2024 Padres Season

Darvish dealing with hamstring tightness …

Well Hell…Joe Musgrove is back on the 15 day IL…tricep tightness. Hopefully he can get back and the damage isn’t anything else. When you throw as many breaking balls as Joe throws it’s just a matter of time before it gets worse. He is a stud and will bounce back…Vasquez has been recalled and will make the start today in his place

Just saw the update on MLBTradeRumors and the Padres put BOTH Musgrove and Darvish on the 15 day IL.

Musgrove with a right elbow inflammation

Darvish with a groin strain

BOTH could be a lot longer than 15 days (even adjusted for the backdating).

Vasquez up to start today and Gillespie also called up. Expect another move when Darvish’s turn comes up unless they start Brito or Morejon.

Did someone say never enough pitching?

Make of this as you will … based on player AAV here is what the Padres are currently paying for:

$31.8MM … Machado … currently #132 or of 155 Qualified ML hitters based on WAR

$25.5MM … Bogaerts … IL for quite a long time

$24.3MM … Tatis

$20.0MM … Musgrove … IL (again)

$18.0MM … Darvish … IL (again)

$12.3MM … Hosmer … enough said here

So, the top 6 salaries come to $131.9MM … more than half of the Padres payroll and more than seven other ML teams. Frustrating

I don’t think it’s any surprise about the payroll given the constraints to the payroll this year and who knows how many more after…it sucks that the Hosmer contract won’t be done until after the 2025 season and then that will free up some 12 million dollars.

Gotta stay positive and keep grinding and let the “New” AJ Preller do his thing with the dollars he has available

Based on yesterday’s effort by Vazquez appears he will remain starting in Musgrove’s spot for the foreseeable future.

Darvish’s spot comes up on Tuesday … Mazur would be 5 days from his last start and this may be his window for a call-up. Padres could option Gillaspie again and put either Otto or Marcano on the 60 day IL for the roster space. (Less likely option but also on the right schedule is Lizzaraga down in SA). Really don’t see any other desirable option … Wolf is scheduled today if considering SP on the 40 man)

Since Darvish will miss at least two starts … probably want a SP who will be around for multiple starts and not opt of a “bullpen day” that could mess up the pretty effective pen. Brito I guess would be the option since he is working more long but not loving it.

A note on Mazur,

In SA he had 6 starts … in 5 (28 innings) he yielded on 1 ER total. In the 6th start tagged for 6 runs. Only 1 HR given up in his SA stint.

In EP he has had 4 starts and his top line stats don’t look good BUT looking with more granularity over those 19 innings … he has only given up 21 hits / 4 BB and that is still good. The problem has been giving up 4 HR … but consider that 3 of those HR were in LV and EP (4th in Round Rock) … high altitude ball flys in hitters’ parks. Put those AB in Anaheim and good chance routine fly balls and then in the PETCO marine layer cans of corn.

Seems like the best option to be inserted in for Darvish. Plus over the course of the rest of the season … questions on the health of Musgrove and Darvish and the continued effectiveness of Vazquez. So, getting Mazur some ML experience now will help later in the season or clue the Padres to look for trade help to support the SP.

I came across this memory on Facebook from 9 years ago
Still blows my mind to today:

Now this is crazy!

Baseball has been around for a LONG time....120+ years.
Two nights ago the Padres pitcher,Andrew Cashner, did something that has NEVER happened before. He struck out 10+ hitters and gave up 10+ hits without making it at least 5 innings.
NEVER been done before(He actually struck out 12 and gave up 11 hits in 4 2/3 ip).
So what happens last night?!
The Mets pitcher,Noah Syndergaard....DOES IT AGAIN!
(He struck out 10 and gave up 10 hits in 4 ip)
Same two teams...same Park....two nights in a row!
Never happened in 10's of thousands of games played and then happens twice on back to back nights once for each team.
Incredible!

Marcano (currently on the Padres IL) given a lifetime ban for betting on Pirates games while employed by the Pirates.

PLUS Jay Groome (currently on the EP IL) has been given a 1 year ban for betting.

That should clear two 40 man roster slots … one to cover Mazur and one free for a future move.

What stinks is that all the headlines say , Padres players Marcano and Groome . Neither were Padres at the time of the bets being placed . Marcano was a Pirate and Groome was a Red Sox minor leaguer . Also of the 5 suspended 4 of them placed under $750 while Marcano placed 150 grand and won at a 4% success rate. Most were parlays but how can you only win 4% ? He deserves a lifetime ban just for that .
