2024 Padres Season

PreviousPage 14 of 48Next

I thought Marsee would be a keeper but I guess the bat was too good to pass up but I sure hope that it doesn't turn into a Adam Frazier deal...didn't hit and screwed up the whole team from positions to chemistry and I know everybody knows how I feel about 4 for 1 trades... we needed outfielders so we trade for an infielder that can't play defense, can't run well, can't throw well but can hit singles at or about a .300 clip unless he doesn't then we are stuck with his 10 million plus salary...what could possibly go wrong ?

So the question I have is where does he play or is he strictly the DH because I don't see a field position for him at all ?

For now, likely the DH and only in the field if they want Bogaerts or Cronenworth to “rest” as the DH and then he MIGHT get some 1B/2B time … poor 2B but was passible as a 1B … but a good chance Arraez gets the day off and Wade/Rosario cover an INF slots for defense.

Not going to move Kim if they want to contend in 2024 and they should be in the running at the trade deadline. 2025? That is something to worry about next winter … too many moving parts between now and then.

Padres trade for Arraez … Padres go up 7-0 in the 5th in AZ … Manny and Tatis hitting … already a big payoff from the deal 🙂

As is Cronenworth!

I'm not moving him out of the 3 hole.

Jake has been our most consistent bat so far. He's comfortable where he is.

I guess I'd be alright with just putting Arraez in the leadoff spot( although I HATE slugs in front of FTJ on the basepaths) and moving Profar back to 6, protecting Bogaerts.

How about:

Arraez (L) - Tatis - Cronenworth (L) - Machado - Profar (#) - Bogaerts - Campusano - Merrill (L) - Kim (who is really slumping)? Could flip Campusano and Merrill I guess.

Yeah, that might work.

I guess flopping Profar/Bogaerts and Merrill/ Kim depending on who's on the mound?

Luis Arraez really has no defensive position with the Padres and I'm okay with that - he could be a FT DH and give Bogaerts of Cronenworth a day off on RARE occasions.   Hate to give up prospects but Marsee was having a horrible year and seems to have regressed as a hitter; Martorella had a great start but has been up and down lately; Head is a terrific defensive prospect but there is a lot of swing and miss in his game; finally, while Go has improved in the last couple of weeks, he seems to need more time to adjust to the MLB baseball.  Note that they didn't give up any SP's - these are like gold.  Only so many spots on the position side of the Padres 26 man and it didn't look like any of the guys they traded away was going to displace any of the veterans (or Merrill) soon.  Despite his struggles, Pauley is the the better hitter among Martorella, Marsee and Head.  Go was likely 4th or 5th in line for a RH RP call-up.

I hope this brings some consistency to the Padres line-up.  Arraez-Tatis-Cronenworth-Machado-Profar-Bogaerts-Merrill-Campusano-Kim looks like the new line-up most of the time.  Suggest sending Pauley down to a depleted San Antonio team to get his stroke back - he can play 1b.

We have an elite defensive infield….I sure hope we don’t mess with that.

X is the lone average fielder but Arraez is still a downgrade.

He needs to DH unless an injury.

Report is the deal is now official and the Padres are receiving some “cash considerations” that will alleviate some pressure on the luxury tax threshold.

Assuming they send down Pauley … might it be better to work him in LF than 1B?

Cronenworth is looking strong defensively at 1B and is locked in a long contract while Arraez is around through 2025 is the DH (and at best 1B if needed). Not really interested in moving Bogaerts back to SS given his defensive there. Rosario will be around to fill in 2B/3B from the bench.
