2024 Padres Season
Quote from 84padres on July 28, 2024, 5:37 amThe one thing it did was give us hope for better things . Under C Arnholt Smith we were a joke of a team that couldn't pay for good draft picks and had to settle for the Mike Ivies and Jay Franklins .We had the #1 ,#2 #1 picks in 1970 to 1972 and got nothing. And to boot Smith was convicted of embezzlement of $8.9 million and tax fraud, involving his sale of the San Diego Padres.

“For the first time since the birth of the San Diego ball club in 1969, there is no speculation the franchise will fail and be moved elsewhere.” Murphy added, “The team’s new owner already is uniquely popular in this town. People have decided he is a man who can be trusted."
I live in Michigan near Detroit and started rooting for The Padres in 1975 at the age of 13 and I have Ray Kroc to thank for saving the franchise because they would've been pretty dull in DC .

Quote from Randy Manese on July 31, 2024, 10:00 amShildt said in a recent interview that Tatis was taking batting practice but had not been cleared to resume full baseball activities, especially those involving his lower half (running). Shildt and Preller, also, said they expect Tatis back before the end of the season and hoping sooner than later (my add).

I also read at some point that the stress reaction hadn't fully healed, but that doctors were confident enough to allow him to begin throwing, BP, and light jogging. I also read his injury referred to as a "fracture" in the UT the other day, which is a step up from stress reaction, I believe. It might have been a casual miscategorization, but also maybe it was worse the team let on?

Quote from sportwarrior on July 31, 2024, 2:42 pmAny word on when the new guys will be activated? Gotta think Davis will be DFA'd and Gillaspie sent down. I really think Jacob deserves to be in the big league bullpen, but he could be on his way down if they don't create a phantom injury for Kolek.
Also gotta think they're at least tempted to try Lockridge out off the bench. Does Bryce Johnson have any options left? I believe he does, but I'm not sure...

Quote from Jeremy Hill on July 31, 2024, 3:23 pmJohnson is in the lineup today. I would assume that means Lockridge is headed to AAA. I saw that Acee noted that some people in the organization prefer Lockridge to Johnson in his daily newsletter this morning. It might not be long before he gets a shot.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 2, 2024, 5:01 pmCuriously, saw a Padres transaction which indicated they had optioned Lake Bachar to El Paso. Bachar was already on the El Paso roster and I haven't seen where the Padres selected his contract and brought him up to the majors (at least on paper). He is, however, now on the Padres 40 man so I guess they did the Tirso Ornelas thing and rewarded a long-time organizational player with major league status.

From what I saw he triggered an opt out and they put him on the 40 to keep him.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 5, 2024, 8:33 amWatched Musgrove's rehab start in Fresno. Mostly fastballs - got up to 96 but mostly stayed in the 92-93 range but not a lot of movement. Threw a few curveballs. Gave up a few extra base hits but they were down the last base line and nothing hard hit in the gaps - a lot of ground ball early in the start. Didn't seem he was laboring and 35 of 43 pitches (81%) were strikes, which was the objective besides getting in 43-45 pitches.
Would expect at least another rehab start where he would throw more curveballs and other slow stuff besides hitting 50-60 pitches. If he has no adverse reaction to yesterday's start, could see him back on the mound with Padres on the homestand against the Twins or Mets around the middle of August.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 7, 2024, 1:44 amLooking at the top teams in the NL, all are at least 10-12 games above .500 at home. We're 2!
Now, our away record is great! We can beat teams at their place- anybody, anywhere.
If we can just figure out how to be dominant at home(??????), we're the best team in the NL.
