2024 Padres Season
Quote from fenn68 on April 1, 2024, 4:46 pmListening to a couple of sport talk head on the radio concerning Pauley being with the club … covered about every possible angle but they did add a few point to consider.
1. Pauley being on the 26 man now is not costing him playing time in the minors … he would likely be sent to AA (as were Marsee and the other real prospects) and they do not start the season until Friday.
2. Being with the ML club is getting him acclimated to the ML environment / team so if (when) he gets optioned his recall should be smoother in the ML transition.
3. (Actually like this one) … Pauley and Merrill are really close from the minor league time and maybe having Pauley around for the first few weeks of the season makes it easier for Merrill to settle in at the ML level.
Pauley is starting at 3B again tonight. Not a clear path to the next move but if he gets hot … he may last until Manny returns to 3B or Pauley becomes the #1 DH. If struggles Padres may option him go back to Wade/Rosario and call up a non-roster type like Mitchell for the bench.
Given the current roster … if Pauley gets the chance and is hot we may not see him optioned as he morphs into the primary DH role. Not as though the Padres have anyone poised to push him out sitting in AAA.

Today, the @Padres acquired LHP Jackson Wolf from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for INF Kervin Pichardo, and the club optioned Wolf to Triple-A El Paso.

Pichardo is not much of a prospect … and since the Padres gave up Wolf for Rich Hill and Ji-Man Choi … sort of a net zero impact on the organization except for the disaster that was Hill - Choi at the end on 2023.

Quote from BoosterSD on April 4, 2024, 11:03 amReading that Perez for MIA is out for the season with TJ surgery. MIA has yet to win a game and is no longer as deep as they used to be in pitching. I think we all have seen where Preller tried to get Luzardo and/or Arraez or both this offseason. I dont think we can lose the prospects to get Luzardo, but does Preller still have interest in Arraez? Although off to a slow start, he is still high BA/OPB guy from the left side.
Two potential issues, one his salary ($10M±) and two where to play him. He is controlled via arb through 2025.
Could he be the DH when Machado returns to 3B? Or, could Crone handle a midseason change to LF, and play Arraez at 1B?

Quote from Randy Manese on April 4, 2024, 12:27 pmMarlins traded away All-star pitcher Pablo Lopez plus two minor leaguers for Arraez last year and Arraez is only in his mid-20's. Don't think we'd give up any of our top hitting prospects (Salas or DeVries) plus one of our top pitching prospects (Snelling or Lesko) for a guy who doesn't really have a defensive home. We don't seem to be a match, particularly because Arraez is likely a couple of notches down on the defensive end compared to our current infield talent. Putting us over the CBT for a guy to play LF/DH doesn't seem to be the way the Padres are going. I'd vote no to that kind of deal.
I think the Padres like the energy the young guys have brought to the team and are investing more in their development than making a trade. Marsee, with his high OBP, might be a similar player but we'll have to see how he does in AA this year.

Quote from fenn68 on April 4, 2024, 4:28 pmArraez … at this point … would be a tough fit but Preller does like who he likes.
IF the Padres are in contention at the trade deadline (and his bat is the highest priority need) might see a deal for him as DH. At that point his hit on 2024 AAV would be around $4MM … and that fits under the CBT. With only 2 months and 2025 control along with MIA likely interested in shedding his 2025 arb hit … might not be to costly in terms of prospects.
No idea what the pulls down in 2025 via ARB but probably less than Kim would get in a new contract (AAV). IF (and think a good chance of this) the Padres do not want another big money long term deal … Kim may depart via FA setting up some INF shuffling for 2025.
Option 1: INF of Arraez - Cronenworth - Bogaerts - Machado … Pauley DH / Merrill CF / Marsee LF
Option 2: INF of Cronenworth - Bogaerts - Merrill - Machado … Arraez DH / Marsee CF / Pauley LF
Remember Arraez is a poor defender even at 1B … and we never embraced Bogaerts as a SS so Merrill to his natural SS position makes sense (consider the LAD movement of Betts) and Marsee seems a legit option for CF.
I guess a scenario to stay under the CBT in 2025 would be to trade for Arraez at the deadline and IF they re-sign Kim trade Arraez next winter (with only one year control). Don’t see any ability to trade other players to clear enough CBT space for both to co-exist and might not want to do that if Arraez is a FA in 2026 and will command a big money long term deal going forward.
Not expecting any of those scenarios … more like a trade deadline move for an impact SP.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 5, 2024, 8:31 amLike the reacquisition of Wolf. Saw him pitch one of his best game in San Antonio in late April last year. Not a lot of velocity but very deceptive. Will give up the occasional long ball but still manages to get enough swing and miss to limit the damage. El Paso, however, is brutal on pitchers so we'll see how he does there.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 10, 2024, 11:22 amGranted, I haven't checked the rest of the teams in MLB. I did though check our run production in the 11 games we didn't score 9,13,15( 3 of 14 games)
We've scored 33 runs in 11 games, which is an average of 3 runs per game.
Currently, the Sacramento....er...Oakland A's are 28th in MLB at 3 runs per game.
I'm fairly certain they are the lowest paid team in baseball, and we are about average, salary wise.
I know it's too early to panic but this is looking like a repeat from last years debacle.
I'm a HUGE proponent of lineup structure and I'm deeply entrenched in the camp that our lineup is not as productive as it should be. Obviously, there's a large amount of money being spent on analytics and staff to figure out who should be hitting where but it appears to be money and resources poorly spent. There's no way this group should be this unproductive for such long periods of time.

Quote from BoosterSD on April 10, 2024, 11:49 amI think you are right, and the line up order will change in about 25-30 days. I think they are still trying to figure out what they have in Merrill, and how Pauley does in AAA. And depending on what Merrill does over that timeframe, I think you see Merrill in the lead off spot.
So maybe eventually something like this;
1. Merrill, 2. Tatis, 3. Crone, 4. Machado, 5. Bogaerts, 6.Pauley (?), 7. Campusano, 8. Profar, 9. Kim.

Quote from 3fingersplit on April 10, 2024, 4:38 pmSo traditional batting order top to bottom…having done this for almost 35-40 years … I’m curious what you all think and why ?
1) good bat control and able to use the whole field and good speed to be able to take a bag, work the count to run up the pitch total
2) probably the best pure hitter on the team…good power, able to go foul line to foul line, good speed to steal a base and also good bat control and on the occasion when a bunt for a hit, hit and run and a RBI guy , knows the strike zone and can drive up the pitch count…the more you make the opposing pitcher throw the less he can go.
3) Power guy that can go yard from foul line to foul line and a RBI guy and bat in the 1st inning
4) Power guy, RBI guy, decent speed and sits fastball because the very best way to hit a curveball is don’t don’t miss the fastball.
5) good power, ability to drive guys in and use the gaps
6) Line drive hitter that understands the idea of palm to the sky you hit it high and palm straight you hit it great…lots of doubles
7) decent power, knows the strike zone and drive the pitch count up, decent speed and bunting ability.
8) Command of the strike zone, average speed, average power average plate coverage
9) Good speed ( he sets the table for the top of the order, able to go foul line to foul line, average to below average power but can hit the gaps
So with that mentality in making out a line up…who do any of you have batting where ?
I personally think there are plenty of possibilities with or without taking the righty/ lefty into account
Have fun with this people
Go Padres ⚾️ !!!
