2024 Padres Season
Quote from Randy Manese on June 4, 2024, 9:22 amUnfortunately it is a symptom of our society and the addiction to betting typically has dire consequences. For Marcano, career ended at 24 years of age. Ruined his life for monetary greed when he had already accomplished what so many young kids in poverty in Venezuela could only dream of. Sad.

Quote from MrPadre19 on June 4, 2024, 10:29 amPlus if you can't resist at least don't bet on baseball.
Guessing Marcano thought he had insider info and would win big...obviously he didn't.
4%?
wow

Apparently he was into prop bets … if he was doing those bets where have to hit multiple props on the same bet (very very hard to do) 4% may not be all that unusual … the payoffs are high for a win. Depending on how the bets are spread … hitting 1 one of 25 COULD not net him a big loss … but probably did.
Unfortunate.

Quote from 3fingersplit on June 4, 2024, 11:26 amBesides the fact that gambling is an addiction like alcohol, drugs, sex ( I knew gals that were addicted to sex 🤪)…why would anyone risk their career that had a huge monetary upside for maybe making a few dollars short term ?
Boredom, money laundering, debt, the thrill of winning….which he didn’t do often
Groome should have spent more time on figuring out how to pitch and actually stick on a MLB roster instead of wasting his time and money on betting…both these guys are history…Marcano forever and Groome for a year…does Groome get another chance from a team…I gotta believe he is done with the Padres?
All the while Ohtani is cleared…double standard ?

Quote from Randy Manese on June 4, 2024, 1:12 pmThe interpreter/Ohtani story is still incredible to me. In my heart of hearts, I think the interpreter told the true story when first interviewed and before the lawyers all got involved, realizing that this could be very very bad for Ohtani. Anyway, the people involved will take the truth to the grave because just that's the way it is - especially in the Japanese culture.

Quote from fenn68 on June 4, 2024, 2:02 pmSide: one of the other one year suspensions is Michael Kelly (OAK) … back in 2011 he as a high pick by the Padres (48th overall) and lingered in the system for quite a few years (left as a 6 year minor league FA in 2017.
At 31 he was having his best ML season with OAK as a RP.

Quote from fenn68 on June 4, 2024, 4:43 pmPer MLBTradeRumors:
"The Padres are showing strong interest in left-hander Garrett Crochet of the White Sox, per a report from Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The report cautions that no deal is imminent but it also states that the Friars have been the most aggressive club in pursuing Crochet."
Crochet is having a very good start to 2024 ... 13 starts and an ERA around 3.50. He comes with sum pluses and minuses.
The good: just turning 25 ... controlled through 2026 ... currently only making $800K ... all that fits well into the Padres' gameplan.
The cautions: had TJ back in 2020-21? and has been eased back in the ML as a RP in 2022-23 with some poor control and spells on the IL. First year back to starting ... how many innings does he have left for 2024 and is he still an injury risk.
The potential bad: CWS do not need to trade him ... so will hold out for a compelling return. Plus they are on the route to 120 losses and this winter likely will lose 1/3rd if their ML roster to FA or declined team options. So, will not be interested in any short term players and will demand players controlled for 5 years or longer and the key pieces in any trade. Good chance 3 or 4 for 1 type deal. Do the Padres have (and will to deal) players to appease CWS?
Concern: is this effort a sign of real worry about Musgrove / Darvish going forward ... staying healthy? Maybe also a sign that if they are not healthy Vazquez and Mazur are not enough to backfill for the season.
Assuming the Padres are not moving Salas, DeVries, or Lesko ... does Snelling front a package? Would Rosario and/or Pauley work as part of the #2-4 pieces? Maybe a way to move on from Kolek and get some value as the 4th (or 5th piece)?
Given Preller some credit for moving early on Cease then Arraez and now "interested" in Crochet. Playing to win in 2024-25 and not waiting to the deadline to make moves ... prospects are just trade chips.

Gillaspie optioned
Otto to rehab in ACL (lest we forget he is a SP who may provide some late season depth ... had some good run in the minors and in 2022 had 27 starts with TEXAS ... mid 4 ERA).

Guy thought, tell the truth, punishment more lenient. Enter LA Duds lawyers and MLB, story gets flipped upside down immediately!
Total sham.
