at this new level or just a one-off?  Pivetta's value is probably at its all-time high, so it really depends on how Preller values him going forward.  I'm guessing that trading  him is going to be a legitimate consideration but not until some of the top arms go off the board.

The other concern I have for the line-up is Sheets, who also had his career year.  Does he revert back to his norm or has he made sufficient progress as a hitter that he can at least maintain his 2025 production?  For this reason, looking for another dependable bat in the line-up also has to rank high as a Preller priority.

Laureano was having a solid year up until the hand injury. Will he be that same guy next year?

Definitely bring him back for next year. As for extending him, with our complete lack of depth in the minors, maybe it is worth looking to keep Ramon for another 3-4 years, especially if the price is right.

He has power, speed, and brings the glove- not a bad guy to invest in.

If they trade Pivetta odds are they miss the playoffs with no SP. Not getting a top of the rotation arm back plus. Right now they NEED some more quality SP to add to Pivetta. If they do trade him … likely for a player(s) with long control and low cost.

doubt they extend Laureano … yes pick up option … need to spend available money on SP … that is expensive to cover 5 slots effectively.

With Cease gone and possibly King, too, and Darvish out for 2026, Musgrove and Pivetta will be our two top pitchers along with Vasquez. IMO, trading Pivetta is not a smart move. He must be kept and King re-signed.

Thoughts on Imanaga as a Padre, who is a FA?
