Cosgrove in a rehab start at Lake Elsinore and looked electric.  Ball was dancing all over the plate with incredible multiplane breaks.  If he keeps this up, and stays healthy, could be that key piece in the bullpen from the left side - supporting Morejon and Matsui.

Finally, some good news from the minors for a change!  Thanks Randy.

Who do you guys see getting the start the next time the number 5 spot of the rotation is up?  I’m thinking that it should be Lake Bachar from AAA.  Has been pitching very well.

With everybody on extra rest coming out of the break and the off day on Monday I wouldn't be surprised if they skip the 5th spot once. If they do we wouldn't need a 5th starter until the 28th. AJ might be able to pull off a trade before then. Internally I would the think Brito is probably the leading candidate. He went 5 scoreless and stretched out to 70 pitches in his last start. He might be the best choice out of an uninspiring group.

Oops, forgot about Brito.

Also, I meant to write Gabe Mosser as being the guy in AAA who has been pitching well, not Lake Bachar (I’ve edited my initial comment; sorry for any confusion).

From Acee's daily newsletter this morning.

The Padres do not need a fifth starter until Saturday against Baltimore, and they likely will not use one until then.

After Michael King pitches in today’s series finale against the Guardians, the Padres are off tomorrow. Shildt was not ready to commit to Randy Vasquez starting Tuesday against the Nationals, but that is who is on turn and is expected to pitch.

Matt Waldron and Cease will almost certainly face the Nationals the next two days with King opening the series against the Orioles on Friday.

Jhony Brito, who was sent down to Triple-A to get stretched out and work on a splitter, is being looked at to start Saturday. However, he did not make his scheduled start for El Paso a couple nights ago due to discomfort in his forearm, so his availability will be somewhat dependent on his health.

The other possibilities for that day include a pitcher acquired via trade or a bullpen game. The Padres could also call up Adam Mazur, Gabe Mosser or Nabil Crismatt to start.

Padres Daily: Not Ceasing to amaze; Arraez walks again; rotation equation

Small sample sizes are always a risk but in Vasquez’s last 4 starts:

20 innings … 20 hits … 5 ER (2.25 ERA). Plus runs were 0 in 5 innings / 1 in 4 / 2 in 6 / 2 in 5 … so some consistency.  Maybe he has turned the corner to be a legit #4-5 SP even if he needs to stretch out a bit more to 6 innings.

How awesome will it be to have 4/5 of the rotation at least for one turn because of the Soto trade?

Time to give Preller some real credit for his moves for 2024. Remember he was under direction to lower payroll by about $100MM and actually apparently built a better team in 2024 over 2023.

Adding Cease, King, Arraez as key pieces plus Vasquez, Profar, Higashioka, Solano have been strong moves.

5 games over .500 considering the lost time by Musgrove, Darvish, Bogaerts, Tatis, and more limited play early by Machado is frankly amazing. Not missing Soto, Hader, Snell, Wacha, Lugo, and Martinez … despite their reputations.

Moving on from Melvin and going with Shildt seems also to be a plus move.

————————

Early in the season we were tossing around Shildt’s managerial history in which his teams always performed better in the second half. Most just brushed that aside but beginning to look as though that history has some legs. If so, maybe some of the early season decisions (that we may have agreed not with) were part of a longer term plan for a successful season.

If Tatis and at least one of Musgrove or Darvish return effectively for September … everything could be aligning for a strong playoff run … and with Cease, King, and Waldron maybe a deep playoff run with pitching dominating in the playoffs.

Fenn, regarding Shildt, I have a theory that his responses in the post game pressers earlier this season, while pissing off many fans due to his refusal to criticize his players even after a poorly played game, have brought the team together and have led the players to really want to play for him.  It was the hug Manny gave him after a game about three weeks ago - I think it was after a walk off hit - that first led me to that conclusion.  I know he also took the time to go see some of the players during the offseason, which may have set the tone for the club house.  Your thoughts?

In 1974, Late Padres owner Ray Kroc got on the PA and critized his team. He did not hold back.

During the April 9, 1974, home opener against the Astros, Kroc, who was in just his fourth game as Padres owner and was better known as the founder of McDonald's, apparently couldn't take it anymore during the eighth inning of San Diego's 9-5 loss to Houston.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I suffer with you," Kroc, 72, blared over the PA system — just before a streaker ran on the field and hogged some attention. "Get that streaker off the field. Throw him in jail."

Kroc, undeterred, continued.

"I have good news and bad news," he told the crowd, according to a Sporting News report at the time. "The good news is that the Dodgers drew 31,000 for their opener and we've drawn 39,000 for ours. The bad news is that this is the most stupid baseball playing I've ever seen."

The crowd roared with approval.

Harsh.

I think his support of the players early is a key factor in bring them along for a stronger finish. There does seem to be a strong bond between Shildt and the players.

That might have made him feel good … entertain some fans … just did not do much to make the team play better.
